LIGHT RAIL...
I think it's a bad idea! I don't think many people will use it ya know? Plus it will be sooo long before it is all done. I heard only the first stage of the light rail would be done in 7 years, which is ridiculous. Plus, the roads would be sooo torn up and there would be a $h*t load of construction going on for many, many years. I personally, don't have a problem with the traffic too much, just avoid the 5 o'clock traffic and it's cool although if you know the back ways, you are at an advantage! I've seen worse traffic than austin rush hours traffic... (in houston)! More Light rail opinions.. sPit iT OuT girlies/guys!

I don't live in Texas....but let me tell you CutiePie 2000....I am moving there as soon as possible!! I have friends you moved there after graduation (for jobs) and I visited them last year for only one week http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif On the way to the airport we were trying to think of ways to keep me there...like calling my boss back here in NOva Scotia and telling him the airport was permemntly closed because of tornadoes, or something. But alas, I had to get back on that plane and I cried all the way from Dallas to Newark and then back to Halifax! It is SOOOO amazing there! I hope you find it to be all this too! I just decided to check out this forum...and how did I know that Sarah would post here?! LOL!

I'm the person she came to visit in Dallas! I know how much she loved it there (so did I...I lived there for 10 months! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif)

Anyway, my opinion of Dallas for ya Cutiepie2000.....LOVE it! Being Canadian is a great thing there. My boyfriend and I lived there with 3 other guys from university (Art's brother and 2 friends from Dal) and we kept getting more guys they knew from Dal moving to Dallas! Just be warned, if you get a job there and they find out you're from Canada you'll probably here "eh" and "aboot" said to you a lot...in mocking of us Canadians!!!!

Dallas is all about the money! All the guys there that we knew made tons of it....there is a HUGE tech section (actually Art found out that Dallas is second to the Silicon Valley for development in the comp fields!) The people there are really nice (more nice once they found out we were Canadian! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif) and the city is great for things to do!

Where are you from in Canada? I know that Art and I moved to Dallas from Toronto (where he was working at the time) and we did miss Toronto a lot, but found it to be similar to Dallas in regards to things to do there! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

i have a lot of family in dallas that i visit often and there is a light rail there. as a matter of fact, i have a relative that is an electrical engineer who did the designing for 3 (2 that are built and one in the construction phase) of the light rail stations. trust me when i say, the light rails are a wonderful thing!! like i said, i visit often (those are my favorite relatives), so if you know anything about dallas, you know how wonderful it is to get from the west end to park avenue in 15 minutes!! it doesn't really hinder traffic during construction (for i saw the fruits of my kinfolx labor as it was ripening), it creates a lot of jobs, and, once it's built, you'll think "why didn't we get one sooner?"

don't want to be fussy, but, there is no way in h-e-double hockey sticks (tribute to you canadians http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif )that houston people are nicer than dallas people. that just aint so!!! people in dallas, as someone else said, SPEAK to everyone!! now, i had a friend go to school in houston. she told me that while she was there for her freshman orientation, she went to a restaurant, where a total and complete stranger said to her, "i have that shirt...i just haven't washed it as much as you obviously have." HOW IS THAT FOR RUDE???!!!!

and as for the local flair in houston as opposed to dallas, please, tell me where it is so the next time i go (i have a lot of family in houston as well), i'll know where it is. now, dallas has deep ellum, the west end, the clubs on park ave., the real cool bars in downtown (people hang around in downtown dallas for more reasons than just going to work), and not to mention the light rail that gets you around. of all the cities i've visited in texas (and it has been a lot...i got family all over this state), heck, the country, dallas gets my vote. and as soon as i can, i'm moving to big-d!!!

Maybe when all of us who DO want to move to Dallas move, we should just get one big house and it could be a multi-greek-cultural house! Every greek organization allowed to live there in harmony!!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

I lived in Texas last year, and it was absolutely incredible. As a fellow Canadian, I could give you my "northern" perspective. I lived in San Antonio, and had a great time. I did visit Austin, Dallas and Houston, and liked them in that order. Austin is a fantastic city, its on the smaller side (which is actually good, us Canadians are not always familiar with huge American megacities), but has a great nightlife and really friendly people. Dallas is really great too, but its sooooooo big. And I know I'm going to upset some people on this thread for saying this, but I didn't get the best impression of Houston. I found it to be very racially divided, I thought it had a lot of snobs, the whole city seemed consumed by money and buisness, and that's just not my scene. Oh, and another thing, was driving around Houston, i couldn't help but wonder if it would kill them to plant a tree in the city, there's no greenery whatsoever, which would definately take some getting used to for a Canadian. BUT, on the upside, I've heard there's lots of career opps in Houston.

Oh, and Texas gets HOT in the summer. I know that Texans have posted that as well, but as a Canadian, I don't think I had any concept of heat until I moved to Texas, it can get to be 35-40 degress Celcius in the summer. Oh, and a funny thing that happened was that my final exams in December were postponed, because, get this, the temperature dipped down to zero degrees and people were afraid to drive in the cold . . . .:eek:

And, of course, I must say something about the men in Texas. Texans are always so charming and such gentlemen. Very, very cute, lots of variety, and always very, very polite. Sounds very corny, but they know how to raise their boys to become gentlemen in the South. They need to work on this in Vancouver . . .:(

Hi CP2000 ...

I spent 10 days in Texas in February 2000 visiting 2 AGD chapters there in Dallas & Corpus Christi ... it was definitely a lot different than Vancouver, but it was also LOTS of fun!! :)

BTW - what type of visa / work are you thinking about getting into down there?? the reason I ask is that I worked in NYC for 3 months in 2000 & had a HECK of a time securing a visa. Unless you are a nurse, doctor, teacher or technology guru - working visas are VERY hard to get for us Canadians ... take it from someone whose friend got turned away at the border & had to give up a VERY lucrative job in Dallas because of visa complications.

Please do be sure to keep us posted ... I too am looking to move down south, though my focus is more on the midwest or deep south at this point.

I've lived in Dallas for almost a year now, so here are my thoughts for anybody wanting to move.

First don't try to move during the summer if you can help it. It gets really, really hot here during the summer

Next get your hands on the Apartment Guide to check out appartments. I suggest the North Dallas area. It's a little bit pricy, but there are plently of things to do. Along those lines try a get something in Denton county. You get cheap car insurance rate in this county

A car is a must. Thr public transportation system is awesome,but some of the bus stops don't have coverings. Really not fun waiting for the bus in 100 degree heat

The highway system is no joke. I-635 is no joke and is forever under construction:rolleyes:

All I know about Texas is - not to mess with it :D

The best thing about Texas is just to the east of it. :p
