Mattumassd- Dartmouth, MA has a population of about 25-40 African-Americans, in a town of about 31,000 residents. http://www.town.dartmouth.ma.us/
There were 4 African-American students at Dartmouth High School with me, and probably about a handful more dispersed throughout the elementary and middle school level. New Bedford High School though, (our rivals, and neighbor to the east) is a different story. I believe their student population is 40-45% African-American.

So obviously, Dartmouth isn't a very diverse community. The southern part of town can get pretty snobby and uppity with their yachts and expensive cars. Houses in the "lower class" parts of town don't usually sell for less than $200,000, if that gives you a clue about how low "lower class" really is. The thing is, houses in Padnaram (the historic harbor village) can run anywhere from $750,000 to well into the millions if you want to live in an exclusive community with waterfront property, and your own personal dock/mooring. Silly if you ask me!

Michael J. Fox, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Geraldo Riveira have houses in Nonquitt...(one of those affluent, exclusive communitites  )

I find dartmouth to be very commericialized, but the only part I really see is route 6.

funny story on ivory, kind of off-track, but not so much.

picture it: we're sitting in a lil bar in chatty, her friend jenny just had her foot sliced open when some idiot dropped a beer bottle, and we're chillin. this italian dude comes over and kinda chats with the ivory...she's lookin good, no one is surprised....but THEN he asks, "so, what are you?" quickly, my head drops, my eyes close, and i wait for the bell and for ivory to come out swingin. she simply looks at him, states plainly, "i am american." then he's like, "nono...like, where are you from?" again, "i am american." then he's like, "NOno, your background...where are your people from?" ivory, "i live in tennessee...in america....i am american." finally, he gets the picture and then says, "you korean?".....i DIED. lol....so funny!

guy was hot, though, at least, even if he was a lil dense....

ok, done with hijack.....when i was in AL, my high school had MAYBE 25 non-whites in it. it was the county school.....so mainly just red-necks and preps. african americans went to the other 10 high schools in the city. when i moved in ky, my high school was a BILLION times more diverse and at first i was like, "how weird" b/c i was young and just oblivious to how unintentionally sheltered i had been, but then i was like, "thank God....." felt like my eyes had been opened for the first time. :)

as long as you're not a racist anywhere you are, i don't think it matters where you live. whether an all-white neighborhood or someplace more diversified....be open to all people and all cultures, whether in your home or out. :)

Hey, you know I HATE HATE HATE when guys ask me what I am when they are trying to hit on me. It pisses me the phuck off. I am American, they don't need to state the obviousness of my Asian background when they are trying to get to know me. Damn, you boys!! Be original and get some DAMN game!!

Uh, sorry for my HIJACK!! :)

Matt,
I lived in RI for 6 years and, except for when school was in session, there weren't that many minorities.

Boston does have a few pockets of racial diversity sprinkled here and there, but New England isn't really that diverse in terms of color, but it is diverse in terms of ethnicities! Portuguese, Italian, Irish, Jewish, Greek...It's a beautiful thing! I MISS NEW ENGLAND!

The Chicago Metro area seems to be becoming more diverse

"Woodstock Institute has released a new report that examines the extent to which neighborhoods in the Chicago metropolitan area achieved and maintained significant levels of income and racial diversity in home buying during the 1990s"

Route 6 sucks. Try driving out to Division Rd, or the High Hill Farm and Vineyards! Or even Padnaram and Apponequet Beach! Heck- try to find the new high school! (Corner of Bakerville and Russells Mills Road...)

I think the cow population of Dartmouth is more diverse than it's people...you have to drive by a farm in every direction off route 6.
