ha, I've heard of almost all of these bands and I've been listening to half of them for years. ALL YOUR BANDS ARE BELONG TO ME.
Anyway, if you like hardcore I recommend: From Autumn to Ashes I just saw them last week with Everytime I Die, Funeral for a Friend, and Cave In. Super show. "Short Stories with Tragic Endings" is a good song to acclimate you to the rocking that is FATA. If you like it a bit more on the pop/punk tip I recommend: Coheed and Cambria The lead singer's voice is so darn cool and fun to sing along with. And if you like to straight up rock I recommend The Alkaline Trio You may have heard of them but that doesn't make them any less cool. |
Some personal faves:
2 Skinnee J's Chainsaw Kittens Pavement Ween |
I was looking back on the list and so far 3 of these artists/bands have come into the mainstream:
* Jason Mraz * Maroon5 * O.A.R Is that good or bad??? |
i'm really into male singer/songwriters right now...some good up & coming guys are:
matt nathanson sondre lerche marc broussard ari hest jj appleton also, if you're into bands like o.a.r. then you should check out: virginia coalition (VACO) guster brown couch |
one band that i used to love was earthsuit.
their music blended the sounds of maybe snow (remember that corny reggae rap sounding white artist) meets linkin park. an odd combination but somehow it worked. i still have their album but i dont really listen to it anymore. it would have been nice to see them get a lot of recognition when they first came out. they would have probably been a one hit wonder. they were semi popular in the christian music world. |
Speaking of OAR, Guster, et al...............
I miss Dispatch. Terribly. :( |
KSRC, how about the Puddle of Mud, new, or the Chessmen? Where were they from?
Show me your stuff big dog!:) |

Seemed like a nice dude, though - he came out into the crowd and had a beer after his set was done, and watched the main act. Anyway - I've checked out the majority of the bands on here that I hadn't heard of and fit my listening style - some good, some were awful, but that's another post. A couple more from me: Ben Lee - hard to describe, sort of flits between Jason Mraz-ish and David Gray-ish, but a little more mellow (says kate) Zero7 - The CD "Simple Things" should appeal to almost everyone's tastes somewhere along the way - atmospheric, somewhat electronic, but also vocal and introspective C-Rayz Walz - DefJux rap, not much more needs to be said The Raveonettes - The fact that the White Stripes are millionaires and these guys aren't is ridiculous - "Great Love Sound" might be the best song I've heard in years and an old favorite - The Slackers, a 'trad'-ska band from NYC transplanted to Tim Armstrong's Hellcat Records - lyrically amazing, and the reggae- and soul-tinged instrumentals transcend the generally niche-market sound of the genre |
You get any Immigrants yet, MF?

Dispatch! Man. Good stuff. Guster too, but I liked their early stuff better. And of course O.A.R. but I think you can pretty safely say they're mainstream now.
So I dated a guy this summer who was all into punk rock and so I recognize a lot of the names here.... although granted I'd only heard them in like the last 3 months. Still, though. Recognition is key. I think his favorite was the Minutemen, but Rancid and a couple others were well represented in his collection as well. Anyone heard of Well Built? I dated their drummer, Bill Ledbetter, when I was 19 (3 yrs ago.) I just ran into him again last Sunday.... apparently he joined WB since then and they won some Battle of the Bands thing and won a trip out to L.A. to record some stuff. Has ANYONE heard of them? Because I hadn't heard a thing... and now he's got a 9 mo. old son. Weird. I don't like thinking that people I've dated are starting to marry/reproduce. |

LBCT!!! This was my ex-boyfriend's favorite band in his freshman year of high school. Memories . . . I think they broke up, actually. I remember them saying that they were going to break up, and then I saw them playing a few shows about a year after that, and since then I haven't heard anything. Their website is here: http://www.lbct.com/ Another fun Wisconsin band is I Voted for Kodos -- I've been a fan since December '99, which feels like FOREVER ago. They're actually starting to get kind of big; they have fans all over the US and tons all over Wisconsin. I went to Summerfest this summer and counted three kids in IV4K shirts. They're really Reel Big Fish-esque, a little bit like Less Than Jake. They were travelling with Warped Tour for a while this summer. This thread is so funny to me -- I used to be big into punk and emo and indie about three or four years ago, so Kara's Flowers and At the Drive-In and Further Seems Forever were all familiar names. It's so weird to know that none of them exist (well, at least not as they were) anymore! |
Give your Wisconsin band votes to The Gufs you hippies...
Yes, they are still together for those of you that know of them. |
