But if they're not my values, why should I observe them? If I moved to India, I probably wouldn't celebrate Diwali. I'd still decorate a tree, hang up a stocking, and sing "here comes Santa Claus" until I was blue in the face.

I know you're an immigrant just like I am: did you give up all of the traditions of your homeland as soon as you landed?

Vito Russo's "The Celluloid Closet" is a classic. It deals at length with lesbigay context and subtext in Hollywood. It's an entertaining and enlightening read.

I'm not an immigrant. I'm CBC. My parents came to Canada in the early 70s when they were in their 20s. They didn't give up EVERYTHING, but they gave up some things. Unlike some immigrants, they did not give me a "foreign" first name. They named me Cindy (which I later legally changed to Cynthia, because I wanted a more formal first name on my documents). As for moving to India, yes, I might very well participate in Diwali if I live there permanently, just like I'll celebrate Christmas in January if I move to a country where the predominant faith is Orthodox.

I went to a good old fashion private school too, and we sang hymns every week, but we celebrated the many different religions in our school.

Ummm, we celebrated other cultures in chapel as well....but it wasn't like someone from culture A is going to force the culture to me. I didn't have to try the food if I didn't want to. I didn't really force Chinese culture to the other girls. What really upset me once was that I wanted to sing an Italian aria from my voice exam repetoire, but the girl who ran the multi-cultural club told me that I wasn't allowed to, because it was hip-hop themed. That did it for me for multiculturalism.

Didnt you know it is against values to let consenting adults in stable loving relationships marry? Let's go back to Traditional Marriage- where your father gives you to some guy 3 times your age in exchange for a herd of sheep.

Going back to the original topic, does anyone else think it's weird that they have the words gay, lesbian, or bisexual after people's names, kind of like it's their occupation?

i thought that was one of the much touted benefits of western society: we're supposed to all be so free, and open minded and modern, that people could hold original, varying beliefs (AND NOT JUST PARROT THE MINDSET THAT'S CURRENTLY IN VOGUE), state their opinions, and rest assured that they won't get brow-beaten or ridiculed...hmmm--what happened here?

tau alumna, i may not agree with your beliefs, but i respect your right to voice your opinion, because that is how you feel--and i also respect you for having the GUMPTION and COURAGE to express it.

if this is how you feel, so be it--it doesn't bother me in the least--i'm still the same person i was when i read it...

i have my views as well, and i would expect you to extend the same respect for mine...at least that is what my idea of "free speech" is all about.

I'd like to apologize for my little attitude/spiel. Looking back at it, I'm wondering if it is, in reality, influenced by my family's Roman Catholic influenced Hong Kong Chinese culture. Anyway, once again, apologies for my spiel, and let's get back to the regularily scheduled program.
