You also seem to be missing the distinction between sisters and pledges here. Both people involved in the incident are pledges, not yet initiated members of Sigma. Every single sorority and fraternity on this board has given a bid to someone who turned out to be a nut case. They usually weren't initiated. Hopefully that is the case here. BUT AS LONG AS MTV DOES THE EDITING WITH A HEDGE CLIPPERS, WE'LL NEVER KNOW. |

I couldn't agree with you more. |
i second the *applause*
The Sigma sisters i like, some of the pledges i have issues with. But regardless, the organization brought this upon themselves. Willingly putting yourself in the spotlight on a MTV pseudo-reality tv show makes you a public figure. They made the choice, and they do have to deal with the consequences. Such as some of the disapproving opinions on here. But we're all allowed to have our own opinions. And unless you've walked in another GCers shoes, you have no right to call names or be as harsh as i've seen some people be. |
. . . but none of us have ever walked in the Sigmas shoes, so why should we be judging them?
I don't think that none of us should be allowed to have opinions. I don't think that none of us should be allowed to express those opinions. I do, however, think that we should all be able to express those opinions without insulting anyone (Sigmas or otherwise), judging them harshly, etc. This goes for people on both sides of this argument. |
Is anyone still watching this show? I haven't in a while. It's not that interesting to me.

The reason I think that NPC sororities turned down the chance to do "Sorority Life" is simple: In our new member program, we tell our nm that they are not allowed to drink in their letters. Why? Because if tomorrow night I decided to get drunk in one of my DZ shirts and strip at the Pike house, the next day, word around the water cooler will not be "Man! Blaire stripped for us last night! Can you believe it?!"...instead, it would go something like this "Man! Some Delta Zeta stripped last night! Can you believe it?!" Then, unfortunalty, my organization will carry that stigma for years to come. Thats sorta what I think is going on here. We are generalizing Sigma into one group, instead of looking at the individual. If my chapter had signed up for this, you'd better believe that things would get said or done that I would NEVER want the nation to see. It's natural, really. All organizations have their ups and downs.
I do not condone slapping. It has NEVER occured in my sorority. However, I have been slapped before. It would have been mortifying if the whole world saw me get slapped accross my face by one of my best friends (FYI...we are no longer friends). Like I've said before, I feel sorry for these girls...but in a way they should have seen it coming. I have also never hidden behind my letters; however, I will say that sometimes I keep my thoughts to myself in order to maintain DZs rep. (Not saying that everyone should do that; its just my way of doing things! So please, do not put words in my mouth). I honestly think that Sigma AEPI had the right intentions and I hope in the long run that this helps them and does not hurt them. Because, who knows? In a different place and time, I could have been one of them. Much Greek love, Blaire |

I am sorry but for those of you that "have had it" then don't read these posts anymore. The show is hilarious and hellz yea I and all other Greek people as well as non-greek people will continue to laugh at it as well as the stupid things the girls do (which are def dumb and impossible to ignore). Plus, yes everyone has to come to the realization that they HAVE NEGATIVELY AFFECTED THE WAY GREEKS ARE PRECEIVED!! Not that our rep was so much better before, but we were getting better. Now with these people doing this show (yea the producer of the show was Greek and he wanted to show positive Greek like...RIIIIIGHT) they have ruined everything. At my job, I work with a lot of different interns from all sorts of different schools. I am the only one who is Greek and after watching the show I think they almost think that I am like that. One of my co-workers who knows me really well is like your nothing like that I can't believe your in a sorority...and I am like ITS NOTHING LIKE THAT RETARTED SHOW! So to all of you guys who are like "stop making fun of them" wake up and smell the coffee that they have added EVEN MORE to people's negative preception of Greeks. That is the reason why we vent on the boards because we are fed up and mad that when fall rush comes around, numbers may drop. Yes no one is perfect but they were the only ones to go and air their imperfections on tv.

Also, I say that if you are worried about losing potential members who have been influenced by an MTV show...then maybe you need to rethink who you recruit. |

and who cares if some sororities have religious backgrounds? we are NOT allowed to discriminate based on religion. period. and like AXOAlum said...I ain't no chicken. |

i saw that swimsuit edition...you looked pretty damn good!:D |
Okay, here is my perception from this whole thing. Some of you all are crossing your arms leaning back and saying, "see there? Now look what they have done! We TOLD THEM SO!" Blaming MTV and blaming Sigma and blaming the pledges and blaming EVERYONE ELSE is really a poor cover-up for your own insecurities. Why not just eradicate the stereotype yourself instead of whining about it? Furthermore, why even worry about it at all? If the stereotype doesn't apply to you then what is the big deal??? If it does apply to you, then trying to shift the blame to MTV, Sigma, etc. is a waste of time when you could be trying to improve yourself/your org.
I know the major issue is that it will harm recruitment numbers. How many of you are actually disappointed that you could be losing potential members who think that MTV shows are REAL? I should hope that no one is scrambling to recruit this demographic. Bottom line...worry less about what others think, and more about yourself. That way you can SHOW rather than TELL that your org defies the stereotypes. |

By the way....after the comment that someone made about what my letters say about me and my organization....now WHY is it that *SOME* people are in hiding and WON'T publish what organization they belong to....hmmm....like I said - I'm not hiding anything. Cashmere - thanks sister!! Glad to know that WE BOTH KNOW THE MEANING OF SISTERHOOD!! Now come over here and let me smack you so we can throw our own pity party!!! ;) Thank you Easter Bunny - BAAK BAAK! ChiOJenn78 - thanks for the applause -- you want a good smack too so that you can be part of the "Black and Blue" sisters? ;) Damasa - that was TOO DAMN FUNNY :D |
I'm with you all the way AXO Alum
