I think some of you are taking experiences that I've had too personally. Was I referring to you? No. I've never met any of you personally. If you had a good pledge ed program and know your greek alphabet, great. Some people either probably did not, or they just don't remember.

I don't think people were picking on you or being defensive. I think these posts were just adding to your solution!

The only thing that irks me is some NPC members lack of knowledge of their own council, its member orgs, and policies.

Glitter650 12-22-2005 03:51 PM

It bothers me when people have NO CLUE about NPC policies or the spirit in which council was formed... I've heard ladies say, "oh panhellenic really doesn't do anything. and the fraternities on my campus can't get their act together to form any sort of council or even plan an event together.

Thanks. I guess I read it wrong. :)

I get irked by people who are only active until they meet the boy or girl of their dreams. If you are just trying to get into parties, be-friend a greek. If you just want to date, try match.com.

i think we can all agree on the major issues here:

rivalry
lack of education
lack of communication
lack of dedication
hazing
alcohol abuse
money
lack of community
disregard for rules
lack of true leadership
philanthropy vs. service

okay, now what can we do about this stuff? in our chapters, at our campuses, in our nationals, and in the community?

This is a great opportunity for improvement. Just think 20+ greeks posted here and agree that changes are necessary for the improvement, growth and overall existance/sucess of greek life (which we all agree is an amazing, life changing opportunity). Just think if just these people went out and talked one person on their campus into trying to work on just one area stated above. and then that person got another..... all it really takes is for someone to step up, stop the complaining and put words into action!!!

also, i suggest all of you undergrads look into UIFI, if you have not already gone. its really eye opening and educational experience and a great support system for taking that first step. more info is at http://nicindy.org I especially urge NPHC and MCGLOs to try to get to a session if they can. It is a great opportunity to open the communication between NIC/NPC orgs and the NPHC/BLGC.

Good luck all and happy holidays!

I've always wondered at which point in 'Greek Life' history did greek life fall into some of the issues listed above. I mean, were those issues always there and we never noticed until recently, or, did these issues just occur over the last 20 or so years?

another thing that irks me about Greek Life...although not about it in particular...is that people use it as a stepping stone towards other things, such as SGA positions, exec board positions for student associations, etc...they join the organization, make themselves known on campus, use their new found popularity to get elected to something else, then never contribute to the sorority/fraternity they joined. Anyone else feel like this is familiar?

But, I've still met greeks who don't know the whole alphabet beyond their own letters.
Oh - let's just say that on our national exam more than 1 or 2 or 5 people could NOT list the Greek Alphabet and DEFINITELY did not even list some of the letters of AXO or the chapter name! Um - hello! If you can't think of all the letters, then shouldn't you start with those 5?!

I learned the hard way in school - let's just say that I can still recite the entire alphabet faster than anyone I have ever met!

But that is beside the point - grades grades grades! I think that if I made up this awesome sounding social & everyone showed up and it was really a study seminar or something, I think that would be hilarious!

2. Gossip. WTF! If you date anyone in the greek system all your business is public knowledge. Within 24 hrs your story comes back to you and totally distorted. Going through an issue with an ex right now, shes so INSANE!

It doesn't even have to be someone you date in the greek system, just hooking up is enough to have major gossip and everything spread around. I hate it which is why I've said I would never date a greek...or hook up with anyone that was still active...the last part of it I didn't keep...and wish I did.

I think it should be mandatory that we learn about other sororities & fraternities that are NOT on our campus. I learned by looking them up, looking at websites, and LEARNING! Most of the time, you only learn the names of the houses on your campus.

As NME I made them learn all 26 NPC's and not only the other two on campus...they knew they had tobe known...evne if they only knew the simpler ones, like Tri Delt, Tri Sig, and the two letters one...They learnt them.

This thread is starting to remind me of Andy Rooney's quote "It's amazing how long this country has been going to hell without ever having gotten there."

otw, i also had to learn the greek alphabet when i was a pledge(which is what we were called back in the day)-we were expected to be able to recite it, and to recognize and be able to write the letters. we also were expected to know all the fraternities and sororities on the campus and know how to write their names in greek letters, we even used to sing a song as we escorted our rush guests out of the house that incorporated the greek alphabet-i used to sing it to my kids when i would rock them to sleep, so now they know it too!
We had to do this too. Our song was similar to the ABC's, but my cousin learned another Greek letter song during her first semester.

I have a goal as the advisor to my local to have the girls research (if they want) an organization outside of the NPC/IFC realm, because the only chapters the girls seem to know are the ones on campus.

Recieting the Greek Alphabet while holding a Paper Match!:)

Was very Good at it and would put New Guys to shame!

But the idea is and shouold be to learn about Other Greek Organizations. If You have to ask why? Don't. We are not all alone out there.

I just hope ariesrisings Site is still up. It is Fantastic and The most comprehensive I have every seen!

I am not sure and will have to check to see if I Froze it in Alum Thread!
