While they (they're a people, not a "character") are considered a part of Hawaiian mythology, some Hawaiian scholars actually say that they did exist. Fishponds and heiau from Kauai suggest that the menehune built them long before the first known voyagers from the Marquesas and Raiatea set foot in the Islands in the 11th Century. They're said to live in the forest, but no -- their job isn't to guard waterfalls. They're builders and tricksters. Why anyone would want to call their significant other that is beyond me. After all, menehune (pronounced meh-neh-hoo-neh, not meh-knee-hoo-knee) are often called the Hawaiian version of dwarfs and trolls because of their size and big bellies. But hey, if the fiance wants to = you to a short and plump Hawaiian troll, go for it! Quote:

Three things... 1. I find most terms of endearment annoying. Hence, why I call the boy, The Boy. 2. We better pray hard through Utah. 3. When I think of the menehune (after thinking back to the guy who talked story with us at the fishpond who mentioned them) I think about the guy on the waterbottles. I cannot remember the name of the company right now, but I can totally picture him. I need to google image search. I'll be back. Duh! Its Menehune Water Company! |

http://www.hawaiiwater.com/_library/...nehunelogo.gif I've never really been a big fan of Menehune Water. Maybe it's because of the blue bottle...but to me it tastes like plastic. The fact that we're driving through Utah on a Sunday is kinda funny. |
OTW, thanks for explaining "menehune" to me. We were not aware that they were the Hawaiian equivalent of trolls.
Anyway, yes, I am short 5'2. But, plump I am not. I'm about 100 lbs. He calls me that simply because I'm much shorter than he is AND I have honey-blonde hair. And he thinks I'm sweet. Still, I appreciate you clarifying the "menehune" for me. |
