I want to see us grow in the South! Even if its only in NC.....does anyone know what opportunities we have available to us right now other than Oklahoma? |
Alpha Phi in Kansas
A Phi still has a good rep in Kansas. When I was at KU the Phis
had a new house, they were a good chapter, lots of girls, fun ones to exchange and date. Then I heard they were gone, quite a shock. YES, hell yes, oughta be back. K-State, I'd think, would welcome Alpha Phi, just need a spark plug and there oughta be a lot of Topeka alums, perhaps Wichita who would help. K-State has a GREAT greek system and there is no reason Alpha Phi is not present...Go for it...now! Fort Hays...The nat' pres of Sig Ep is the CEO there and a nat'l officer of TKE is dean; men's groups are SAE, TKE, Sig Chi; no reason why the Phis could not have a good chapter there, they'd be a goodie. Hays is an oasis in western Kansas. And Emporia is a goodie, too, with Chi O & Tri Sigma & Alpha Sig powerhouses, need competition... Finally, K-State at Salina, a new campus, now open for greeks. Alpha Phi...get busy! While we are at it, Pittsburg State is ripe for a sorority rejuvenation. So, KU, K-State, Emporia, Hays, Pittsburg, Manhattan, Salina. Like I said: "Get busy" Old TKE field rep '57-60 still active... |

I don't remember K-State in Salina being much more than a really sad little satellite campus on the west side of town with a few aeronautics classes. Of course that was "a while" ago. Has that changed??? |
Salina is SUCH a dump, if you ask me! I would stay the heck away from Emporia too. K-State is a great suggestion and it would be terrific to be part of such a great greek tradition. Of course, going back to KU should be on the list!
|
Hey there girlie, I used to live in that dump!
Seriously though, I'm just curious to hear that there is anything in Salina for a campus as there sure wasn't in the past and there didn't seem to be any intention of building the campus beyond the barns out on the way to the airport. The town struggled just to build it's juco presence, I can't even imagine a state school growing there. Excuse me now while I go click the heels of my ruby slippers! |
Salina???
A CA in CA refers to Salina as not having any campus or so I
understood. Well, Kansas Wesleyan has been there a hundred years. I do not know of any "juco" there. Marymount College, a private Catholic school, folded a few years back. The vacating of the Smoky Hill Air Force Base provided the "campus" for the K-State entry, presumably to offer an aeronautical curriculum. This was a sneaky move by KSU to inch into Salina, as they began to offer a few 'here and there' courses, gradually increasing the numbers...then Phi Delta Theta and one other NIC outfit entered the campus, well-publicized, and housed...It is now a full-fledged operation. I think the Vo Tech operation is still in place, too. Many of us were shocked at K-State's move, but then we are not in control...it is paradoxical that Kansas is adding even MORE 4 year institutions, lord only knows there are plenty of jucos, now called "community colleges." I base this knowledge on having been a dean at one of these (6 years) and a PhD dissertation on Kansas colleges. Salina is the 3rd or 4th largest town, and I've never heard of it as a "dump," I am a 5th generation Kansan. Anyhow, good luck, Phis! Erik P Conard, TKE alum, Denver |
I'm multi-generational Kansan as well and I also lived in Salina for a few years. Being one of the larger towns in KS is no real accomplishment. In my opinion, it is a dump. (no offense CA in CA ... Wichita is not a whole lot better and that's where I grew up)
Extension resources should never be wasted on such a small opportunity. K-State and KU are the only Kansas schools left that deserve more attention from a large org like A-Phi. Even then, KS schools likely don't rank as high in terms of opportunity when compared to other regions of the country. Nonetheless ... I would be proud to be back at KU and K-State would be a nice option. |

Oh, and I had to google for the juco I was trying to remember. I *think* it was Brown Mackie in Salina. Sounds right anyway. I just have memories of them struggling to grow in a town where there was little room to do so at the time. They were looking at converting an old run down flea bag hotel just off the main drag downtown into pseudo dormitory living space for their students. I have no idea if it ever flew but it was the most god-awful thing I had heard of given what their options were. Anyway, that dump, pit, and maybe even the flea bag hotel (ok, not the flea bag hotel) will always have a soft spot in my heart because it was home, for a while anyway. There's no place like home!:D Especially when you can't get a Sonic Burger, tots, and a cherry limeade in California to save your soul.:p |
Salina...and Kansas
The Brown-Mackie outfit is a private business school with several
locations, like now in Denver. They are a glorified shopping mall type school, no real campus, and certainly not a "juco" like the twenty six community colleges we have in Kansas. I do not know much about them other than they have been around a long, long time and have little stature. There have been a great number of business colleges over the years in Kansas; most have closed and the community colleges, cheaper, have filled that void. Salina had a normal school about 1900. It was, at one time, the largest 'college' in Kansas. About 1910 or so it burned down. The Marymount College was a vain attempt by the catholics to put in a school with a basketball team. They were better at basketball than they were with education and they folded several years ago with an unimpressive history. Now, please do not be too tough on Hays. The sororities may be well-established in your mind, but they certainly have not gained a lot of following. Alpha Gam, Tri Sigma, Sigma Kappa and maybe DZ. Alpha Sig inactive. Of the men's, TKE died and now back, SAE is new, Sigma Chi...make up active men's, and Sig Ep, Delta Sig, AKL, Phi Sig, Sig Tau, all dead. In the past 40 years TKE and Sig Ep were largest but up and down, size-wise. Ratty housing. Hardly a stable campus, as you intimate and likely none of the sororities firm compared to Emporia's Chi O, A Sig & Tri Sigma. Finally, I am not trying to coerce Alpha Phi to go anywhere they do not want. I was simply trying to impart information and your extension plans are your business. I do wish you well! |

Just wondering, where is Alpha Phi colonizing this year? I had some sisters ask and I couldn't remember.
Thanks! |
Possible expansion...
University of San Francisco (not UCSF but the Jesuit undergrad school) is considering expansion and alums are very interested in pursuing. I think there is a DZ chapter but I'm not sure about other NPC at that school.

Just wondering. I don't think that GC will be expanding in the near future because AGD was just installed in 1999 and we were the first group in 30 years to join the campus. But I would love to hear why Georgetown College was pointed out so! Thanks! |

the greek system at uncw has gone down the tubes in recent months. fraternities are being kicked off left and right......i would talk about it, but i'm not too fond of the current greek advisor there and i'd probably end up saying something very harsh (but true) |
