I was offered the job - so now the pressure is really on for me to find a place to live.

The job offically begins October 1st...

I know I'll need to fly out to NYC to find a place to live - and i know that can be a crazy process. Does anyone have any idea of how many days I wouild need to truly find a good place/ how far in advance I should do that (next week? mid september?)

I know the republican Convention is going on soon, so the city will be crazy, so i want to put it off until after that.

First off, congratulations. Second, you can probably find a place within a couple of days. Most people I know who have gone looking have found the apartment they want within a weekend. I don't suggest coming during the time of the convention, but you can avoid Manhattan altogether too, and just look in the outer boros. Are you really familiar with NYC? What is your budget in terms of finding an apartment right now? If you go with a broker things will probably be a whole lot easier if you can afford it, since they do most of the work for you. It is good to know that a lot of "no fee apartments" are kind of gross. (At least in my experience). I've seen many roach infested dwellings in these listings. Also "no fee" you are often in competetion with a gazillion other people for the same apartment. How much time are you able to spend/afford to spend in the city (I don't know if you are staying at a hotel) to look for an apartment? You can probably easily find a roommate within a weekend too if you want to go that route. Keep us posted :)

Congratulations on the job! Do NOT come here during the RNC convention. Your trip will be less productive if you do, and getting around town will be an exercise in frustration.

Maybe she can check online for Columbia, NYU etc? Maybe there are students that need roomies? I am sure they are living as cheaply as possible anyway.

Also, sorority contacts? Are there chapters of your sorority in the City Mullet?

LOL I thought about that when I first found out too.

Or how about James's all-too-perfect set-up: "Sorority contacts? Wait, do you mean Alpha Xi Delta? Or Delta Zeta? Or that whole non-existent sorority she's a part of?"
