And you have to give her a lot of credit. Yo udid not see her yelling or screaming. She didn't hit anybody. She said she did not want to discuss it, and went on her way. When he apologised, she accepted his apology.

What more should she have done? I can't see that I would have handled it that differently.

I thought at the restaurant she was a little harsh. And she did raise her voice to him. She wasn't yelling/screaming or anything, but she got really...fiesty about it. I understand her getting upset about it. But at the same time, I don't think he said that's what he believed in...he was saying what his uncle would tell him. I never got the impression he too believed that. If he did, then maybe that's another story.

Like I said, she could have tried to see where he got that point of view (if he shared his uncle's point of view as well) and tried to educate him that black people ARE educated and do go to college, etc. Instead, she told all that stuff to the camera and NOT to him. To me, it just seemed like he was trying to tell her what he grew up around and why his uncle didn't hire black people. Also, her not speaking to him for a whole day and waiting for him to apologize....hmm, that was a little dramatic. I mean, I guess cuz I didn't think he meant to offend her. But that's just me. I'll have to watch it again...perhaps I missed something.

I will have to check it in re-runs too, because I thought he was saying that black people were all uneducated and slow, or that that's how it was in his hometown or something. I know that Malik also said that he was hurt by whatever was said (although CLEARLY not enough to do anything but avoid Mike for a minute or two rather than talking about it or saying anything about it). When he said it she just looked upset and was like "you will not talk like that while I am at this table, so be quiet". That's how it came across to me. And then even MIKE said that he regretted what he said and that he was wrong. So that's why I think she was right for what she did.

Plus I know you have to understand how it is. Don't you get tired of playing teacher sometimes? I don't want to be responsible for teaching white folks about us all the time, I'm just tired of playing that role, so I can understand why she might not want to either.

Yep, I totally understand this. I went to a pre-dom white jr high and high school. So I got my fair share of that.
I wanna see it again though b/c I missed some of it anyway. And I wasn't clear of how Malik felt about it. I know it didn't seem like he said much about it. But if so, then I must have missed that too! I need to start watching w/ the captions on cuz I swear those people mumble something awful! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I'm sorry, but Kameelah does NOT represent the big sistah. I saw her in person and she is very small. Sharon on London(the most boring one out of all the RR's) came off as a punk! She let everyone tease her and ended up crying about every dang thing.

Malik is very cute and smart. I kinda like the hair! And he might change it during the show.

Is it just me, or does Nicole look like Trina, only prettier? She's a little ghetto, but I like her!

I'm sorry, but Coral is my GIRL! I would of been 10 times worse than she was on Mike. Like she said, even if he DID think that, what in the WORLD would make him say that mess? Even when he said it, he kinda hesitated!

I honestly didn't think anything could top RR 9(and I must say, I can't stand Teck, he is always on MTV yellin summin) but this one looks good!

Rachel is Amaya over Colin all over again, get over it girl!

lovelyivy84... I have to agree that David from New Orleans was HILARIOUS!!!! My friends and I laughed sooooooo hard at him. He was corny anyway.

Back to Coral...she's just keeping it real. She dealt with Mike the best way she could and like I said before...just like me.

Anyway, I can't wait to see what happens this season. It should be GREAT!!

I know this thread has developed into how the people of RW represent African Americans, but I want to add my white girl take on the Coral/Mike situation. I don't think Mike would have mentioned race if he was racist He kept being asked where he was from and I think the conversation was an extension of those questions. I think that if the conversation had gone further we would have realized that Mike was saying "that's what Uncle Bob thinks, but I know he's wrong." At least that's what I hope he meant. We're all teachers at some point. Coral & Malik could have said "I went to ABC U., and he went to EFG U., we're educated." I don't believe there were bad intentions by anyone involved. Sorry to intrude.

This season of the real world does look like it will be more interesting than some of the past years. I am interested to see how things do play out with Coral and Nicole, particularly the argument they highlighted. For all the talk of stereotyping Black men, I hope the show does not take the opportunity to stereotype their way around Black women either.

