True. Shall we then say the pissing contest is over?

However, since this is America & it's the land of the free, why then do people get all pissy over my right to express my opinion. Yes MKL & her boy have a right to do whatever they want. My opinion still stands. It's like politics. If you don't agree with the majority, then you're tarred & feathered b/c you're different. There. I'm done & out. Say what you like. I stand by my opinion as I'm sure others will stand by theirs.

But do you think that maybe they go into the sex industry because it provides them a measure of control over sexual situations, unlike their hitsory with sexual abuse? If that is empowering to them, why should I care?

Is it victimization if the victim doesn't feel victimized?

Not to say you think like anyone on the Real World Heather ;) but last night Sarah said the same thing - that the reason she is always pursuing men is because she was raped at a young age and if she makes the first move it puts her in the position of power.

Whether it really is a more powerful vantage point is debatable, but that is a topic for another day.

Oh, I agree -- psychobabbly speaking, I think that the control issues that sexual abuse causes can't be fixed as easily as all that. They run much deeper and probably would be best dealt with via therapy. But for some people, the sexual control that stripping (or the rest of the sex industry) provides can be an effective "band-aid" method, especially in limited doses.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 10-14-2004 08:04 AM

Does anyone really strip in "limited doses," though?

I'm not saying they don't have the right to do it -- of course they do. I'm merely saying, something happened to him when he was 12 that changed the way he thinks now. She caused it. It seems a lot to me like the cycle of physical abuse -- how if a father abuses his son and daughter, they're both very likely to continue the cycle by being abusers themselves, or with abusers.

Ladies, please leave BetteDavisEyes alone. I know you're not fans, but she didn't instigate anything in this thread, and it looks like you guys are attacking -- ganging up on? -- her.

If she's PMed you horrible things or said questionable stuff in other threads, keep it to those places, please. Jumping all over her here isn't making you look very classy.

The percentage of people that fit the definition of sexual abuse is really high. It effects people differently. Most often not at all.

A greater predictor os over all childhood experiences involving trust and security.

Remember, psychology is not a predictive science its an explanatory one.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 10-14-2004 10:15 PM

Actually it IS a predictive science.... hence the Behavioral Science Unit the FBI has. And that's what psychology is based on, understanding past behavior, predicting future behavior, and trying to make changes in the patterns that are leading that way.

I have no idea what you're basing this "abuse most often affects the victims not at all" theory on. Officially paging all social workers to this thread.........
