I think it'll depend on the reason she gave (if any) and any relationships she has maintained with the girls over the year.

Please ignore my user name--it started out as a joke, and now it's just..well, lame.

Anyway, I'm so sorry that I didn't see this thread yesterday.

Re: Flowers

When my daughter rushed, I called around to various gift/flower shops in Tuscaloosa. They were armed & ready, knew exactly what to do. It was a relief to let someone 'in the know' handle it. I am a klutz about this sort of thing, and I didn't want to embarrass my daughter or overstep my bounds...

May be too late for this advice, but perhaps that's something you could do.

Re: BeeBadger's question:

Hope it works out for your daughter. I know it can be agonizing when you're on the sidelines. My daughter's roommate dropped out of rush beginning of frosh year, and didn't try again. She has since expressed some regret that she didn't, but still has maintained friendship with many of the girls that she met during rush.

Anyway-- good luck to your daughter!

Helicopter1,
I sent you a PM.

Today is Bid Night for my daughter (unless she hears from her Rho Gamma before then! Yikes). I thought the flower idea sounded great. Is there a difference between Bid Night and Pledge Night? Do they still do a special pledging ceremony or is that up to the school/chapter?

Helicopter1 09-19-2007 02:22 PM

Hi, beebadger,

Maybe send some either way?

Also, I checked with the local florists first, so as not to embarrass my kid...

The locals usually have the 411 on what's considered appropriate--in my experience, that is.

I sent flowers to my daughter when she received her bid. I think that the ceremonies are private, but I guess it depends on the organization.

I know one thing for sure: there is a ton of collective knowledge and experience on this site. Use the search function, and read some of previous threads--you might get more specific answers. Sorry if I'm being too vague!

It depends on the school. Some schools have their pledging ceremonies immediately following bid day, and others wait a few days. It also varies by chapters ON that campus. Campuses like the SEC seem to tend to have the pledging ceremonies on Bid Day, because they don't do a lot of COBs...whoever shows up on Bid Day is their pledge class. Campuses that have a lot of next day/week COBing going on will sometimes wait until they COB up to total/quota to do their pledging ceremony so they don't have to repeat it multiple times.

Thanks for the info. Ok. I know I'm going to sound really stupid, but I can't figure out how to access past posts for a topic. Someone wrote that you can find info on practically anything, but I don't know how. I tried "search" and FAQ and neither give me anything. Where ARE these old topics listed??

nittanyalum 09-20-2007 11:56 AM

Whoa whoa whoa, but first, did your daughter get her bid??????

beebadger 09-20-2007 12:14 PM

Oops --sorry. Yes, she's s new Gamma Phi! Her cell phone died so she was worried about going to Bid Night and finding out that they HAD called. But she did get her first choice and is very excited. Thanks for all the advice.

beebadger 09-20-2007 12:16 PM

Oh, and it was the same sorority that she was offered a COB bid from last year, which she declined. I guess they didn't hold it against her. Whew.

FSUZeta 09-20-2007 12:33 PM

hooray for your daughter!! do send flowers if you can-it really impresses everyone!;)

nittanyalum 09-20-2007 12:36 PM

Congratulations to her and her new chapter and to you too! Your daughter is now also your sister! :)

Helicopter1 09-20-2007 03:45 PM

Oh, yay!! I just got back on from yesterday...

Congratulations to your daughter and Gamma Phi...Yipppeeeee!!!!!!!

fyrnymph 09-20-2007 05:07 PM

Congratulations to the newest Gammie!

WarEagle07 09-20-2007 05:20 PM

Wow, congratulations! I sent flowers to my daughter and I didn't even have to find out what the official flower was. The local florist had done this so many times that they already knew what to do! Also, one of the active sorority members told me not to buy her any sorority merchandise right away because with bid day gifts, buddy gifts, and big sister gifts she would already be getting plenty of sorority merchandise. I must say, she was right!
