Well, as Christin said earlier, we use the "unofficial" panda bear as our mascot--although we don't have a chapter mascot. The one we use is boyfriend *don't ask, I have no idea* which is a panda the chapter was given when we were chartered 2 years ago. Although, we do have family mascots. There is a cow, turtle, frog, monkey and mine is the angel and star.

Phi Mu sisters-does your national say why Phi Mu picked the lion when it was already being used on your campus by ADPi? And if the founders didn't care that it was already being used, why would a Phi Mu chapter today care and use a different mascot-like the ladybug. I just find this really interesting. My chapter only uses the international mascots & symbols. I think having a local mascot is cool if you have no (inter)national mascot, but if you have one, why would you change it? I'm just curious.
Hey, I'm a Phi Mu and I'd like to know this too! I've heard a few theories, but I can't find anything in my pledge manual to back it up, so I won't post about that. What I do know is that KDatUTC is right... the ladybug is used more in the southern chapters of Phi Mu as well. Now you've got me searching for info!

EDIT: A post from my very own advisor on this topic from the Phi Mu board, as far as the origin of the ladybug:

Quote:

Prior to the formal adoption (early to mid '80's I think) of the lion 'Sir Fidel' as our official mascot - chapters used both ladybugs and lions - however they wanted as their chapter mascots. I believe the ladybug came about as a spin-off of Phi Mu Ladies (i.e., ladybug) My chapter, Alpha Psi used the ladybug. Our school mascot was the lions, so we kind of got the best of both worlds. To this day - I'm still collecting ladybugs - even picked up a notebook at Wesleyan College this summer during convention that had a swarm of ladybugs on it. Shannon, Alpha Psi '78
So there you go... Phi Mu's mascot has not always been Sir Fidel, it was only adopted in the past 20 years. Ladybugs are used because the ladybug tradition in those chapters goes way beyond the origin of Sir Fidel.

I would imagine that some chapters are still pretty partial to ladybugs (including our advisor's home chapter). But my chapter only uses Sir Fidel :)
Forgive me for asking, but...do you have chapters in South Florida and do they use a different name for the mascot?

We have chapters at FSU, U of F, and FIU... but I have NO clue if they call our mascot by a different name. I'm having fun investigating though, so I think I'll browse around ;)

The plot thickens!

I just read the above website and it says that several years after ADPi was founded, they voted on the UNICORN as their mascot and symbol. Very interesting. I never knew that. Thought Phi Mu & ADPi always had the lion. I wonder when they changed it? Any Adelephians know? Anybody know when?

My chapter uses the national symbols too. We all love Hannah!
