I disagree. I think it would be more fun for it to blink out of existence on these boards through our collective shunning. :p

So, no one cares about the list that was posted? Not who is or isn't included, the focus on overall size, why philanthropy has such a big place in the descriptions, that stuff like friendly enviro, traditions, alumni, etc aren't discussed at all... BUT, there's 4 full pages of bitching cause the guy didn't post a direct link.

Yeah. That's really great. Definitely top tier material.

I tell you what we should do... we should automatically take any legitimate post, immediately trash the poster, then start talking about one of: A) the forum rules, B) how insulted we are for reading everything as if it's a personal insult to ourselves and our org, C) what's happening on jersey shore, or D) all of the above at the same time. That would for sure make this place the pinnacle of greek-dom. People will bypass the humor of Old Row and TFM to come here for legitimate help and conversation. People will automatically be better just for having logged on here. It'll be spectacular.

What the fuck?

ETA: No, no one cares about the list because it's a matter of opinion and isn't groundbreaking by any means.

Also, the forum rules are in place for a reason. If someone isn't following the rules, they need to be informed. Sure, there was a lot of side chatter about it, but we're not here to sit in a circle and do crafts. Some of us just waste time on GC. If you think shit is "mean" or "unnecessary," leave. No one is forcing (general) you to post here. Get thicker skin.

"I got them from this website online" is a silly response. Everyone kind of went with that.

And no, NOBODY cares about these lists. We've all seen a zillion of them before, they're all different, and it's basically one person talking out of his ass. I can't believe you would care after decades of fraternity involvement. You do know Princeton University has nothing to do with the Princeton Review, right?

Posting an entire piece of someone else's work on a site is bad enough form. Posting it without even giving credit is plagiarism. The intent doesn't matter.

whoa whoa whoa haha. I'm just a lurker on GC, I VERY rarely post. I just think its a little silly to accuse him of plagerisim since he's just posting on a forum

Plagiarism does not just happen in scholarly settings, it happens everywhere...ask George Harrison.

It should care about PLAGIARISM, since its opinion matters as much as dander. The fact that it plagiarized from such a flimsy source is more reason to write it off. So, we needed to know where it got the info. See how that works?

Not exactly just because he didn't post a link. The responses were due as much if not more to his attitude.

As for the forum rules, going round and round about "how things are usually done here" is one thing. Copyright infringement is another, and is a matter that the owner of this site has specifically said is not allowed, and for good reason. I can tell you that I for one wouldn't have responded the way I did had the OP not kept trying to justify what could have just been a slip-up with "I got it from a website," "What's the big deal?," and "Who cares?"

And as for caring about the list that was posted:

So no, I don't care about this list, anymore than I care about any other "Top Whatever" list. They have about as much worth in my estimation as a typical "Who's Who."

Wait, so you're saying those Who's Who yearbooks that cost $500 don't mean jack? I rue the day I learned to read!

Or you can just take your head out of your ass and read enough posts to see that people actually DID comment on the list.

That'd probably be the easiest solution for us, probably not for you.

You do not belong on Old Row.

dnall 04-08-2011 04:18 PM

I agree the list is pretty worthless. I'm never much into ranking BS, and the criteria/discussion of entries was even more worthless.

Not caring about a list is a great reason not to post in a thread. Saying it's worthless, or pointing out why it's worthless and discussing alternate criteria would have been very valid responses.

Should he have posted the link? Yes of course. He should have been gently reminded of that fact by a moderator & the problem would have been corrected. Instead, a couple people came at him and others piled on. That's fucked up. If you're not a moderator/admin, it's not your place. You should either refer the matter to them or handle it by PM.

A lot of people come here for serious advice &/or legitimate discussion of real topics within greek life. This community doesn't do a very good job of keeping it's eye on that ball, and a lot of times devolves into acting like spoiled children. That's harmful to everyone. Much more harmful than not posting a link or asking a stupid question or not figuring out the search button.

So maybe the kid's got an attitude, so do I, so do a whole lot of the people posting in this thread. Can we call check that shit and move on to being freakin productive? Cause the rest of this is bullshit.

It's so harmful, but the board has existed for over a decade? Oh, OK.

We can, but we likely won't.

Thanks.
