Pennsylvania IS NOT like the midwest. We've been around twice as long as most of the Midwest, for one thing. Anything I say everyone will say I'm stereotyping - but trust me, it's two different animals.

In what way is it different? Come on, you've gotta at least give us examples. :p

The only thing I can think of is that you've got way more Amish people . . . ;)

People from NY and NJ are always in a rush.) We are also very diverse, and I get the impression that the midwest is pretty white bread. Minus the cities, of course. NJ is a mini US- we have every culture, religion, sexual orientation, etc, known to man in a very small space. It seems that the midwest is mostly White Christians. My friend from Illinois, who lived in a suburb of Chicago (which she said was more diverse than most of the midwest) was in culture shock when she moved to Jersey. She said everything was different.

Plus, we are very overcrowded, have short tempers, and we KNOW our Italian food. fuhgettaboutit!

I just wanted to see if it was possible to answer this question without offending me. As I suspected, it's not.

Spell check is my friend.

I can't even spell jurisdiction.

Or maybe I can.

Oklahoma?

I know this is a little off topic but what about Oklahoma? We aren't really Southern (at least not "Deep South"), we certainly aren't Northern, if Wisconsin is the Midwest I doubt we fit there, and we are in the middle of the country so we aren't really Southwest. Where do we fit in?

My rush was more like a Souther rush than anything.

33, no disrespect sweetie, but to we Philadelphians, even PITTSBURGH is the midwest! Life is just more laid back in the midwest...that's all I can say. Yes, you have Chicago and St. Louis and other large cities where things are different, but even the folks in my old job in our Chicago office told us we were all so uptight and such here in the east. let's face it...we ARE!

I think you're a plains state, but I def. consider your rush to be like the Southern ones.

I agree that from a Rand McNally standpoint, Oklahoma is a Plains State. However, from a Greek Life standpoint, Oklahoma is definetly Southern.

And as for her claim about the South funding our orgs, that's just ridiculous.

Others, however, feel it has moved to Dixie.

What it comes down to is mostly semantics. Basically, the Midwest is broken up into two subsections: Great Lakes (Wisconsin, Illinois, etc.) and Great Plains (Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, etc.). People in Wisconsin are more likely to refer to themselves as the Midwest and Oklahomans as living in the "Plains states" -- I would never think of myself as living in the "Great Lakes" region, for example. But for people who live in Oklahoma, for example, usually think of themselves as living in the Midwest too.

Basically, I think it's mostly personal. I would say that "the Midwest" covers the western half of Pennsylvania through Iowa. To some people who live out West, they consider Wisconsin to be "on the East Coast." To some people who live out East, they consider Wisconsin to be "on the West Coast." ;)

In terms of Greek life, I think Oklahoma outdoes even some of the biggest Southern rushes.
