Examples of helpful, honest, polite, non-insulting advice from this very thread:

Look at the sorority members on campus and assess their style. If they have piercings other than ears and such, you're probably OK. But if the majority of the girls are walking around in polo shirts and pearls or other very classic/conservative dress on a daily basis, you should probably take them out for rush.

Basically you conform so you stand out for WHO you are rather than what you are wearing - if that makes any sense.

It's not lying, anymore than the sorority women not wearing what they would wear when they go out to a party is lying. Different things are appropriate at different times.

I can't count the number of women who get piercings or tattoos while active sorority members, but thinking of joining a sorority like an interview of sorts is not a bad idea. You want to be remembered for your accomplishments and conversation, perhaps as "erynnari, the woman who coordinated a meals on wheels program on bicycles and rollerskates to feed people as well as be environmentally friendly" and not "that girl with the facial piercings."

If you do wear the lip ring, please, whatever you do, do not play with it with your mouth. it may be a subconscious thing you wouldn't even realize you're doing, but it would probably not be a positive impression, and I can say it seriously skeeves me out.

@violetpretty- No, of course I don't need confirmation that my piercings are ok. I've kept them in this long, i've reassured myself that they are just fine.

So if you know they are ok, then why ask the question on GC?

Or really get a sense of why it makes sense to remove them, even though it's still noticeable that i've got them, only to put them back in once i've pledged.

You got plenty of responses that were polite AND explained why you should probably remove them for recruitment. You look like you have your mind made up, though. Good luck with that.

@Als463- I'm not SEC, for sure. I'd never fit in down south. I'm a Mid-Westerner. I currently live close to Miami University, and i've never once had a problem with anyone up there. I obviously care what others think, or I would have waltz'd into recruitment without posting here. But there is an extent to which I care. Even if I take the rings out for the night, there are still holes, makeup wont cover that up. People will obviously know i've got them.

Then, if you are attending Kent State (as you can see I am not from Ohio-so, sorry if I am wrong with where you may be attending) then KSUViolet could give you some great advice, I'm sure.

I know we have Ohio University Alums on here, as well as Ashland University Alums. If you are looking for people who attend Capital University, I'm not sure what to tell you, other than they have only local sororities, so it may not be as big a deal to them.

Barbie's_Rush 05-10-2010 10:41 PM

I was simply telling you how some sorority members will perceive you. You came here and ASKED that question!

Personally, I think your piercings shout out "desperately insecure trendster." As long as you have holes in your face, people will make assumptions about you. To compare your decision to mutilate your body to someone's ethnicity or anything else they were born with is pathetic.

Of course you'll be the first one running here to complain when your oh-so-unique self doesn't get a bid.

It's definitely none of the above schools.

Nope. Especially not if she's describing it as similar to Miami. I think Denison has been described as kind of like MU, but that's the only school I can think of right now (after a full day of work lol).

Whoops....

Hahaha...Oh, wow....Sorry. As I said, I am usually horrible about knowing schools in other states. Now, had she said Pennsylvania, I would have been able to come up with other schools.

I just realized I was trying to hand KSUViolet to this girl for advice when KSUViolet may not even want to give it. Sorry. I didn't even think of that until later, either.

Well, I agree with everything that has been said on here regarding advice. Hopefully she will find her home and take advantage of the good advice that has been given.

violetpretty 05-10-2010 11:02 PM

She said there are 3 chapters.

Oh, that's right. I forgot she said that. Hmmm...I am confused as anything....Nope, still couldn't figure it out if you asked me to.

I don't know that I'd go that far - different people get piercings for different reasons - and I don't think it's "mutilating" your body anymore than laying in a tanning bed for an hour every day or frying the bejeepers out of your hair by straightening it every day (both of which plenty of sorority women do).

And I don't think she said piercing = being an ethnicity. She said those are both things that people judge you on. (Although two of the things she mentioned - being blonde or being fat - ARE things that you can change if you so desire.)

KSUViolet06 05-10-2010 11:06 PM

I am fairly certain I know what school this is. You'll definitely want to tone it down a little (maybe with the little stud as opposed to a big obvious hoop).

Similar to Miami? Conservative? Come on y'all, this has Youngstown State written all over it. HAHAHAHAHA. (It's never not a good time for a Y-town joke.)

Funniest thing I've heard all day. When people make "hood" jokes about where I went to HS, I refer them to Youngstown. lol.

Kappamd 05-10-2010 11:17 PM

^^^AHHHHHH, I have been suppressing YSU jokes since we started trying to figure out what school it was!

Ohio Ladies...

Wow, I was thinking Marietta College. There are three NPCs there and it is a well known school with a decent party scene (from what I know of having a friend who graduated from there).

If I go by what my friend told me, you still want to be careful how you look when you go through recruitment. Anyone from Marietta want to comment because as a Penn State alumna, I can't really give any really good advice.
