I make it a personal policy not to do other people's research and if I choose to express that opinion then so be it. If you choose to post a passive aggressive "Please." in response to my opinion than you can expect similar responses to mine above in the future.

I understand, which means it should have been phrased more along the line of

Hank Nuwer wrote great books on Hazing and its effects, however people who are interested in pledging should read other good books (examples here that don't include "Pledged") about Fraternities and Sororities about the good things and that touch on hazing before reading Hank Nuwer's works.

One of the replies in this thread indicated I'd asked a similar question in 2001. In that thread, there was an article which indicated that in 2001, Hank Nuwer had said there had only been 2 deaths in sororities in his research. (and as was pointed out in this thread, it was said prior to the drownings in Southern California that weren't NPC). So probably I misremembered going through the appendix of Broken Pledges. Finding my copy (or someone else's) is the next step.

As for writing a book on the subject, there is no way that I could improve on Hank Nuwer, so I'm not going to try.

I think it's more that most hazing doesn't lead to death but can still be scary. Buckets of offal dumped on people's heads for example. And MOST hazing falls into that "technically hazing but no one here has a problem with anything" category.

Now, if you count alcohol deaths that could have been provoked/pushed by hazing or even just peer pressure of a senior member over a NM.. I dunno. Still rare but just sort of 'feels' scary to someone w/o the knowledge.

naraht, I have never read Broken Pledges. Is that a good book? I might have to check it out. I am attempting to read this Wuthering Heights and it is boring the hell out of me. I'm thinking of picking up a copy of Broken Pledges. Do you have any other interesting books you would suggest regarding Greek Life, in general, that I could check out?

I do recommend it. It is definitely not an anti-fraternity diatribe, Nuwer was in a local social fraternity at Buffalo State College (this was during a time when the National Fraternities were banned at the New York State Schools). From what I understand he has been invited to give talks at National Conventions of some the NIC fraternities. A more complete answer would probably be better in the Greek Life section, do you want to start it there, or should I?

Start a thread about what? Do you mean start one about books on Greek life? I know there was a thread which talked about movies regarding Greek life but, I'm not sure if there was one about books. If you have a list, please start a thread. That sounds like a great idea.
