UPDATE -- ARREST ANNOUNCED SAT.

Authorities have announced the arrest of a suspect in the case. Details and a pic are at:

http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5j...278HwD8V9FVN81

The article says it's a "capital murder" charge:

"[Courtney] Lockhart, 23, was charged with three capital counts accusing him of murder along with kidnapping, robbery and attempted rape . . . ."

I hope the right person has been arrested; please remember, though, that individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Lauren's murder was Tuesday at 9pm. Eve's was Wed morn at 5am (remember, we didn't learn of it until Thursday, but that is because it took a full day to ID.)

Therefore, the crimes were only 8ish hours apart, and the girls lived 500 miles from each other. Possible, yes. But difficult.

Also there was a report today that there may be video footage from an ATM machine of Eve's murderer trying to use her cards. Hopefully that will help investigators.

It just sickens me that thugs can just zap life out of women with such potential, and leave so many friends, family and colleagues heartbroken.

These are two unrelated cases.

I just don't know how I'm going to let my 18 year old head off to college. :(

Amen and well said.

I am thrilled the authorities have made such progress on these cases.

Sadly, this can happen in your own hometown just as easily in a college city or town. Auburn isn't exactly New York or LA.

That's what I said when I saw it on the news last night - I sure hope he's the guy so justice can be served.

I feel ill - according to the Facebook group for Eve Carson, the f$%J$#% pieces of lowlife filth that are the Westboro Baptist Church have hailed Lauren and Eve's deaths as another sign of proof that God hates America, and are duly planning on picketing Eve's funeral. They repulsed me before, but now I think I feel physically ill just thinking about anyone taking glee in the loss of these two beautiful and talented young women.

Some people are easily brainwashed by these charismatic shrews. Unfortunately, places like this live under the guise as a streamline church. I'm always uneasy with fundamentalists. I think they are kooks

I know there is a motorcycle group which works to keep WBC from disrupting veteran's funerals - I wonder if Greeks could unite to do something similiar. I personally would be sorely tempted to "lose control" of my car whilst driving past them -so it's a good thing I'm nowhere near them.

Listen up everyone!

I'm a student at Northern Illinois University and I spent the majority of last month helping out with the counter-protests happening here on campus. I have some valuable information for you so spread this around. My college was SUCCESSFUL at keeping these people away from our memorials and funerals.

1) Most WBC members are lawyers. They are unemployed because they make enough money through LAWSUITS against those who hit them, slander them, dump water on them, and throw things at them at protests. DO NOT FUND THEIR NEXT TRIP by doing any of these things!

2) At a funeral, the mourning family does NOT want to see a poster-board debate outside the building. Even though we ALL know the WBC is hateful and cruel, this doesn't meet the Burk family wants to see your posters either. Here is what NIU did: sheets and tarps. Attach sheets and tarps to tall poles and BLOCK the WBC from sight - let the family mourn. This was wildly successful at several NIU funerals, so much so that the WBC packed up and LEFT. Someone from your school needs to head up this project to arrange rides, tarp-building activities, etc. YOU CAN DO IT!

3) If you must make signs, do not make them a counterargument. Our favorite sign read "God Loves Ryanne Mace." In this way, you are showing support for the family rather than flashing a witty slogan to the WBC - who, by the way, don't care what anyone has to say.

4) While holding tarps and sheets, WEAR YOUR iPOD, and turn up the volume. You'll be hearing lots of hatred and screaming from these people. Don't be tempted to react! Just stand there, listen to some music, and block them out entirely. You will drive them absolutely wild by doing this.

5) The Patriot Guard is unable to assist at the funerals/memorials of victims like the NIU students or even Lauren. As their mission statement says, their organization exists to support the families of fallen military members. Though this often involves drowning out the WBC, this does not mean it is their mission.

6) WBC usually requests a police escort. On the night of our memorial, the WBC did not request a police escort. This was an indicator to us that they were not coming. Lo and behold - they never showed.

All in all, WBC threated NIU with protests at all five funerals and several memorials on campus. They attended two funerals and were blocked by our tarps. They did not attempt to protest at any other funerals, nor did they make an appearance at our large memorial on the 24th.

If you band together, you will see similar success! Good luck to you!

I LOVE this!!!!!!

From what I hear, the dean said they will move the memorial to a stadium venue in which they can control the access. He said he can't control the public property but he can certainly control the buildings on his campus. Glad to hear that.
And, regardless of what the "civil liberties" people have to say, I personally, AM GLAD they have surveillance cameras around that the authorities can use to solve crimes!

My friend is in a fraternity at Auburn and he mentioned tonight on the phone that he's heard Westboro Baptist Church was supposed to be picketing the funeral. It's sickening that people are so twisted that they would ruin a poor mourning family to get their own disgusting message across. I really hope Army Wife is right in that Auburn has a plan to prevent this.

Titchou 03-11-2008 08:24 AM

The WBC evidently didn't get the location change. A few were on the Samford Lawn as we were headed to the coliseum. I was told later that some students went over and talked with them to keep them there during the service.
