If they bore you cashmere or what ever your name is the DO NOT READ THEM!!!!!

SisterInChrist 06-12-2000 01:20 AM

There are no schools CREATED for white students, so I don't believe we should refer to them as such.

This is just a very mild reply to that statement --only posted to educate... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
If you look back into the late 50's-early 60's, you would see that it took the SUPREME Court to MAKE the "prodominately" white schools even except blacks, or any other color for that matter (let us not forget the fact that even when the schools were integrated, blacks still couldn't live, eat or participate in any GLO activities on campus- but that's a whole other bag of snakes). So in essence the majority of every institution in this country were "made" for white people even down to the Constitution of the United States - why do you think some of the articles were amended? That's not just opinion, it's fact. One of the reasons why these "prodominately black" institutions were indeed constucted in the first place was so that black people could have the opportunity to be able to have a higher education, get a life insurance policy with lower rates, be able to participate in greek life, live in a friendly environment, be able to live and eat on campus... the list goes on and on. People naively think that blacks were always equal and intitled to all of these things, but in actuality they weren't. Now times are a little different (thank God) but still the history of this country's treatment towards blacks (and let's not forget the other cultures that Uncle Sam screwed over) is still too horrendous to just be forgotten about. So when you say that there weren't or aren't any "white" schools, you are sadly mistaken when the truth is that "white" people were the only ones intitled to go to those institutions.

pretty gyrl -- that was a very disrespectful comment that you made with regards to that young ladies family. its one thing to have your own opinion but its another thing to out right attack some one. alot of black people say that they don't like the fact that white families take in black children but the reality of the situation is that black families are not stepping up to the plate to take these children in. when someone steps in to care for someone else's child that action is to be commended regardless of color. just so you know you can be pro-black without being anti-white -think about it!!

Kurious Kitten 06-12-2000 08:45 AM

I'm only responding due to a pet peeve of mine.

History has illustrated that major movements and legal action had to happen to cause the segeration walls around many state and private institutions to fall and provide admidance to those long worthy that were not "white."

However, many other walls fell before this point and continue to fall. College educations were for the wealthy. Universities in the Americas initially were religious based to education new ministers.

If you look at the Histories of many of the 80-100+ sororities you'll find that many of their founders were the first women on campus. They united in a sisterhood because they were under represenatite, and found strength in numbers. We as females still have a long battle. We make up over 50% of the population in the United States, yet only recently have we even begun to gain respect at the University and professional levels. You still see women who acheive high position considered a bitch to get to the position rather then the skilled business tactics of her male peers. Remeber it was still in the last 20 years that women were considered going to college to get thier mrs. degrees rather then their B.A., B.S., M.S. M.B.A., etc degrees.

What this has to do with the topic. Well.. instead of quibbling over who's sorority is for who - We should cherish the histories of all those in the greek life that have gone before us in sacrifice. Respect each others organizations and beliefs. And provide oppertunities to the future to young women to choose which sistershoods give them the support and love they deserve regardless of their hertitage.

Easy in word, difficult in deed.

And still the unregistered have their voice... Did you not read the part on Uncle Sammy screwing over everbody that doesn't/did not look like him!!! Please, don't pick and choose what you respond to. We are talking about race relations - correct me if Im wrong - because I could be. Women's rights are just as important - but we are talking about race here. If you want to start your own vain about how Mr. America has screwed over everybody, you are more than welcome to. Nuff said.

