I wish Cuyahoga County would have had their own power supply system. It just sucked!! :( I have running water now but it's cold. :(

So, I got home last night an 11:45pm. I left my work at about 4:30. It stunk! I walked down to Grand Central - closed. Walked to the exprerss bus stops to the Bronx (so the boyfriend could pick me up with the car) - packed buses and lines a block long. Decided I was just going to walk into the Bronx. Well, after a while I realized that I would be by myself with not a hint of light in the middle of the South Bronx. So, I stopped at another bus stop, befriended some guys about my dad's age who lived in the town next to mine, and we eventually walked our way to a bus that took us to the Bronx where the 5 of use piled into our Volvo S40 and my boyfriend dropped them all off. Thank goodness I wore my flat sandals. I was so close to wearing my three inch spiky heels!!!

And as for an onslaught of babies 9 months from now - the shape I was in when I got home, I was in NO mood to procreate!!!!! :D Heck, half the people on Long Island didn't get home until this morning!

I have to admit, though, it was fun...I didn't see a violent temper anywhere. Yayyy for New Yorkers who piss me off, but never cease to amaze me!!!

Could the power outage be the reason that some websites are down? Just curious!

Why is this power outage (W/ the Enron scandal) getting more tv coverage than the outage we had 2 yrs ago in California (basically blown off by Bush) when out state is -5 bigger than most states.

Again this ? isn't meant to belittle those still suffering or had suffereded power loss.

Glad to hear that some GC'rs are home safe ..

Thanks! Luckily, I was at my boyfriend's home at the time. A few minutes earlier, and I would have been stuck underground in the subway or in the elevator. The power went off at about 4:30 on Thursday and was restored about 24 hours later on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. My home in Queens had power restored at 6:30 AM Friday, but I wasn't there so I was electricity free until 4:30 this afternoon.

Like XOKathy, my mother had to walk a lot. From Wall Street to the Ferry to take her to Queens. She figured that would be the best way to get home. She walked down eleven flights of stairs, ten blocks, and seven more blocks. It took her from 5:00 until 8:15 to actually get on the ferry. She didn't get home until after 11:00. I spent several hours yesterday trying in vain to reach my family by telephone. I finally spoke to all of them by 5:00 today.

People were incredibly helpful during the blackout. Perfect strangers helped each other. I saw thousands of people walking across the 59th Street Bridge which connects Manhattan and Queens. There was a point when no cars were on the bridge, only people. Hundreds of people lined up for pizza at the only place open until they ran out of food. As far as I know, there were no riots or looting like in 1977. The worst part was walking up and down the stairs and the lack of water and telephone. I am very glad that the electricity has been restored.

I hope that lovelyivy, cash78mere, Rudey, James, aephialum, xo kathy and the rest of the GCers affected are safe and sound. Thanks for the kind words and best wishes especially ZTAMich and lifesaver. :)

How many of you were without water??

I had running water all night. Thank god too. By the time I realized I should probably go out and get water and maybe some batteries it was too dark and the stores were closed. Luckily I found a few bottles of water and some candles. I tried to go to my bank this morning and it was closed. Although several others ones on the same block were open.

This is my guess:
Probably because of the fact that it was, what, like 5 states and part of Canada? I mean, I guess you figure maybe one state would go out, but all those and another country? They say about 50 million people were out. That's more than California, right? And of course the NYC aspect where we are so totally dependant on public transportation that we had 8 million people basically milling about on this island trying to get home, and that is something you can put on TV for a "wow" factor, ya know? :rolleyes:

Also, and pardon my ignorance on this one, but didn't we kind of know that California would have blackouts? Like, didn't they say they would have to have rolling ones to keep the power supply halfway normal? If that was the case, then I guess this being such a WTF no one knows how or why situation is a bit stranger?

BTW, I'm not saying you Cali should have been blown off at all! I'm just tossing out an idea for why the news coverage and attention might be different in this instance.

i would have cried if i got home from hell last night and could not have taken a shower.

i was SOOOO gross cause of all the running around and being crazy busy :(

so gross that i even greeted a table, asked them how they were and then they said fine and asked how i was and i said "oh just fabulous, but i am dying to take a shower cause i am gross"
