True, but you'd still have the money to do your own art - of whatever sort.

And other stars have made less drastic changes from more packaged to more independent over time. Particularly if they were young when they got big and begin writing more of their own music as they get older.

But I don't really care one way or the other about Lady Gaga. (Or Madonna, or Rihanna or whoever) ((But Nickelback sucks.))

:cool::D:)

Either they'll think you're a pretentious idiot, or they'll be like "oh, they were so fakey at the beginning of their career - eff them." Christina Aguilera is a RARE exception, but that's because she can sing her ass off - I think she'll be around when she's 60 - and because she started out so young. Not to mention I think her family issues made her less likely to stand up to the record company and tell them to eff off when they were intent on making her BritBrit #2.

I just don't hear anything new or interesting coming out of Lady Gaga. She's got a good voice, but she obviously got signed in the wake of Norah Jones etc and then it became clear that field was saturated/over, so she went (or was encouraged to go) the freak route.

Wasn't Kelly Clarkson the same way? She lost all that weight and went blond for the record company, and as soon as she got away she gained her weight back and changed her hair? (she looks WAY better now than when she lost all that weight)

Since this is kind of a random thread anyway:
1. Gaga was super annoying at the games and she looks stupid in the photos. Seinfeld was right about her. Her music is cool and she should being a dumb attention whore.

2. Totally random: I think that Rihanna's people bit off of Fefe Dobson (I'm happy to find there are people all over the Internet who agree with me). Rihann is a combo of Dobson and Grace Kelly with a hint of Beyonce.

OMG.

I have been saying that forever.

You are one of like 10 people who actually know who i'm talking about when I say that. Most of my friends are like "who is that anyway?"

I only know 2 of Fefe Dobson's songs and they don't sound like Rhianna.

I hate when people have these conversations. The industry is scrambling to survive under lacking record sales, there's nothing new under the sun. NOTHING. Everything is always going to look like or similar to something else. There's nothing we or these celebs can do about it. This makes impossible for comparisons not to exist. It happens.

As far as Rhianna's style, it's actually very typical of young Caribbean women to do the most randomest f*cking stuff with their hair and be showy with their bodies. It's a cultural thing. I don't really much care for her voice or her island for that matter, but she looks fierce. Whatever.

No one was comparing Katy to Gaga, it had to do with Katy's comment on the "Alejandro" video. (Which someone may have mentioned earlier).

I love the Mother Monster. She has brought so much joy into my life with her lyrics that I can't even describe it. It's cliche, but it's the truth.

I beg to differ, there's a lot of NEW, great music out there but people like you just don't care to explore/search out/find it so the industry pumps out this crap because the general public will eat it up. Since the popularization of itunes almost anyone can release and sell their own music online, it's not like it was 15 years ago where you had to be signed under a major label just to get your record album up for sale. Not sure but I've heard that there are twice as many record labels and higher concert revenues today than there were 20 years ago. It's not the music industry thats hurting, it's the 5 record labels that 20 years ago controlled 90% of the industry and made billions that are the ones hurting.

KSUViolet06 06-28-2010 08:47 PM

There's plenty good/new out there. You just don't hear much of it when radio plays (I kid you not) the same 20 songs all day long.

That's not what she meant. She meant that at this point, rock & roll is 60 years old and no matter how "new" your band is, there's probably a Keith Richards riff or a Tina Turner grunt in there somewhere. It's new to you because you're so young, but throw some youtube links of your "indie" bands on here and I guarantee you I'll be able to find someone who sounds like them.

However, there is a difference between having listened to something so many times it becomes part of you and emulating it subconciously, and blatant biting.

Stop making assumptions about me and the music I listen to and what I do or do not do when looking for new music based on ONE paragraph.

Yep and emulating it consciously is okay if you acknowledge where your influences come from.

That doesn't mean that you shouldn't have your own style. I'm not talking about Rihanna and FeFe Dobson when I say this so BabyFL needs not have a hernia. LOL.

And I can say, " For every mainstream chart topping artist you listen to I can find a "indie" artist who sounds better, performs better, and has more raw talent then them". I never said artists can't have influences, I jumped in on the topic of people changing their style and sound JUST to make it big.

I am down to play though... Most of these were released within the last two years, and while they might not be exactly groundbreaking, they are a hell of a lot more interesting and fun then Gaga or Katy Perry.
