A) I'm sure I know and care about my organization and sisters just as much, if not more, and there was no hazing involved.

B) This thread is not about your opinions of how "great" hazing is...it's about the MTV show. If you want to discuss it further, post about it in the Chapter Operations or Risk Managment forum.

End of discussion.

ZTA MIami....you are obviously the ignorant one....most sororities do haze....and I know this because every sorority at my school does and all of my friends in different sororities from other schools do also...and I am part of a big national sorority where I know that the other chapters do also....everyone just lies to the national office....and makes up a fake plege program. I dont know how things are run in Miami....maybe you guys have beach parties and go tanning together during pledging...but i guarantee you that you do not have more respect for your sorority or closer bonds than I do. What you call hazing is not what i call hazing...i dont feel that i was abused...i was taught respect, courage, and pride in my sorority through my pledging experience...unlike you. I honestly feel sorry for you that you didnt even get a chance to earn your letters.

And no....this is not a hazing forum....but hazing was brought up many times in this forum because of the MTV show so just deal witgh it.

Lucky, you are obviously the type of person that hazing was created for. I am not shocked that you think it is okay. It seems that in your opinion, eveyone else doing it makes it right. That is probably why you joined your sorority, because everyone else did. Maybe you are right, maybe you do love your sorority more than the people commenting here. Or is that just what everyone else says?

Okay, back on the subject...I saw a new commercial today and this one was actually more positive. It was clips of the girls goofing around (pillow fights, dancing around in their pajamas, signing into hairbrushes, talking, hugging). I was glad to see Candace and Jessica hanging out in the commercial; hopefully, the "sixth roommate" stigma will dissolve over the next few episodes.

just a note on hazing from a former post of mine:

But I can attest to Physcological Manipulation experiments, and various experiments in general behavioral physchology that Hazing establishes a cognitively dissonant belief that the final goal is so much greater than it otherwise would have been due entirely to the act of hazing. It's not the getting beaten part, or does it even have to be anything physical, as long as getting through it is VERY VERY difficult.

Very basic examples are
you get a brand new car for free or
you save your money working for 5 years to get one not as good

which one do you take better care of....the one you bought, because you convince yourself it's better because you just really put yourself out a lot to even get it, and even if before you knew it wasn't better, that perspective shifts and you now believe the one you bought was better.....the theory of cognitive dissonance as it backs the validity of his statement.

However, hazing also demoralizes basic principles concerning my founding, and I imagine the founding of most all other fraternities/sororities. It cannot create true brotherhood because no one can want to see there brother in agony so much that he will put him there himself. It creates this strong brotherhood, but as the theory of CD implies, it creates it on false pretenses. You convince yourself you and your brothers are tight, because if you're not...then why the hell did you endure the pain. A startling reality before your eyes! This isn't me talking, so don't take it too personal, it's the theory of cognitive dissonance against you hazers and hazees. So quit beating people..this isn't eye fr an eye...it's your brothers! would you hit your real brother or father to make him respect you more? hehe, probably not!

Hazing creates a dissonance that makes you think you really deserve it and its great because you got hazed. haha. Tricks on you! You now feel that everyone should be hazed to bond. I'm sorry for what is evidently you're entire campus, that your chapter participation in ritual does not do that for you. It may prove that you might wish to reevaluate your ethics. Would you haze your best friend in high school to get closer to her? That'd be a bit strange, wouldn't it.

And not to insult your intelligence (entirely), but let me see if I'm getting this point of yours correct. Because some orgs don't haze, anyone with money can get in, yet if your hazed, only the best of the best get in? Is this so? So, the people who let themselves be hazed, and take your shit for the first full semester in school which is when more than ever they need to be learning and growing are the ones who are going to go out and be productive members of society and for your GLO. And it's the (speaking generally) meat heads who love/don't mind getting hazed, so that's what GLO's eventually fill with, and creates the stereotypes we've got, add perpetuates them....you are truly blind.

My thoughts are scattered now, I will try to reply less frustrated later, but to end...

Hazing is about creating friendships on psychologically-inspired false pretenses. I'd say think about that, but you're predispositioned against it already. haha. I'm sorry.

Re: You didn't earn anything

Hmmm....let's see. Have a group of folks act like I'm the greatest thing since sliced bread, then treat me like shit by making me clean their toilets, run their errands, not allowing me sleep or bathing and make me look like an ass...all to do a complete 180 in 6-8 weeks when pledging is over...yeah, that's such a special bond!!! Sign me up!

XiLovin 07-03-2002 03:25 PM

Ha! Well put.

UMgirl 07-03-2002 07:09 PM

First, I dont think the Rock thing was hazing. To me its one of the public rituals and just b/c something is mandatory doesnt mean its hazing IMHO. If thats the case Initiations could be considered hazing.

HOWEVER, I wasnt hazed and I just like many other GCer's earned our letters and wear them proud.

No offense but if I have to be beat, or some other crap just to join something, its not worth my time and I have less respect for those people who are dishing it out. I will admitt though that somethings that are considered hazing are funny (i.e being tarred with rasberry sauce and feathers and rolling around in it) and I would probably do it just for laughs. Then there is iother hazing that is just stupid (ie walking to class backwards  and not being able to talk to anyone at a party and having to stand against the wall the whole night. I know someone who had to do these things).

So everyone in the world is just like you and people you know! You ::KNOW:: that just because all the greeks you know have been hazed that most other greeks are too. Just like they ::KNEW:: the world was flat....right.....sounds like you're ignorance at it's finest!

And without knowing me you know this too! Wow, you just know everything don't you! Just because I wasn't physically/mentally/emotionally abused by people that are some of my best friends there's no way that I could have a close bond or respect my sorority. What was I thinking! Just because you said it it must be true since you know seem to know everything!

         :

nauadpi 07-04-2002 03:43 AM

I have to add my two cents in here. I know atleast in my chapter there is no hazing. We treat our new members better than anything else. The go first for everything, and as we always put it are treated like princesses. As for the concept that hazing could make your bonds better, that is just funny. Before I was a member, there were some insdences on hazing, and nationals came in and pulled a bunch of pins for it and many girls left the chapter. Now how in the world can this be said to be promoting the sisterhood of the sorority and making you earn anything. People lost more out of the situation then anything else.

tkepunx 07-05-2002 11:47 PM

Hi. I actually go to UC Davis, and I dont think the rocks are hazing. It's looked upon as something prideful to do by most sororitys and fraternitys. I mean, I know actives in my chapter that have done it by themselves, without any pledges. Besides, doing the rocks once with that many girls is pretty easy. I have heard of groups on campus that do it multiple times in the pledge quarter, with a lot fewer pledges.

Is this for real?

Is this a real sorority? It's ridiculous. It is so fake and makes all sorority girls look bad.

Jen

tkepunx 07-06-2002 09:43 PM

Yeah, it is a real sorority. I haven't been active in my fraternity that long, so I haven't met many of them. But from what I hear, MTV is really making it seem like some of the girls on the show are really mean, or really nice, etc.

the new MTV commercials

Has anyone seen the new "Sorority Life" commercials that show the pledge house girls having (obviously staged) pillowfights, etc? I happened to see it tonight.... it's terrible. They're trying to make it look like the show is interesting, I guess.