WELL I THINK ALL OF YOU HAVE MADE VERY VALID POINTS. AND I AGREE WITH SEVERAL OF THEM. WITH ALL THAT HAS BEEN SAID, I CAN'T SEEM TO FORGET WHAT THEY(WHITE FOLKS, PARDON MY SLANG)HAVE DONE TO US IN THE PAST. I KNOW IT WASN'T DONE TO ANY OF US, BUT LETS LOOK AT THE FACTS SHALL WE!!!???
FOR CENURIES THEY HAVE TRIED TO BRING US DOWN,OR SHALL I SAY TEAR US DOWN. IT IS A VERY DIFFICULT JOB TRYING TO GET AHEAD, WHEN YOUR AFRICAN AMERICAN. AS SOON AS YOU GET IT, IT IS QUICKLY TAKEN AWAY FROM YOU.
IF YOU LOOK CARFULLY YOU CAN STILL SEE THE PLANTATION, THE SLAVE QUARTERS, THE MARCHES, THE BEATINGS,THEY MAY NOT BE OUR MOTHERS AND SONS HANGING FROM A NOOSE ON THE BIGGEST OAK TREE IN TOWN BUT THE KILLINGS AS WELL. INSTEAD WE HAVE POLICE OFFICERS SHOOTING OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS. AT THE FRONT DOOR OF THEIR OWN HOMES OR PULLING THEM OUT OF CARS BEFORE GIVING THEM A CHANCE TO UNDO THEIR SEATBELTS, OR TIEING A BROTHER TO THE BACK OF A TRUCK, AND DRAGGING HIM UNTIL HE IS DEAD.
AS AFRICAN AMERICANS WE ALL HAVE OUR THICK RELIGIOUS BACKGROUNDS AND I BELIEVE OUR ANCESTORS MADE THIS IMPORTANT IN THEIR LIVES, BECAUSE THEY NEEDED THE LORD AND IN SOME STRANGE WAY THEY KNEW THAT WE WOULD NEED TO CALL ON THE LORD IN THIS DAY AND TIME AS WELL.
WHITE FOLKS CAN NOT, AND I DO REPEAT CAN NOT RELATE TO WHAT WE AS A PEOPLE HAVE GONE THROUGH.
SOME OF THEM STILL THINK THAT BLACK FOLKS GROW TAILS AT NIGHT,( THIS IS A TRUE FACT BECAUSE A WOMAN TOLD ME OUT OF HER OWN MOUTH THAT WE DID,AND I CORRECTED HER ONE NIGHT BY GIVING HER MY ASS TO KISS, EXCUSE MY FRENCH).
HOW CAN I ACCEPT PEOPLE LIKE THIS, TO COME AND SHARE MY RICH ANCESTORY. I CAN NOT AND WILL NOT.
I WILL CONTINUE TO RECORD THE FAKE SMILES THAT THEY GIVE BECAUSE THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND. I WILL CONTINUE TO ACCEPT EVERYTHING THEY SAY THAT IS FALSE. AND I WILL CONTINUE TO SPEAK MY MIND AN CORRECT THEM WHEN THEY ARE WRONG.

WHITE FOLKS WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND ME AND I DON'T WANT TO UNDERSTAND THEM. IT IS NOT THAT I AN CLOSE MINDED, IT IS JUST THAT I KNOW WHAT I KNOW!!!

I DON'T CARE WHO THEY ARE, TRUE YOU MIGHT COME ACCROSS A COUPLE OF REAL NICE WHITE PEOPLE. SOME THAT YOU CALL YOUR BEST FRIENDS. BUT WHEN YOU BOTH DISAGREE, WHAT WILL HAPPEN??????? WHAT WILL HE OR SHE SAY TO THE REST OF HIS OR HER WHITE FRIENDS.

WE AS AFRICAN AMERICANS ARE ON A WHOLE DIFFERENT LEVEL THAN THEY ARE.

AND SOME OF YOU MIGHT NOT AGREE WITH ME, AND I AM SO SORRY FOR STEPPING REAL HARD ON SOME TOES,BUT THAT IS HOW I FEEL.

IF YOU GIVE IT TO THEM(WHITE PEOPLE) THEY WILL TAKE IT, REARANGE IT, AND CALL IT THIER OWN.

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU ALL, BUT AS AN AFRICAN AMERICAN I AM PROUD OF AN ANCESTRY AND I WILL FIGHT FOR WHAT IS MINE!!!!

