Last time I checked my birth certificate, it reads I was born in Flushing, Queens, New York. 'Far as I know, that makes me a New York City native. Granted, I may not have returned back to "The City So Nice They Named It Twice" in years but I think I've earned the right to call it 'New Yawk', since it's about the closest you can get to a New York accent in print. :p

Y'all southern gals still carry smelling salts? Thats adorable. :)

But yeah most words that apply to sexual organs or the process pf producing body waste can take me aback in a conversation.

God damn . . isn't something bothers me, or Jesus Christ, although they aren't terms I use.

If you use G.D. or "retarded" or any of the crude slang words for female anatomy in front of me, it's not that my eyes roll back in my head or I keel over and ask for my smellin' salts or swear you out of my life forever.

It's just that I think so highly of the people that I interact with and I prefer to see them use words that reflect their class, maturity, and intellect....

NIGGARDLY-can't you use a different word to describe something/someone that is stingy. :o

1) I personally know no one, who pronounces New York, "New Yawk."
2) "The City So Nice They Named It Twice" refers to New York, New York which is Manhattan, and not any other borough.

SHE SAID SHE DIDN'T LIKE IT. Regardless of the meaning, sometimes people just don't like when certain words are said. That's what this thread is about.

Why must you say stupid things that make no sense?

I see so if an American couple go to France on vacation and their child is born in the hotel, they return to the States shortly after and the child is no longer there, then that child is a native of NY.

OK right.

The NY accent in print? So every single time you post about NY you have to imitate a NY accent in print? Actually it's certain people from certain parts that have that accent. Perhaps in the next post you make you can talk about how you are a huge knife fighter because you're a New Yawker. That'd just be great.

You're a Florida native. Accept it. You wrote a book about your memorable experience going to high school in Florida. You went to college somewhere else, but came back to Florida. Your connection with NY is nill.

OK, I'm willing to settle for almost nil. :) Can't deny I was born in New York, but I was raised in South Florida, in an area that was populated (then) by former New Yorkers who went south to retire.

Now let's get this topic back on track before it splits... :D

I know its a double standard . . .

But when pretty girls use language harsher than "damn."

IT just jars and sounds worse than a man doing it.

Hottytoddy, I think that's a BIT different???

Banter between friends and throwing around the word all the time in daily life just ain't the same. They know [probably] you don't hate them for who they are, they [probably] can take it in the spirit it is meant.

It's a whole world away from conversations (of people aged over 8) like "you got a pen?" "yeah you can have this one but it's a bit gay" etc...
Would the replacement of a more sensitive word be so acceptable? "you got a pen?" "yeah you can have this one but it's a bit negro". No of course not (!!!) - there'd be outcry if people went around saying that - and rightly so. But one minority group is not acceptable to use in this way more than the next.
Using adjectives (however spelt) which refer to a minority group to say something is bad or sub-par isn't okay. Respecting different sensibilities is about maturity. Comments like "there's this guy and he's gay and he's just fiiiine with it" don't change it. Often, people do have a problem with it, whether they say so or not. And they aren't at fault for having a problem with it when part of who they are is used an a synonym for nasty, substandard, annoying.

This post reminded me--

My cousin uses the word "Jewish" as a synonym for stupid. For example, if a door is broken, he'll say, "Damn Jewish door" or something to that effect. I was shocked the first time I heard him say that. Not sure where he picked it up.
