Does any one know how you take the pills? Orally? Vaginally? And what happens to you after you take it?

Anyone?

I know people like to think that in that magical time before Roe vs. Wade that women did not have sex before marriage or married women never tried to limit the number of children in her family. But lets face it...people ("loose" or not) were having sex outside the bounds of holy matrimony, in every culture on every continent within every regilon through out history...people had sex!

It's as natural as being born, eating, taking a poop, and dying. Human kind has natural needs that instinctively drive us. No papal bull, fatwa, or holy decree from TV will stop people from sastifing said needs. Not everyone has or wishes for the will power to stop their natural urges.

To think that women are going to be any less or more concerned with sex because the morning after pill is OTC is like saying if we cut the price of cigarettes more people will smoke! By taking away a barrier to acess does not instantly mean the number of users will increase nor does it mean a direct increase of frequency of use. If anything, its a relief that acess is easier because it should prevent more invasive or potentially harmful procedures.

America has to face it, we are a secular country. We were formed for human rights. A female citizen of the United States has a right to freedom and happiness. And if her freedom and happiness does not fall under your moral standard...its not for you to decide what is right for her. Last time I checked, my eggs are not citizens of the United States...I am.

If we were to ban all forms of birth control...do you know who would be "punished" more than the "loose women". Women like you. Loose women will have sex, birth control or not. Women like you who are generally responsible and respect themselves, but sill have accidents and are mortal and human....they will be the ones who are hurt the most by denial of birth control. These women are your sisters, you friends, aunts, mothers, cousins, etc. Even married women are hurt if they don't have birth control...even more so than non-married women...because they are required to up hold their marital duties (ei sleep with their husbands) on a regular basis. I plan on having 3 to 4 children, but if I can't handle it financially, emotionally, etc...I would like to still be able to sleep my husband without negotating. And really, do you really want extremely morally degenerate people reproducing and rasing children? Do you really want another child to be born into poverity? Do you really want to see another girl have to put aside her dreams to raise a child on her own?

In this day and age, with the world teetering on over-population we need to think to the future and how to perseve a decent way of living.

Stand up for the rights of your sex! Even if you are against abortions/birth control personally...do it for other women. Let them be free to decide what is best for their bodies!!!

There are 2 pills you must take 12 hours apart. The pill can either delay ovulation, hinder fertilization, or alter the lining of the uterus, not allowing the implantation of the embryo/fertilized egg. The morning-after pill carries the side effects of regular birth control pills, including: changes in menstrual cycle; nausea; vomiting; headaches; abdominal pain or cramping; weight gain; and hot flashes. Additional side effects of the morning-after pill include: swelling of the face, ankles or feet; unusual tiredness or weakness; acne; trouble sleeping; loss of sexual desire; skin rash; mental depression; blood clot formation; numbness; and ectopic pregnancy.

I come back and this post has blossomed! Great post, MiAngel. I'm glad the confusion is dying down regarding the MAP vs. RU-486. :)

I hope that my anecdote about my friend wasn't construed as my believing that women will become more promiscuous if the MAP is OTC. My point was that there will be a few people--which is true with any drug--that will abuse it because of its availability.

aabby, according to various sources, you can take the MAP or the regular OC internally...just insert it like you would a tampon. This is normally for women who are suffering stomach problems at the time and don't want to throw up the Pill--it's not recommended on a regular basis.

I may be crazy here, but has anyone else heard of women taking several birth control pills the day after unprotected sex, etc. in order to produce the same results as the morning after pill? Maybe I'm thinking of something else. I don't know.
Not to bring my own past into this conversation but to answer your question: yes. My college's health center once gave me a prescription for a one month supply of birth control because they did not have the authority to prescribe the morning after pill. They told me to take like 4 days worth once after i got the prescription and then again 12 hrs later. Its not that I was permiscous either but it was just an accident where the normal form of birth control my boyfriend and i used failed us.

On another note, I must appluad all the ladies on this thread. Even though we all have different and varying opinions about this situation, I definitely feel there has been more respect for other peoples opinions than i have seen on other threads.

I just can't see someone forking over $30 on a regular basis for it -- most people don't have that kind of cash to throw around constantly. It adds up after awhile.

It's a tough call to make. I'm pro-choice (btw, I don't know anyone who is pro-abortion), and part of me says that this could be very helpful for women who find themselves in a difficult situation. However, I would hate to see it abused by someone who is just too lazy to use regular forms of birth control. But I guess those same people can abuse it now even though it's not over the counter. Like I said, tough call.

I totally agree. i think it would empower women so greatly becasue taking that pill is so much more simple than having an abortion. It would just give women another choice in birth control(not that I'm saying use this pill instead of other forms of birth control.) Also, in anything there are people who will be responsible and use meds as directed and others who will abuse the right.

Ditto this.

Many gynecologists estimate that making the morning-after pill over the counter will cut the number of abortions in this country in HALF.

That alone is enough reason for me to endorse it.

Hmmm at first I was against the whole OTC thing, but that is a good point sugar and spice.....I know one of my roommates got an abortion my sophomore year and I was just as depressed about it as she was. :(