LUV YOU ALL
GOD BLESS

I have learned so many good, positive things from others on this board, and I want to say up front that I respect your right to have your opinion. However, I feel I need to make a few points based on your comments:

1) I do not understand why anyone would use the word "THEY" to refer to an entire race of people. If there are specific people that a person knows then I understand to say "the members of XYZ sorority that I know tend to gossip" (or whatever). To use the word "THEY", however to refer to an entire group, race, etc. would be inappropriate since no one can possibly know the feelings or intentions of every person in that group. I think it is degrading to use the word "THEY" in this sense for any reason.

2) Yes I know the stats on police abuse to African-Americans, and I make no excuses for these officers. These officers are wrong in their actions. But you must not overlook the number of homicides commited by African-Americans involving other African-Americans. The statistics support this as the leading cause of death among young African-American males (as stated in another post by Kelli, as well as my own independent research in completing my graduate degree - see "Nurturing the African American Adolescent Male in the Family Context: A Public Health Responsibility" by L. Abramczyk and J.W. Ross, eds. for a start to topic reference). Again - I AM NOT making any excuse for police brutality against any human being. As for the brutal death of Mr. James Byrd, Jr., I believe that the people who committed this terrible crime should be put to death in the same manner as they did to him. This was a horrible act of violence that affected many people of all different races.

3) I recently began an in-depth investigation into influences of African-American participation in community events, and yes religion (most notably Christianity) was first and foremost in conversation during my groups. However, so many of the participants stated that their belief in God and Jesus helped them to be more active in community events (even when they felt not welcomed) because they felt a strong need to relay that Jesus taught His people to love everyone (i.e., "Love thy neighbor as thy self.") I'm NOT trying to preach or tell people what the Bible is saying - I AM SAYING THAT THIS IS BASED ON ACTUAL RESEARCH THAT I CONDUCTED VIA FOCUS-GROUPS. This research is currently under review for publication, and I'll be glad to relay the journal information when it is published.

4) I have never heard about black people growing tails at night, but reading this statement really shows the ignorance of this woman. However, it was one woman and just because she said that doesn't make it true (just think - there are actually people out there today that think OJ is innocent!) I think if you told her to kiss your butt then maybe she would realize how offensive she was.

5) It is your right to refuse to accept people "like this" as you stated. However, please realize, in my opinion, that it is a 2 way street and that it is a double standard to say that it makes you mad at "whites" for not accepting "blacks," but then you refuse to accept whites.

6) Yes I am white, and my 2 dearest friends are black - and YES we do disagree on some issues such as abortion. Does this mean as soon as I'm out of sight that I'm calling them bad names? NO - It means to me that these people are MY FRIENDS and that even if we disagree, I will honor and respect their feelings, and I expect the same from them. If someone is not like this, they cannot call themself a true friend. In fact, one of these friends, is turning 50 and she tells me all about being the first black at her school and the way she was treated by many of the white students. And guess what - I use many of her stories to relate to my students and research participants in order to generate research on the topic of African-American issues. It is a wonderful way to help educate me so that I can help educate others. Will I EVER be able to feel her shame and humiliation during those years at school - absolutely NOT! But can I learn from her - DEFINITELY! And this is what is important - if we don't learn from history, it will repeat itself.

7) Again, let me repeat that I DO RESPECT YOUR RIGHT TO YOUR OPINION. I have written some thoughts that I have based on the opinions that you have posted. I have been researching African-American issues for three years and I have LEARNED SO MUCH! I know that I will never know what it is like to walk in the shoes of someone who is African-American, Hispanic, Asian, etc. But I do know that by educating myself, I can help educate others.

One more time - I respect the right of everyone to have their opinion. I hope that I have not portrayed negativity in this (LONG) post, but if so, please just let me know and I'll review it. I do enjoy being able to learn from each of you and wish everyone out there happiness in each endeavor!

Kurious Kitten 06-13-2000 11:55 PM

SisterinChrist,

I'm assuming you are refering to me as the unregister-ed. (I have remained unregistered for my own reasons.)

