Until yesterday at lunch, our intern (age 21) believed Canada was part of the United States, and that North Dakota was located on the east coast... I don't know which is worse, but it is compounded by the fact that she is the Government Relations intern!

I've always been really good at geography. In 7th grade my teacher had a cow when I told him I knew where Sri Lanka and Madagascar were.
(I may not have spelled them right. I can't spell anything right. I did not feel like using spell check. Please don't have a cow.) |
You spelled them correctly. I always found Madagascar pretty interesting, isn't it the fourth largest island in the world? Now the thing that always confused me was Greenland, cos on the map when its all stretched out it looks bigger than Australia.
It's always fun to watch the opening ceremony for the Olympics and see how there's always one or two volcanic island countries I've NEVER heard of in my life (and probably never will again, at least until the next Olympics hehe). |

Bein a military brat and constantly on the move, US geography has always been rather easy for me. Add in the fact that my relatives lived in far away places, South Dakota and Long Island, and any trip to see them covered a few states at least. I can do pretty well with South American and older European countries but am totally lost when it comes to Eastern Europe and Africa. KS 361 |

That's because of the Mercator map projection... as you move north or south from the equator the distortion apparent from flattening the top of a sphere is noticeable. Quote:

Anyhow, when I was a little girl, my uncle travelled a LOT. As in, you can't name a city that he can't tell you something about. He decided that I needed to know geography (to know where he was), so I had new puzzles almost yearly for both the United States & the world in general. I am Carmen Sandiego!! :D |

Now would anyone even remotely understand about seriously competing in FAI Class S5C and S7? (S5C - Spacemodeling (model rocketry) Scale Altitude and S7 (Scale) competition - essentially the Olympic-level of competition model rocketry (spacemodeling in the rest of the world).) :D |
OKAY PEOPLE----
The big Miss America Secret revealed..... The reason why there are 51 women at Miss America is for 50 States plus the girl who represents the District of Columbia (which is a FEDERAL DISTRICT, not a STATE, but for the pageant, they act as though DC is a STATE). Therefore: 50+1=51 A few years back, I talked to an American Immigration Officer and asked him what Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands were considered to be (since they're not States, but they are kinda sorta kinda part of the US in general); he said that they were considered "Possessions of the U.S." Miss Puerto Rico does not compete at Miss America (though she does compete at Miss Universe). Funnily enough, in the early early days of Miss America (when it was not yet "standardized"), Canada actually went to Miss America. |

On a side note, as an undergrad I had a brother in the chapter who was puerto rican and was all about statehood. I'd give him grief about it all the time. Once I asked him "ya know why there is one star on your flag? Cause it aint ever gonna be on ours." lol |
Man, i think it would be cool if peurto Rico was a state. A same for the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, and Bermuda. We need to start enforcing the Monroe Doctirine.
