Fraterday
At Purdue the word frat has been embraced by the (self-proclaimed) frat boys.
They have Fraterday (an all-day low-key party (really more of a bunch of sorority girls and guys hanging out on the front lawn) on a nice day) in which there is a great Fratmosphere and everyone has a Frattastic time. I've asked friends at other schools if they do this and they've never heard of it; maybe someone else has? Often when there aren't enough people outside socializing someone will say, "it's not fratty enough out here!" and recruit more people to join. They all refer to their house as "the frat house" and to each other as frat boys. Basically, I think everyone should have this sense of humor; the word frat isn't going away any time soon. And if non-greeks know it bugs us, well, theyre going to use it even more! |
When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

And I think Fraterday and Fratmosphere are the greatest words since "smash" and "hot like fire." |
I sometimes say "frat" but only when I dont want to say the whole word, call it lazy, but I dont mean it bad any way. The fraternities at my school do get mad when they are called frats, BUT the fraternities I hang out with at another school do call themselves a frat. I dont understand why they do that after reading everyone's post about this abbreviation.

I don't use the word Frat because, at least to me, it has a bad conotation. However I'm not hung up on it and tend to overlook it if others use it. It's just my personal feeling and decision.
In terms of its use by our Black and Latin Greek brothers, who am I to question their traditions? |
Erik,
I still haven't seen you specifically reply to the people who have said that NIC orgs and NPHC orgs use the term in different manners. Are you saying that "frat" should not be used by any org? If so, what do you have to say about the NPHC, LGLO and MCGLO traditions? |

My statement bears repeating. I'll even throw in some qualifiers for free.
1) I often use the word frat. 2) I served my chapter in 4 different officer positions as an undergrad. 3) I served as recruitment chair of IFC. 4) I am an active alumni in good standing with my fraternity. 5) I was asked by the headquarters of my fraternity to serve as an advisor to a colony. 6) I have served as VP of the local alumni association. 7) I am now hold a directorship position on our alumni association's board of directors. 8) I believe myself to be both educated and respected. 9) I will continue to use the term frat as long as I feel liek using it. As a matter of spite and becasue I like them, I have just added the terms Fraterday and Fratastic to my lexicon. |
I wish that Thursday could be Fraterday...