Additional comments here are only for clarification. This discussion by topic is about white women joining historically black sororities. Many comments have been made along the lines of "Person X can't understand me, person y, because of difference alpha." In the case of this discussion it is a matter of color. The use of "my" and "your" is used profusely. Through the history of women's fraternal organizations - sororites - be they based on service, on culture, on education, or any combination - we need to find a common ground and work together. My statements were to establish while non-blacks may not have the same prespective as a black on hardships, careers, etc. some of us have parallelling prespectives that substituting in a different alpha - while it may result in a completley different out come - the feelings inside can be very similiar. We are human.

The other point: Each women that comes through the doors of the colleges across the united states, deseserves the right to say "XYZ sorority holds the ideas, purpose, service, and goals that I believe in. I would like to pursue them for membership." I'm not saying we should accept everyone who comes to our door. But they deserve consideration regardless of what they look like.

Kurious Kitten,

The purpose of my reply was to educate a certain individual about the "white" schools v. "black" schools vain that this conversation had taken. I didn't give my opinion as to if I do, or if I do not, believe that "white" women should join predominately black sororities in the post that you so graciously responded to. So before jumping down my back, make sure you read what I was trying to say and the point that I hope that I brought across. Now if you are asking me what I think, I choose to keep such opinions to myself-just like you choose to stay unregistered. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

LOOK, THAT WAS HOW I FELT ABOUT THE SITUATION,AND IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT THEN I AM SORRY FOR YOU.

I VALUE MY OPINION EVEN IF YOU DON'T. I KNOW THAT SOME OTHERS CAN RELATE TO WHAT I AM SAYING , SO THEY UNDERSTAND. I WOULDN'T EXSPECT YOU TOO.

I DO NOT KNOW YOU, PANDABEAR AND YOU DO NOT KNOW ME.

I AM NOT AGAINST CAUCASIONS, BUT I AM AGAINST THEM JOINING BGLO.

CAUCASIONS HAVE THERE OWN SORORITIES AND I FEEL THEY SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM BGLO.

AS YOU PLAINLY PIONTED OUT, THAT YOU DID NOT RESPECT MY OPINION, SO THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO YOU, PANDABEAR http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

THIS IS A FORUM, AND YOU MIGHT NOT CARE ABOUT WHAT I HAVE TO SAY BUT PEOPLE, OTHER THAN YOURSELF, JUST MIGHT.

Please show me where I pointed out that I do not respect your opinion. I was simply stating my side of the coin. I guess because we disagree on some issues that you don't want to hear another side. I never stated that you were against caucasians (just that I didn't like the way any entire group of people are referred to as "They"). If I didn't care what you had to say, I wouldn't have responded with my opinion. You haven't discussed one single point that I made in my reply. It appears as though you simply want to make your opinion stated, but then not want anyone to reply to it. If you have a problem with something I said, you should respond to the point in question...not send insults out like not understanding you so that I shouldn't bother reading it. I guess I was the one stepping on toes because I thought we could intelligently discuss the points made! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

QUEEN 06-14-2000 02:43 PM

PANDABEAR ,
YOU HAVE YOUR OPINION AND I HAVE MINE. IF I OFFENDED YOU, I DIDN'T INTEND TO. WHEN THE RACE CARD IS DELT, I JUST SPEAK MY MIND. I APPRECIATE ALL THE INFORMATION THAT YOU HAVE PROVIDED, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
IT WAS TOLD TO ME, THAT IT IS HEALTHY TO GET YOUR FEATHERS RUFFLED FROM TIME TO TIME.
AND MINE ALWAYS GETS RUFFLED WHEN THE RACE CARD GETS DELT.
BUT..... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/redface.gif
PLEASE DO NOT THINK YOU PUT ME IN MY PLACE BECAUSE , YOU DIDN'T. I STILL FEEL THE WAY THAT I DO, AND YOU CAN'T CHANGE A PERSON OVER NIGHT!!!!

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS THIS MATTER FURTHER PLEASE FEEL FREE TO E-MAIL ME.

GOD BLESS
