Here is my issue with the usage of the word frat instead of fraternity. It relates to the amount of respect a certain chapter is being afforded. Some chapters do not want to be associated with the frat mentality, thus the backlash upon usage of the word. In instances such as frat house, or frat party, the frat is an unnecessary adjective being use. Simply say house or party, if you need to be more specific "I'm going to the Beta house" or "I'm going to the SigChi party."

Of course you can.:) Phi Mu Alpha = Power, Music, Authority.

(Ok, so Phi = F, but I couldn't think of anything good with "F")

That's as bad as Phi Nu Mu ;)

And MysticCat you can have mostly absolute power, I'd like to horde a little for myself... maybe a line-item veto sort of thing.

That and atleast for NIC fraternities, I can't speak nor would I want to try to speak for NPHC orgs since I don't belong to one, the word frat has a negative conotation. "Look at those frat boys", "I can't stand that frat brother in our calc class." It's seen as demeaning to alot of use because it is used, in most cases not all, to draw references to the "Animal House" mentallity that alot of use have tried so hard to get away from being associated with. When GDI's, faculty, and just general people use the word frat they assume that all we do is get drunk, take advantage of women, and waste our parents money to graduate with a Comm Degree we'll never use.

It makes her SWoMBO -- She Who Must Be Obeyed.

Foiled again. Oh well.

It cracks me up that people are still answering this thread all seriously - like the same argument hasn't been had 6,857 times.:p ;)

Oh wait, sorry, I'm not supposed to hijack the all important "Frat" discussion. Carry on.:p

I was just makiong a point that there are more people out there who feel this way. So, in your mind set you'd say that in an election what's the point of more than 3 or 4 people voting, becasue, hey, the argument and opinion has been made a hundred, a thousand, or maybe even a million times, reference the 2000 Presidential Election. So, on the next election day just sit at home or in the office and don't bother voting, making your opinion and argument heard, don't worry because a hundred, a thousand or even a million others will make it known and heard for you, what does one more vioce count right? What does it matter if some of the population of Florida was disenfranchiced, there were others out there making the same statement as they did, right? All that matters is that it was put out there, not that there are many other people who feel this way and want to make it known? The importance of making our opinions and arguements known is so that people know it is not one held by a person or two but to see how many out there hold this ideal. Just because it's been stated once or a million times does not mean it shouldn't be stated again.

I equate the use of the word frat to the way in which the Phi Mu Alpha brothers on this campus hate being called Phi Mu's and I'm sure the Phi Mu sisters on GC would feel the same way if they ever heard someone say it. I'm sure if any post I make replying to MysticCat if I called him a Phi Mu brother he would become quite upset.

No, it's not that I don't vote because I think everyone else will do the right thing for me. I don't vote because I don't feel like I should have to choose between the lesser of two evils. And yes, I can still complain about it.
