Wow, you read so well.;) I guess you missed the part where you can take birth control properly, and take advantage of technology (the morning after pill) when a "oops" happens.

But...if you're so paranoid about getting pregnant, then I guess your way is the only (ethical/moral/correct) way to go.

Abortion is used for reasons beyond sexual carelessness and promiscuity. It is a pro-choice means of responding to life's complexities. Proper condom use, morning after pills, and taking the pill properly are the first steps for responsible adults. Life doesn't operate so formulaic and additional options should always be available just in case.

Having an abortion IS facing the consequence of having sex. It is generally acknowledged that abortion is not birth control and it is not something that most women find easy and carefree to do. It can take a huge physical and emotional toll on women, regardless of why they choose to have an abortion. People act as if drones of women are just thrilled that they can get an abortion and are doing away with all precautions so they can have a fetus cut out of them one day.

It is almost 2006 and women have various places to go for birth control if they do not want to get on the pill. Some women's bodies respond poorly to any type of birth control so are you telling these women to forego sex altogether? What if these women are married and just do not want children? Again, these are the complexities of life that make such social issues neither black nor white. There is a large gray area and the government should not be allowed to dictate this gray area for millions of women (and men...and families). We should have certain regulations in place but abortion should not be outlawed completely based on some people's ideas of morality versus irresponsibility and stupidity.

Okay, I get the point. I should have save the first part for the end of my comment. Though I DO really feel that if you are so hell-bent on NOT getting pregnant, that you should not participate in the activity that would cause it. I dont want to get pregnant, not right now, not for a while. But, I am prepared to take responsibility if it happens.

Birth Control is a method for people to be responsible and have a little 'fun' at the same time. People who go around screwing without any protection and then get an abortion are pathetic. Teenagers, and stupidity...thats what parents are for. To teach your children to not be stupid. Honeslty, I dont know how my parents did it. I was 19 the first time I had sex. I saw my friends getting pregnant at 15 years old and then going through the trauma of "he doesnt love me" and I thought to myself "Hell, naw. That aint for me, I'll wait till I'm older to deal with that mess." If a teenager gets pregnant, mommy and daddy should not "bail her out" to give her another chance at having her own life. They should TEACH her before she does something stupid and has to face the consequences for it.

Yes, I'm agaisnt abortion. Even in cases of rape (theres that great technology called the morning after pill again). The only time I think it's justified is when the mother is going to physically die from it, or the child will be stillborn. I had to include that "physically" in there, because a girl once gave me the argument about how she would have "died" if she had had her baby, because she would have had to drop out of school, and get 2 jobs, and blah blah blah...so, just covering all the bases.

That's wrong though. The morning after pill prevents the egg from being fertilized. If the egg is already fertilzed, the MAP is useless and the egg will be implanted and will begin to grow.

The part of the quote "inhibits implantation by altering the endometrium" might mean what you said - but I've never heard it explained like that. It was my understanding that the reason you have up to 72 hours to use the MAP was because it took at least that long to fertilize anyway. After 72 hours, if it works, consider yourself lucky.

That is unfortunate. A responsible adult such as yourself shouldn't get in such a tizzy over whether or not abortion is legal. Afterall, you'll NEVER have to an abortion.

But we're not talking about me. We're talking about the lives that have been taken, the ones that were destined for great things but never got to live out their destiny. Example: what if the person who was destined to find the cure for aids was aborted? But...lets not turn this into a religious debate as well.

Nope, I'll never have to have an abortion. If it happens, it's my responsibility. But based on the precautions I take, it's pretty hopeful that it wont happen until I'm good and ready for it.

That's what I've always understood -- EC can stop a fertilized egg from implanting. From Planned Parenthood:

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), "Emergency contraceptive pills...act by delaying or inhibiting ovulation, and/or altering tubal transport of sperm and/or ova (thereby inhibiting fertilization), and/or altering the endometrium (thereby inhibiting implantation)" (FDA, 1997).

I thought something that inhibits implantation would not be looked favorably on by somebody who is opposed to abortion.

Fetuses aren't living.

Abortion only kills the mother if she dies from it, the fetus is removed unharmed.

There are plenty of people in the world who can and will live out their destinies and invent cures for diseases. That is one emotional plea that I always found to be a pathetic one. Sorry. I notice that you have a little bit of factual information regarding birth control, however your tangent about teenagers did not get to the root of the issue. Do you know the demographic of the average women who seeks an abortion? Do you know what precautions they used when having sex? I'm curious.

I don't debate religion and I don't debate social issues from a religious standpoint. So, that tangent would be completely wasted on me.

That's fine if you would never get an abortion. I'd probably never get one, either, unless my life depended on it. Good thing we don't have to be pyschics and will hopefully always have the right to utilize our choice in the matter.

Well, either way, taking EC/MAP in the case of an "oops" within 72 hours is a whole lot better than taking RU486, or having it cut out of you. Taking RU486 (the abortion pill) or having the surgical procedure just means you sat on your butt and thought about it, and then chickened out about the responsibility. Whether you believe a fetus is living or not, is not the issue right now. Granted, I dont LIKE the idea, that it stops implantation of a fertilized egg, but you gotta choose your battles. I think EC/MAP is a whole lot better than the other alternatives.
