Some people get so caught up in protecting one person's rights that they forget that the rest of us have rights, too. I have the right to go study in the library late at night, secure in the knowledge that only other students with valid IDs can be in there with me. The bottom line is that he didn't have the right to be there without his ID, and he necessitated the involvement of the police by refusing to leave. I'm a big fan of people getting what they deserve, and I can't say I object to this. |

"The CSOs left, returning minutes later, and police officers arrived to escort the student out. By this time the student had begun to walk toward the door with his backpack when an officer approached him and grabbed his arm, at which point the student told the officer to let him go. A second officer then approached the student as well. " "Video shot from a student's camera phone captured the student yelling, "Here's your Patriot Act, here's your fucking abuse of power," while he struggled with the officers" quality too good, huh? yea, i'm sure that the guy videotaping it from a camera phone sure was thinking "lemme get this so i can get back at the cops." uhhhh......... |

About the other clip, the guy sure talks about leaving, but from what I could make out from that clip (which was not terribly useful) he doesn't leave. Why don't the cops carry tranquilizer guns like on Metal Gear? Then people would stop screaming like the police had just eaten a baby. Or not. |

LOL, and shake them down for dog tags? |
Before tasers, the cops would have incapacitated him with night sticks.
Watching the video, I see no unnecessary force. The kid didn't follow the rules, he refused to obey repeated lawful orders from police officers, they used non-deadly force to persuade him. The kid has to be the biggest douche I've ever seen. Here's your Patriot Act! What a winner. |

So he's a douche bag because:
He said he was leaving Or He brought up the Patriot Act ??? |

I'm not sure what the patriot act has to do with police officers removing a trespassor from private property. Maybe you could fill me in on that one? |

The most important thing I learned is that you never know who has a gun. There are serial murderers who have given up without a fight, and there are cases where an officer was shot and killed or injured for life on a simple traffic stop. I also remember being a student at Texas and a large portion of the student population walking around with a chip on their shoulder for anyone in authority for no good reason whatsoever. I shudder to think how big that group is at our fine instititutions in Kalifornia. Last week a 92 year old woman shot 3 police officers. Do you want the police to assume this student is unarmed and let him have control of this situation? Do you want to support his wife and kids when he gets shot dead because you think the police are too brutal and do not make accomodations for certain people because they are "little college students" or sweet little old ladies? You all saw the video, but what is there to this situation- specifically and in the big picture- that was not so readily visible. As for the "Patriot Act" comment- that sickens me. That is a tricky piece of legislation, no doubt, but invoking it to validate one's own bad behavior strikes me as incredibly immature and stupid. Maybe this incident will beat some sense into the kid- but I won't hold my breath. |
