TH didn't win :( I can change the channel now.

JD'07 03-05-2006 11:59 PM

I have to admit, I'm kinda happy TH didn't win for playing a pimp. Just like I'm still upset Denzel won for being a bad cop versus Hurricane, Malcom X, etc...

Being from Memphis.....

I must say that it is been very controversial issue having the TRIPLE (666) SIX (not Three six, fellow Memphians know the real) Mafia representing Memphis on a world wide stage. Memphis is a very image conscious (being that it was the place were Dr. King was assassinated and Memphis, Egypt being the city of the Dead, etc.). When they announced the winner, I thought, Oh Lord!!! What will they do back home? Triple Six actually cleaned up the song (even moreso than a radio edit) and some people in Memphis think that they censored themselves for the "Stuffy white conservatives" of the academy as someone posted earlier (though I agree with the stuffy and white part, I don't think there are many conservatives in Hollywood), more than they would for the black ghetto youth of Memphis who are their target audience (but not the chief consumers, mind you, who are middle class white teen suburbanites). Do we celebrate these black young "entrepreneuers" from Memphis, or do we decry the celebration of misogyny, exploitation, self degradation and vice of the infamous Memphis Pimp image? After all, Terrance Howard went on Jay Leno recently and proclaimed to the nation that M.E.M.P.H.I.S really stood for Making Easy Money Pimpin' H-'s In Style.

Blackwatch!!!!!!

MEMPHIS: Was he serious? Was it a joke?

Bro. Jones 03-06-2006 02:19 AM

Well, Im from Memphis as well... and yes, that is a widely popular acronym used by 'some' Memphians.

Regardless, I was proud of those guys. I remember how they first started... as high school kids selling tapes out of their trunk and to local record stores and car accessory shops (Mr. Z's and Car Toyz). Yes, they were originally called Triple Six Mafia and changed their name once they became more National. Not once in their music have they said they worship the Devil. In fact, I think they were the only one's who went on stage and said "I'd like the thank Jesus". Again, Im proud of them even though some may think the win and/or the group is controversial. How many rap artists can say that they have won an Oscar for their music?

Did anyone happen to catch when Jamie Foxx did his presentation speech and paused when he had to read "South African American" ... and then he said "strange"? I hear ya Jamie... I hear ya.

Also, I'll like to say congratulations to Reese Witherspoon, another Tennesseean who won an Oscar tonight.

Almost 3-6, but not quite

Here's an interesting thought,

The Three Six Mafia almost won their Oscar on 3/6/06.

[Near] Coincidence? I don't think so...

The "Thank Jesus/my Lord and Savior" thing is required for rappers (no matter how vulgar) during acceptance speeches, isn't is??

Question for ya because I'm not really familar with the group...were there rumors that they worshipped the devil? How did they come up with the name?

I have to say... I was slightly proud....and slightly embarassed.
Proud because hip-hop (however it may come) is being recognized as being a true expression or art form. Not that we really need 'them' to recognize us....but... you know. And although they are not my top choice to represent it...they still do it in thier own fashion. A small victory is still a victory. Also to see them truly happy and unpretentious about being thankful was refreshing. They didn't act too ignorant. And did anyone catch how Queen almost forgot where she was.... it was too funny.
On the other hand... like I stated earlier...they are not my choice of best representation... I mean... you choose to name yourself...'Crunchy black'?!!?! . The beats and melody.... I can deal with ... stupid lyrics.... i can't get over. So... i guess i'm conflicted.

evaclear, thats exactly how I felt. I was like watch her say Its hard out here.. and she did.. I fell off the bed. Literally.

AKA2D '91 03-06-2006 12:29 PM

Dayum! You fell OFF the bed! LMAO

I shook my head the ENTIRE time, ESPECIALLY during their acceptance speech . :o

How can people who have Lucifer you are god lucifer you are king in the hook of their song say thank you Jesus?

I am in a total outrage at that.

Listen to stay fly... that girl mumbling in the back ground is singing about Lucifer and the crazy part is one of the rappers says lucifer twice before they start their verse... thisis craziness... i used to love there music now i'm afraid to listen to it...

LAWD! The folks and their jig...have mercy! LOL

(Playing Devil's Advocate for the Academy), remember black folks complained that we were being nominated for the Oscar. Now, we are nominated and have won and 'you people' still aren't satisfied. :p
