I've heard of the name "Female" (Fee-mah-lay) in a movie before. The rest are just plain crazy. Can you imagine naming your baby girl VAGINA!!! I don't care how you pronounce it, its still terrible!

My cousin used to date a girl named Tenderlee (Tender-ly). I think her sister's name was Lovelee (Lovely) or something like that.

I remember reading a study done by a sociologist who came to the conclusion that the reason we (and more often than not, it's US) give our children these kinds of names is because we want our children to know that they're "special" and "different" in a world that will show them every day that they're not valued because of the colour of their skin. The same sociologist also believed that it had something to do with the fact of the death rates in African American communities, especially among young Black men - since your child most likely wouldn't grow up to be a doctor, lawyer, professor, or head of a major corporation, his or her distinction should come from the name you gave them. :(

I wish I could remember the scholar who did the study, but it was a long time ago that I read it.

Damn. That's all I can say. Oh, when will some of us stop hurting our children with those names?

If I'm blessed with kids (yeah, gotta find a husband first ;) :p ), they will not have a made-up name. And I don't care if they get clowned on the playground.

Ok, I used to work with this girl and her name was Dorcas (pronounced kinda like it looks...Dork-us). I used to call people that name in elementary!

I know a girl named Precious Pearl. And my great-aunts have some old names...Orrie and Azzie

My mother is a teacher. And, about five to ten years ago she had a boy whose name was JPXXXVASRE. :eek: There is no way to pronounce it. His whole name is actually J-P-X-X-X-V-A-S-R-E. He had no last name. The teachers at the schools just ended up calling him JP Johnson because his mother's last name was Johnson.

When one of teachers asked his mother why she had given him such an "unusual" name, she said that she gave him the first initial of each of her close friends' names. Now, couldn't she have arranged them in some order that was pronounceable.

Shamefully, JP was in middle school reading at a second grade level. We all speculated that his name had something to do with it since that is normally the first thing children learn how to read and spell.

There is a young girl at my old church with the same name; however, she spells it Arteisha.

This thread is a trip! I can't believe people can be so ignorant about naming their children.

I know someone who named their daughter: Edlicia (Ed-lis-cia)

My first name is Occasio (O-Cause-E-O) and my last name is Gee(G). Occasio is actually a boriqua name. I love them both. My first name is different & I've never met another with that first name. & my last name is cool especially back in the day w/ snoop & dre & the whole west coast thing. The initials OG aren't too bad either.
