4-1-1 ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 4, 2003
Guess who? I had a chance to see an R&B legend recently. I was backstage and I saw him holding a young infant. I thought how nice…he must be holding his grandchild. NOT! He was holding his latest child. This R&B legend is over 50 and is very married to a woman his age. The baby’s momma is a younger woman. The R&B legend has a famous son who is also a singer. Sometimes you can get on the “Love Train” one time too many. I know a lot of people may think I’m a “backstabber” for revealing this story, but hey…the truth is bound to come out. (Afrochic's sidenote: Ugh Eddie Levert  ) The “Velvet Teddy Bear” is showing his claws. American Idol winner Ruben Studdard is suing the makers of the popular 205 Jerseys. During his run on the show Ruben would wear the shirts and they became an instant fashion hit. The makers of the Jerseys made 2 million dollars off the shirts and now Ruben wants his cut because he feels he was exploited and used. In a statement Ruben said they capitalized on his success without giving him any money. Gladys Knight dubbed him the “Velvet Bear” but now we know that Ruben is not as soft as people think. Mary J. Blige opens up in the new issue of Honey Magazine. Mary has a new LP coming out later this month and she says her unhappy childhood led to problems with drinking and abusing drugs. Mary says she had low self-esteem, but now her life has changed. Mary is engaged to be married to a record producer. Mary says her man loves her for her and she has never been happier. Jackson family patriarch Joe Jackson recently celebrated his 75th birthday. The Jackson children came together at Michael’s Neverland Ranch to help Papa Joe celebrate, but the party turned out to be a flop. Michael hid from the guests, the Jackson children didn’t mingle with anyone, and too many people showed up. Michael told his dad, “You can invite 400 people…” but 1000 people showed up. Joe was walking around looking lost and confused and they ran out of food. People were standing around hungry, thirsty and mad. A lot of people were walking around eating candy bars. Some of the people who did show up include some former stars of the 80’s Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer and actor Corey Feldman. Ray Charles has been ordered by his doctors to rest. Ray is having a problem with his hip and his tour has been postponed until next month. Singer Jaheim says he wants to start an acting career. The popular crooner who is topping the charts with “Put That Woman First,” says he has been looking at some scripts. Jaheim is currently working on a new LP and he is running his bath accessories company. The company is named Julies Dream after his late mother. Jaheim says after a hard day, his mom would relax in the tub with her favorite bath salts. You can check out his products online at Juliesdream.com |
I thought the Jackson family were Jehovah Witnesses. I know the kids have kind of distanced themselves, but I thought the mother and father still would have had ties to the religion. Obviously not, they celebrated the man's birthday.
Dayum, Eddie! :o |

Mike Tyson Bankrupt (from Yahoo.com)
According to his attorney, Mike Tyson has filed for bankruptcy in Manhattan.
"As a professional fighter, who relied on others to manage his affairs, he discovered that his debts far exceeded his assets," said Tyson attorney Debra Grassgreen. "Now, he has taken the lead in bringing order to his financial affairs." It has also been reported that Tyson puts part of the blame for his dwindling assets - once estimated at $300 million - on promoter Don King. A $100 million lawsuit is pending against King claiming that Tyson was cheated out of millions of dollars at the hands of the promoter. Also adding to the boxing star's financial woes are legal fees from 1995 to 1997 that have been reported to amount to $9 million and his lavish spending habits which include a reported $410,000 on a birthday party, $65,000 on limousine service, and $8,100 toward the care of his pet tigers. |

