Any colony in which the members aren't willing to work hard will close. Building a colony into a chapter is a damned tough job that anyone can easily fail at. If the school's administration is not throwing obstacles in your way, that is helping!

The last school I heard of was Shorter College in Rome, Ga. wanting and asking Nationals to come on as there were only Locals there!

While a lot might depend on the size of the School and any affiliation, it depends on the local attitude.

Look at the Ole Miss. thread! The Old Line Soroities are so entrenched there taht it is almost impossible to have a new group start there!:(

The colony closed because the girls in it didn't meet the standards of their nationals. I don't exactly know what that means. ( i read it in an article in our student newspaper) i transferred here this fall and they closed this fall before recruitment. This particular colony might have been due to a lack of effort on the girls' part, but i can't say beyond the rumors i've heard which i don't know are true or not.
I don't think it was usi's fault or anything, but the administration's lack of support doesn't create a very greek friendly environment.

We do have some recent colonies which have chaptered (is that the right way to say it)? in 1998,?(gamma phi) and this december kappa alpha order so it is possible, and i hope we get another chance for a new colony

our overall community is small, 400 give or take a few greeks, in ten chapters at a school of 10,000 or so

it might not be neccessary to add more immediately, just grow the chapters we have. There is such an amazing potential for growth at this school, at this time but we get no support or recognition.

I think if the greek community as a whole here steps up, we could
accomplish a lot more.

I could be wrong becuase i haven't been greek very long, that the npc rule not to add more chapters untill all chapters are at total/quota, is stifling and stops a lot of potential growth. case in point ue. of course i am biased because i was a member of the interest group i wrote of.:D I do understand however, that it is VERY important not to cause an existing chapter to close-it's counterproductive to growth.

Elon University in NC is probably adding another sorority within the next two years. We need another one!

This is not an NPC rule. Campuses vote all the time to bring another group in when they have one or more groups not making quota and not at total. NPC groups colonize all the time at schools where this is not the case. It is a good rule of thumb, however, because it will hurt the smaller chapters to bring a new group in.

I would not be at all surprised to see us expand within the next couple of years again. (We've had 3 new sororities come on campus in the past three years!)

The only thing I would worry about is what will happen if the enrollment cap they're considering actually goes through. That could effect numbers a bit.

sorry, not rule, maybe ummm, trend or general leaning? would be better? I dunno, when i was involved in trying to go from a local interest group to an npc sorority none of the 4 npc sororities, would, or could from their nationals, vote for expansion because they weren't all at total, although none were very far, so i assumed this was some sort of policy oops

I would love to see Phi Sig at UF again. Phi Sig still owns land RIGHT NEXT TO the schoola dn sorority row. The only unfortunate thing is that they closed not too long ago, wasnt ten years ago because someone on the National Executive Council was part of the chapter in 96. Maybe UF should look into it considering they already own land!


And to address another comment, I know that my school in particular expanded at the wrong time. No sororoity was at total or even near it and DPhiE received their charter last year. Not to say anything bad about DPhiE (my best friend is one at another school) but it has not helped recruitment, because now there are just less girls for quota, if that makes sense... There were 3 sororities and 75 grls go through we each get about 25... now 4 sororities, and we only get 18 for example... It has not spiked an interest to get more girls to go through yet.

No problem DZJess. I think it just depends on the Panhellenic at your campus as to whether they are open to expansion when they have a group (or more than one) not a total and not making quota. I don't know if schools lean one way or another overall. PenguinTrax would know, I am sure.
Kudos to your campus for recognizing the damage that can be done by rushing to expand. My soapbox has always been that schools who do vote to bring in a new sorority when they have a struggling one are usually voting to close that struggling sorority. I have seen this happen more than once. If the group is finding it hard to survive it will be that much harder with a new kid on the block. I am sure there are instances where this is not the case and a new group stimulates the growth of the system for everyone, but I don't believe that is the norm.

That's really no excuse. My colony faced a similar situation at one point. Our recruitment numbers sucked and we weren't even growing from semester to semester. HQ had been hinting they were going to close us. So basically, myself and a few other guys got a table at the student union, put a bunch of Sigma Nu stuff on it and proceeded to recruit random people. After a few months of doing this, we netted 15 guys.

Instead of waiting around for things to happen (rush), we took ownership of the situation. We did what needed to be done and were successful. Looking back on it, I don't think it was that hard to see what was needed.

Yeah, it took personal sacrifice and tons of our time away for a few months. But a price must be paid for a colony to succeed.

NPC/administrative support is just not an excuse to fail. If they're not in your way, obstructing your success, I'd say that's about the best you're going to get in most places.

That is really great what you did but most groups (i.e. NPC) can only recruit during set times (either COB or Formal Recruitment), so though the group would like to be proactive all these groups can do is be active on campus and get to know the recruits.

The "C" in COB (COR) is for continuous... if an NPC chapter isn't at total they can recruit any time they want/need during the school year. Some campuses have rules that say that you can't recruit during "dead week", finals, etc... but as a general rule, NPC chapters not at total are free to take members at any time.

As someone who worked for awhile with the colony at USI, I can tell you that the campus's support was not at issue. The Greek Advisor was very helpful and always willing to help whenever we asked. The NPC was not very panhellenic, and when you have a new group come in, and another sorority just spreading some AWFUL rumors about it, you're going to have some trouble.

I personally don't think that USI can sustain another sorority at this time, unless the NPC really buys into another sorority joining their campus and embracing expansion. I know when I helped with recruitment there, the atmosphere amongst the sororities was tense to say the least, and many of the sorority women wouldn't even bother saying hello to each other, let alone wishing good luck. Without an NPC that supports each other, you can't hope to expand.

Bit of hijack but just wanted to say I am a member of an IG at GWU currently we have 12 or so fraternities, and 8 sororities. A couple frats are pretty dead however here is a Pike colony and our IG are recognized on campus. The greek community just had its largest rush numbers ever with largest number of pledges ever. Our school has around 10k people with 15% being in the greek community.
