Dont know where this comes from, but I cant stand when soemone doesnt pronounce "h" in a word. Its Houston (hews-ton) NOT (yous-ton). UGGG! what are you so cool and better than us you can make up your own ruls about our language? You cant go around making up your own language rules! If the letter is there, and most everyone else is pronouncing it SO SHOULD you. UGH

LOL - no youre thinking Minnesota/the Dakotas/Idaho - theyre on their own - us midwesterners don't claim them as part of us :D

THANK YOU I HAWK!!!!!!:)

We in the Mid Portion of the US do not have an accent, it is all of you Damn Yankees and Southern Gentlemen and Southern Belles who have honey coming accross your lips!

I always wated to Pawk My Ca In Havad Yad!

Mid States DO NOT include AR-Kansas! They have their own lingo that the family can understand!:D

DZTUBAGIRL 05-08-2002 06:31 PM

Well I think that pop is the most annoying word ever!! I hate it here in Kentucky where that is all people say!! I call it coke, even thought I might be talking about pepsi, I just call it all coke. I might not be from the "north" but I am from Maryland and I certainly don't consider myself a southerner...you can understand what I say. I might talk a little fast but atleast you can understand me.

Sorry to offend any southerners, one thing I have to say is that the south has the nicest people I have met in a while.

dzrose93,
I agree that the roads aren't built for snow or ice or anything like that...but the people driving in Dallas did not know how to drive in that kind of weather. You would think that seeing snow in Texas would make the drivers slow down to at least the speed limit (if not slower!) but it didn't...and that's why most of the accidents happened!

dzsaigirl,
I do say y'all a lot don't I?! But that has nothing to do with me living in the South.....I've been saying it since I was in high school! I like y'all...it's a great word!!!!:D:D

BTW...I love Southern accents! I think they're great!:D:D

Juan

EXACTLY!!!!

My family is from NY...that's how we refer to the aforementioned.:D

OK I just HAVE to say something here, this is so interesting to hear what we all think of each other's states. Speaking as a californian (San Francisco.. NOT LA) .. I have to say EVERYWHERE in California it's SODA. I've had quite extensive conversations on the subject with my friends from out of state. I know you all from other places have stereotypes about california... but not all of us are shallow, wanna be actresses... :D (especially here in San Fran) and I must say... that almost EVERYONE has an accent to me.. midwest... northeast.. southern... whatever. Of course, I know most of you could probably tell I'm from Cali if you talked to me on the phone... :D

SoCalGirl 05-09-2002 01:43 AM

I pretty much agree w/ Glitter. In Cali it's never ever called Pop unless your talking about Music! As far as accents go, I love Southern accents, cringe at the Fargo type accents, and always tease my friends w/ the NorCal accents. Yes! Southern and Norhtern Cali have different accents. :)

This article was hilarious! My roomate is from Illinois... I think its the funniest thing in the world when she gets worked up about something because her accent REALLY comes out! And I gotta agree with everyone that votes for "soda" :D

Funny you say that...their accent also sounds like a Connecticut accent (Connecticut is about the only New England state without a New England accent).

And it is definitely soda. Pop? Come on now....

gotta agree with you on the accent thing. CT folks have no discernible accent.

And I question this NE accent assumption. I grew up in NYC and most of the people I knew didn't have an accent- unless it was an African-American inflection (which I always think of as something resulting from the Great Migration in the early 20th century as it is sooo southern sometimes) OR unless it is West Indian, which is funny because then they will turn it on and off like my Mom, who will be speaking perfectly normal standard english one moment and then BUST OUT in patuah with one of her peeps on the phone "Wha gwan chile, a whe mi picni tink seh she a-go inna dat de ting. Dress to puss-bak-foot!!" translation for the patuah-impaired: What's up? I don't know where my daughter thinks she's going in that outfit, she looks like a low class female!

Most people I knew really didn't have an accent at all unless they wanted to, lol, including me (I will chat some patuah every once in a while when upset or amused).

Sorry, but IMO people with thick northern accents sound less intelligent not to mention annoying, especially those thick Brooklyn accents.
I would much rather hear an East Texas accent anyday than a Brooklyn accent.

yes...they may "sound" less intelligent...but where are the majority of ivy league schools located??? sure aren't in the south!!!

UMgirl 05-11-2002 10:37 PM

When I graduated from school I somehow got a midwestern/NY accent...and Im from upstate NY!

It seems that in NY if your from upstate you say Pop (Im just use to this so I gotta agree with it), and downstate (the city) says Soda. Just like they have the accents and we really dont :)
