In our first years, we established the above chapters plus:
Sigma Phi Epsilon, Brenau
Kappa Phi, Mt Union

These were both released to Tri-Delta in 1914. (Kappa Phi chapter was recolonized in around 2001 and closed in 2004.)

What about Gamma Beta Sigma, St. Mary's? Do you know anything about them? Were they an official chapter?

TECHNICALLY, those are our "single letter chapters." However, the question NBH was really asking was how many of our oldest chapters are still active, since the oldest chapters in a GLO are usually only designated with one letter.

Sorry, the cold medicine must be getting to me! :)

The first time I saw that Chapter Designation on our roster it kinda took me aback. I was thinking, "Did an entire chapter of SPhiE get sex changes and we let them keep their fraternity name as a Chapter Desgination?". Yes, I realize that all happened way before sex changes, etc - but it was a random off the wall thought.:D

Unfortunately, I don't have time to research this for Delt, but I do know that my chapter, which is Beta, is still active and is the oldest continuously active in the Fraternity, having been founded in 1862.

DeltAlum, I realize that you didn't post this, but thought you might know. Did your fraternity used to reuse letters? I ask this because I know that Iowa State's Delt Chapter was originally Omega before the ban on Greek Life (1890s). When Greek Life was reinstated (1904) and Delt returned (believe they'd gone underground), they became the Gamma Pi chapter.

Leslie Anne 12-18-2007 03:13 AM

Your post got me thinking so I checked in an earlier edition of Baird's and there it was....Omega at Iowa. Then I found a whole lot of discrepancies so I edited my post.

Sorry, Delts! :o

Haha no, I think you're right. A lot of Beta chapters don't exist anymore. I think Kappa's Beta chapter was at a school that closed. Hmm...

I'm working on making my list better-updated, but I believe Phi Sigma Kappa has 12 active, 11 inactive, and 1 seceded (Tau chapter at Dartmouth didn't think we were adjusting to the Civil Rights movement quickly enough and is a still-operational co-ed fraternity called "Phi Tau").

Our Alpha is still rockin away at UMass.

That is so awesome. I would love to be a member of a single letter organization. So cool!!!
