Good luck! Vandy has some great chapters.

Stef the Pef 12-23-2006 03:21 AM

Good luck!

re: recs--it sounds like Baylor's rush is a lot like Vandy's, and the chapter that wanted me in the end didn't have a rec for me after rush week. I'm pretty sure KD's national policy requires recs, so I ended up having the reference chair approach me after rush to get the info to have someone else write it for me. Sometimes Panhellenic's policy actually works, so I don't think you're going in too bad off. Again, good luck! When does formal rush start?

NO. The alumnae aren't just sitting around rush waiting for stuff to do - they are grown women who have lives. The role of alums in rush varies by sorority, but I can't think of any who do this.

Sorry, you are incorrect with this assumption. YES, there are some alumnae who actually sit around, waiting for the phone calls from chapters with rec requests for PNMs. "Hi Mrs. Jones, this is Sally from --- chapter. I met a great girl during recruitment today, and she needs a rec. Will you write one for her? Here is the information..." And within a couple of hours, the rec is emailed or faxed over.

KD no longer "requires" recommendations, but the chapters have to make every effort to obtain one.

I meant that they didn't have an alum sitting around the actual rush parties or in the sorority house, doing nothing but waiting to meet girls and give out recs, which is what the OP implied.

Don't count on the chapters getting the recs for you. Now that you know how to go about it, do the leg work and get them yourself. Call it showing initiative and that you want to be there.

What she said! Hope it all works out well for you!

Hey Almost64! I rushed back in August, it's a great way to meet people and find true friends that become your sisters. My best friend from high school is going through formal recruitment right now, so I know how stressed you may be getting. Just follow the advice you read on here, be yourself, and go to the house where you can call the girls your sisters and it will work out. Good luck!!

Good luck today!

FuzzieAlum 01-09-2007 04:53 PM

We were driving around campus today looking for a parking spot at the bookstore because it had spontaneously gotten nastily cold and rainy around lunchtime. At all the houses, the rushees were lined up outside waiting for their next parties, many without umbrellas. Poor things! :( I hope rush is going well for you and you are keeping dry!

Good luck, Almost64!

Consideration shouldn't be based on academic record alone. Academic records/standardized test scores are just one part of the individual.

One could make that same claim about acceptance to a university. Schools like Vanderbilt look at extracurriculars, personal and academic references, personal essays, etc.

How did it go, Almost64? I read elsewhere that today is bid day. Did everything work out like you had hoped?

Good luck!

NUBlue&Blue 01-14-2007 05:57 PM

Hope things went the way you were hoping, Almost64.

My daughter has three friends at Vandy...two are TriDelts and one is an Alpha Chi.

Another bit regarding recs--when three girls from my daughter's HS class ended up preffing ZTA at UGA, the woman who wrote my daughter's ZTA rec called and asked me about them so she could supply recs before pref in case any of them were offered/took a bid. She was the alum "assigned" to our HS. (One of the three ended up a Zeta.)

that seems a little backwards. an active sister can ask an alum to write a rec for a PNM so when it comes to selection time (at the end of each round), chapter members can say, "well, this PNM does have a rec..."

actually, it seems like a recommendation once removed. as in, that active sister cannot write the rec because she's rushing for her chapter, so she gets an alum to do it. and it also seems like a loophole in pushing for one PNM over another.

in any case, i feel like inthe case where this happens, the rec would hold less weight because of its spur-of-the-moment nature, and moreso, because the PNM doesnt know anything about it.

ETA: in reading these recruitment stories as an NPHC member, im just trying to understand how NPC works, so please let's not make this an NPC vs. NPHC debate. that'stotally not my intention.

Not really though - any PNM could have an active member ask for a rec for her. For example, my alumnae chapter was recently asked about girls from the area who were going through rush at a school - note that I said "girls" and not a girl - they asked about every girl who was going through.

NEWS: Freshmen receive bids to Panhellenic sororities

Retention rate lower than in years past

Vanderbilt's 10 Panhellenic sororities offered invitations to 434 women Sunday at the annual Bid Day event in the Student Recreation Center. ...

Rest here: http://www.insidevandy.com/drupal/node/2411

(It was so cute today - all the new members are wearing their bid day shirts and I can't tell you how many conversations I overheard about buying white dresses.)