Halle Berry Eager To Dig Her Claws Into 'Catwoman'
The upcoming "Catwoman" flick will likely do away with much of the established lore from the DC comic books and the 1992 blockbuster "Batman Returns." And as far as Halle Berry is concerned, that's just purrfect.
Having completed the supernatural mystery "Gothika", Berry is bubbling with excitement to dig her claws into the role made famous by Michelle Pfeiffer and 1960s "Batman" TV actresses Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether and Eartha Kitt. "I am excited about it," the Oscar-winning actress said recently. "I just finished 'Gothika,' so now my next job is to sort of dive into it and figure out who I will be as Catwoman. And what can I bring to it that all of the other great ladies of the past maybe forgot to bring? And I hope I'll find something." Catwoman first appeared in the "Batman" comics back in 1940 and has since appeared in her own comic titles, as well as various "Batman"-related cartoons, TV shows and movies. A costumed jewel thief with the alter-ego of Selina Kyle, Catwoman has been both a nemesis and love interest for the Batcave-dwelling superhero. The current script for the upcoming flick, which Berry took on after scheduling conflicts caused Ashley Judd ("A Time to Kill") to end her long association with the years-in-development project, reportedly involves a new Catwoman named Patience Price who is granted cat-like powers. Batman is not expected to appear. With a tentative July 2004 release date, "Catwoman" seems likely to be the first of the many in-development Batman projects to actually make it into theaters. The passionate reception a fan film called "Batman: Dead End" — in which the Dark Knight battled the Joker, a "Predator" and "Aliens" from the films of the same names — received at the San Diego Comicon convention this year was evidence that demand still exists for "Batman" movies. Darren Aronofsky ("Requiem for a Dream") has expressed interest in adapting comic auteur Frank Miller's classic "Batman: Year One" for the big screen, though director Christopher Nolan ("Memento") is the latest name that's been attached to the relaunch of the "Batman" franchise (see "Next Batman Movie In Hands of 'Memento' Director"). The once highly profitable series that began with Tim Burton's 1989 "Batman" stalled after fans and critics panned Joel Schumacher's "Batman and Robin," which featured George Clooney in the cape and cowl. A proposed "Batman Vs. Superman" flick was placed on the backburner after Warner Bros. decided to move first on separate flicks starring the iconic characters instead (see "Batman And Superman Have To Wait In Line Behind Greek, Trojan Warriors"). "Catwoman," with visual-effects-supervisor-turned-director Pitof at the helm, is scheduled to begin production at the end of next month. A source close to Berry said that start date could change, as the actress is still recovering from an arm injury she sustained while making "Gothika." —Ryan J. Downey |
I'm not mad at you, Halle. I just hope it's worth seeing.

PRAS LETS LOOSE ON WYCLEF: Ex-Fugee tells all
Pras (Aug. 6, 2003) *In an interview with SOHH.com, Pras, a former member of the Grammy winning group, The Fugees, got some things off his chest regarding the group's possibility of reuniting. Fans have wanted to see The Fugees come together for some time, but the odds of that happening seem to be slim and none. It has long been rumored that the Lauryn/Wyclef affair fueled The Fugees breakup. And even though Wyclef, through his track "Where The Fugees At," has called for the group to reunite, Pras explained why he thinks that the situation seems to be bleak. "I mean anything can happen. Dude came back to repent, wash his sins, you know, be like I was wrong. But I don't see dude doing that. His ego is too big," Pras told the site. The group is still obligated to Columbia records for more albums, but Pras maintains his pessimism saying, "I doubt that they gon' get it." Pras confirms that Lauryn's "Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" was aimed at Wyclef in an attempt to get some things off of her chest about the relationship and where it left her. "She felt like being in this situation with this dude everything she thought she was or thought she knew about herself was really misinformed. It's a deep title man. It's a deep concept, deep album." On another note, Pras has his hands full with projects in the music industry as well as Hollywood. The rapper/actor's second solo LP, "Cold Fire," will drop later this year and he has three movie deals on the table. |

MISSY'S DEMEANOR NOT GOOD WITH MADONNA: Elliott denies disrespecting singer Missy Elliott (Aug. 6, 2003) *Missy Elliott is not happy with the allegations of disrespecting a fellow diva in the industry. Missy was recently accused of snubbing Madonna on the set of their new Gap commercial, reports Launch Radio. There were also rumors that Missy initially snubbed an invitation to Madonna's home for lunch and refused to get out of her limousine on the set after Madonna tapped on the window. Elliott issued a statement to New York Magazine this past Monday, explaining that "she wasn't herself " on the day of the shoot because of a personal crisis. She also stated that Madonna showed sincere concern for her. "Madonna came to me and asked what was wrong, and I told her in a roundabout way," said Elliott. "She called her spiritual adviser over the day of the shoot. He gave me, like, the red string, and he prayed for me. The rest of the shoot was fine. I would never disrespect her." Well, in the words of Gary Coleman, all we have to say is, "Missy, whatchoo really talkin' 'bout?" |

Daz has also signed on with So-So Def These are the transcripts of an interview with Daz. The interview was conducted by Hugo on July 28th, 2003. (courtesy of mvremix online) With the So-So Def/Aftermath beef well known - where do you stand? Daz : I stand with So-So Def. I heard about Xzibit bowing down to Suge and whatnot, and Snoop etc.'s problems with that... Daz: No, I'm talkin' about Xzibit got beat up the other day. Nah, I didn't hear about that Daz: Yeah, he was in a restaurant the other day. Some dudes came up to him and were like "Are you Xzibit?"
