The movie in my opinion was blah. Everytime I saw Eddie Murphy perform, I could not take him seriously. He kept reminding me of all his characters in "Coming to America". I was laughing haaard! Jennifer Hudson did a wonderful job. Fabulous! Beyonce has surely come a long way, but her performance lacked personality. Her wardrobe was on point along with her makeup. Jamie Fox was wonderful, I really like him. Noni Rose, she was cute. I like her and I will continue to look out for her in upcoming films. What was Effie's brother name in the movie? He was a cutie and if that was really him singing he did a great job. I'll continue to support him as well.
I felt the storyline was rushed and I lost focus really quick because of it. If possible, I will get the dvd of the original movie.

Whatever happened to the remake of "Sparkle"? Now that was a movie!

I was thinking the same thing. He also reminded me of his Klump characters.

My mom and I saw the movie yesterday. It was good but not great.

Eddie - Ditto about the Sexual Chocolate comments! BTW, who was his character supposed to 'be' in real life? I couldn't place him.

Jamie - He plays a snake a little toooo well

Beyonce - She looked good but thats it. Her characted lacked depth. Also, I didn't like that she came off playing the victim and a goody too shoes. I didn't see the play so I am not sure if Sheryl's portrayal came off like that

Jennifer - Girl can sang! She played the heck out of that character. I was kinda mad that she lookes a hot mess in the closing scene.

I will be getting the soundtrack to this!

Keith Robinson (you might remember him from Half & Half, he was little Dee Dee's boyfriend Neil or from Fat Albert). Anyway, I loved him too, I've been a big fan since seeing him on H&H. It was quite a surprise - but a good one - to see him in the movie holding his own singing with the others.

I agree the storyline did seem a bit rushed. Especially the ending, I wish we could've found out what happened when Curtis realized Magic was his child.

Oh. my. gawd! YES!

I wish I could rewind back to 1982 when I could have seen this on Broadway. If Jennifer Holiday was anything (probably better or more intense) than Jennifer Hudson's performance, I would need a whole box of Kleenex.

I know this isn't the same thing as seeing it live and in person, but here's Jennifer Holiday's rendition at the 1982 Tony Awards.

I knew Ci Ci looked familiar. I just couldn't figure out where I knew him from.

Just came from seeing it! FABBBBBBBBULOUS!!!!!!!!!! OMG I just loved it.

Eddie Murphy's character was said to be a hodgepodge of Marvin Gaye (hat scene, the Patience song) and 2 other male singers but the names escape me.

Jennifer Hudson is about to BLOW UP!!!!!!!!!!!:D

WOW! What a performance, I wish I could've seen the original on Broadway.

agreeing with everything above.

saw it last nite. JHud was amazing, Beyonce was dead. and our theatre was a hot mess, hooting and hollering like it was church Sunday, and then when Beyonce did "Listen," she got the pity applause. me and my friends were seriously on some "black folx in the movie theatre" mess, screaming, "dont clap for that!" i dont even like that song, so she definitely wasnt getting props from me!

and yes, i could not take eddie seriously either, we kept singing "party all the time" everytime he came on the screen. jamie did a decent job in his role, especially when he got real Ike on Beyonce's character.

i felt a couple of parallels. that one scene, where he's telling her how her voice has no character and how no one knows her in her voice... man i was like, beyonce you gon have to step your game UP cause JHud is about to get it ON! also, the same way B's character was used to sell the group in the movie is the same way she was used to sell the movie. at the end of the movie, ANYONE couldve played her role.

lastly, i thought the baby story was extraneous and the ending a little too clean, like it all wrapped up nicely. it kinda fell flat and it didnt matter how it ended.

Just finished seeing it. WONDERFUL MOVIE!!!!

B--She was pretty good, but I agree with everyone that her role was less that it was made out to be. I liked when she sang Listen

Jennifer: OMG. That girl tore them songs up, down, around and sideways. :p Besides AIATY, I really liked I Am Changing and One Night Only.

Eddie: ROTFLMAO!!!! Especially with the Miami club scene and the anniversary show. At one point I thought he was going to sing Hot Tub. :p And one more thing: SEXUAL CHOCOLATE!!!! :p

For some reason when I saw Curtis, I kept seeing Jamie with a bad wig.
And Effie's brother was hot!!!! :D

This will be a part of the DVD collection when it comes out. :D

I absolutely LOVED this movie. Jennifer Hudson was a amazing. Her voice gives me chills. She truly upstage Beyonce. However, Beyonce to' up that last song when she was singing in the booth. Overall the movie was great but the people in the movie theater made it even better. Folks screamed and shouted when Jennifer Hudson saaanged! :D :D

Definitely getting the soundtrack and the movie when it comes out on DVD!

I didn't know that Loretta Devine was in the original. She made an appearance in the movie as well. Cool :)

Before seeing that Youtube clip, I didn't know that either. Sheryl Lee Ralph was the original Deena, Loretta was Lorelle, and Jennifer Holliday was Effie. I wonder why the producers didn't include Sheryl and Jennifer, even in some small way.

Jennifer Hudson's voice gave me goose bumps. I think that Beyonce's solo song was supposed to have the same effect, but it fell short.

Me too!!! I agree, and ditto to everything else! Well, just about everything... :)
I loved it!
*singing*
"...round, and around!"
"Jimmy got soul! Jimmy got soul! Jimmy got S-O-U-L, SOOUUULLL!!!" :D
"Lisssteeennnn..."

Does anybody know why they didn't use Jennifer Holiday's song "Givin' Up", from the original soundtrack also sung by Donnie Hathaway? That song is FIERCE! Maybe on the same level as "And I am Telling You."

One more thing...wasn't it interesting to see the comparison of Dreamgirls with Destiny's Child? And LeToya (Effie) making a come back? ;)
