I'm not positive, but a lot of the men who have publicly been made headlines for behavior that is viewed as improper, I think have been with their wives a long time, long before they were powerful. Perhaps it is the women (and men) who get involved with them to create a scandal who are drawn to their power? Just a random sample, equally D and R.

Elliott Spitzer (D) - met wife while in law school
Larry Craig (R) - married his wife (he is her second husband) a year after allegations of using coke with male teen Congressional pages
John Edwards (D) - met wife while in law school
Bill Clinton (D) - met Hillary while in law school
Mark Sanford (R) - met and married while he worked in New York, before political career
Mark Foley (R) - never married, and is a gay man
Marion Barry (D) - married his fourth wife before he was elected as mayor of DC
David Vitter (R) - met wife while working as a lawyer (she's one too), before politics
Jim McGreevy (D) - married both wives after start of political career, but now an out gay man (also went to law school)
Carl Paladino (1974-2005 D, 2005 - R) - married wife while in law school

WTF, so many lawyers.

^^ Um, you're looking at politicians and you're surprised that the people who write laws, govern states and run countries are lawyers?

Or maybe the wives saw the drive, determination and potential these guys had and fell for that. They were saying it was more of a "trait" that these politicians and businessmen had that made it "easier" for them to make it in politics and business. A very focused, motivated, if I can't have it I'll take it mentality. I didn't catch the whole segment but it from what I did hear it was quite interesting.

No, I find it funny that people who are trained to think logically and critically make some extremely poor choices, including illegal ones. I also get the lulz like you do, when someone is all about morals, Jesus, omg the children, abstinence only, the bizness in women's vaginas, gays ruining everything out in public, and doing exactly what they say they're against in private.

I think for many of those men it was also made "easier" by being white, Christian, perceived or living as or are heterosexual, and from certain socioeconomic backgrounds that allowed them privilege and access to education and assets, and meeting women with those same traits.

True but that's only half the story. It's almost a given that any politician, Dem or GOP, is going to be White, hetero, Christian, educated and independently wealthy. What I was trying to get at is the A-type personalities that most of these guys have. You don't see many timid, shy, soft-spoken, introverted politicians in D.C.

Here is the way I look at it. For the most part many Repubs run their mouths about "family values" et al and then have to "eat their own" because there are lechers amongst them who are simply nothing more than hypocrites. The other Repubs don't want the mantle of hypocrites foisted upon them so they react or in some cases over react to the actions of others. Several who have been forced out should not have been (Lee for one) but many who should have been shown the door escaped (somewhat) scot free (Vitter, Sanford). They should just shut up and do their jobs and live their morals through their actions.

Bottom line is that the Repubs could learn a lot from the Dems on how not to be hypocrites when it comes to "values and morals".

Thanks for the clarification. We usually can discuss differences in politics with getting too heated. In the end, though, the Dems have to chuck a few deviants whether they shut their mouths about family values or not. I have just been amused that the biggest proponents of family values have seemed to make the worst personal decisions.

Interesing food for thought. That's not where I thought you were coming from, so I too appreciate the clarification. I'm going to chew on this for a while -- it is an interesting observation.

Harry Reid:

"I'm not here to defend Weiner."

That made me laugh and I'm officially tired of hearing "Weiner"...in reference to him.

"If you will not stand for Weiner, good sir, then who will? Or shall the sacrifices of our men, from Donger Pass to the shores of Nipoli, prove fruitless?"

He is a public figure and fair game, I just wish there was more respect for the wife and what she may want to be private.

Weiner to resign over sexting scandal, Dems say

Quote:

WASHINGTON – Rep. Anthony Weiner has decided to resign his seat in Congress after the scandal spawned by lewd photos of himself that the New York lawmaker sent online to numerous women, relieved Democratic officials said Thursday.

"It's my understanding that later in the day he will have a news conference," House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said without elaboration. Weiner's office said he would talk to reporters at 2 p.m. EDT in Brooklyn.

Weiner, 46, has been on leave from the House and at a treatment facility at an undisclosed location since last weekend. He has not been seen in public since telling reporters on Saturday morning he intended to return to work.

One official said Weiner telephoned Pelosi and Rep. Steve Israel of New York, the head of the party campaign committee, on Wednesday evening to tell them of his plans to quit.

They had pressured him to resign, concluding the relentless media focus on his activities was complicating the Democrats' efforts to position themselves politically for the 2012 elections.