As far as Mike and Coral were concerned-
IMHO, he sounded as if he was saying that his Uncle did not hire Black people because he had found them to be slow. He did nut sound as though he thought that conclusion was untrue. He sounded as though he felt that it was not true across the board but that where his uncle was it was the case. He sounded as if he was trying to explain the situation by saying "but it is not there fault- their schools are not good." I felt as though he did not see why what he was saying may be offensive to Coral and Malik because he continued to try to justify why it was the lack of education. I do not feel that he was leading to Uncle Bob was wrong just that Uncle Bob did not understand that their ignorance was out of their control.

As Malik and Coral walk away from the diner he does say that he was insulted by the comment but decided there was no need for him to say anything because Coral had handled it.

I hope Maik does take the opportunity to be open and learn new things. I think it is going to be harder with this cast because of Coral’s strong personality and fact that he is a guy unlike Julie in Nawlins. I think he has a healthy dose f male arrogance to overcome throughout the learning process.

Well like my grandma used to say, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions.". Unfortunately Heidi Ho, Black people in America are constantly put into the position of being the "educator" when it comes to race. We deal with it in the class room, with fellow students, professors, co-workers, supervisors, doctors, pastors, you name it, and we have to face it everyday.
I don't believe that Mike is a card carrying member of aryian nations united or anything, but he like every other person raised in western society, is indoctrinated from birth with the racism inherent in this culture.
Mike even insinuated that Coral was not familiar with the education system in his area, so in his opinion, it was very possible that his uncle was right. He said at one point that the reason his uncle gave made a lot of sense to him. So while I doubt he will burn a cross on a Black person's yard, that racist belief will make a huge impact on the world when it comes time for him to make hiring decisions in a future job, or the way he treats fellow co-workers opinions or research. So while he may not have meant to offend Coral and Malik, he did--and not just on a surface level. When you have to live with ignorance every day, and you know that sincere ignorance, hurts sincerely, then comments like that cannot go unchallenged. And why should Coral and Malik have had to say anything about their own education? That merely validates uncle bob's opinion of the Black people in Bob's area, and makes Coral and Malik the "exception" to the rule. As in "you're not like most Black people".
I hope you understand what I'm saying. Moderators, I know this is long, but as I saw it as a "teachable" moment, I decided to "be an educator" one mo' gin! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Ok like I absoutely love RW/RR and will be posting in here like after every episode!!!

First of all I have to agree with lastpoetinsite and say "ditto"!! ( about the whole Segun situation)

Then,
Coral has a few Ayanna tendencies in her.....I understand her distaste for the comment however she is no fool. It was obvious that Mike was not a racist in that hateful way. He clearly stated how his uncle felt, and provided what his uncle claimed to be justifications for his assumptions. He seemed open to discuss the matter futher. Perhaps Coral should have calmed down and taken the opportunity to teach him.

Will someone hand Nicole a mirror!!!! The blue eye shadow is overwhelming.

Malik is not cute. Not in the least bit.

Lori is to available and toooo aggressive. When someone is not responding as aggressively (sp) you might want to slow your roll, Playa!

On RR:
Jisela is a whimp!!! She punked out by not even trying to reach for the ladder.

Ellen ---shoulda whipped some Morrocan a$$!!

Ta Ta For Now!!!

don't you just love malik? he seems genuinely sweet! trying to teach mike rather than be mean will be so much more effective. it's obvious he doesn't know much about our culture. teach him, don't expect him to know but know he doesn't and hold it against him (if that makes sense). malik just seems so cool.

and he really likes nicole. i thought it was cute when he was like, and i'm paraphrasing, "we flirt but we are meeting outside people, but, i keep coming back to her." so adorable!! and he poured her orange juice when she got home! why is she looking elsewhere when he is right there?? but i promise ya'll, i want to grab nicole and wash her face! she is a cute gal, but that is too much makeup!!

and coral is such a b*tch!! why doesn't she relax, relate and release? and what was up with the blanket on her head?? i was so glad that imani, or whatever, didn't just take sides with her. he was real.
