No GLO is going to care - even if it's an NPHC, I've seen white girls in those orgs. They may "historically" be whatever, but it's all about your beliefs and what's in your heart and if those beliefs match those of the organization you want to join.

She made fun of herself all the time and it was never an issue that she was "different." She was an awesome collegiate member and now she's a leader in her alum chapter. Of course we all knew she came from different origins than most of us, but it was never an issue...ever. I am proud of my diverse chapter! I think even an all white group would accept you. I'd say the only thing you need to worry about is your Junior standing - but again that depends on the school...

I don't know but referring to her as the "Asian Sensation" and she feeling the need to make fun of herself says to me that her race was an issue.

Well, I was wondering maybe because given the fact that there aren't that many asian sororities comparing to those historically white or african american sororities. I mean, even the biggest one, aKDPhi, only has roughly less than 50 chapters. So not every single campus can accommodate the OP's needs I guess.

I have a few friends, they are asians, and yet they joined NPCs. Some of them are even the only asian in their sorority. All it matters is your mindset. If you are afraid that being asian will affect your chances, with that mindset, you may end up being "rejected" because you don't feel comfortable about yourself to open up.

It could also be that this young woman is interested in joining a GLO with a "long history," which most Asian ((inter)national) GLOs do not have, unlike D9 groups.

Asian Americans stopped being an ostracized and excluded racial and ethnic minority group years ago.

I think this is a VERY broad generalization.

It has always been the case that minority groups have turned their stereotypes upside down and found pride in their group membership. Like the "black pride" movement.

In a smaller context, even whites in the NPHC have used (or allowed others to use) their race as something that makes them "cool" or "different" within that specific setting.

so she IS a sensation because she's asian.

i need to get on that gravy train.

And these jokes can be interpreted by outsiders as you making your "asian-tivity" material for laughter. You and I are friends and we feel comfortable with each other. But this arguably isn't much different from "asian sensation."

;)
