Just found this thread & wanted to share my encouragement to you Leslie Anne!

I don't go to the movies except maybe once a year... But I do rent movies each week (for work, and I sneak them home lol)

Here's the list of my opinion of the following movies:

Avatar - I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard from a lot of friends that the IMAX experience is the best way to watch it!
Coraline - Couldn't watch all of it... I never liked anything that resembled the Nightmare Before Christmas type movie - they just freak me out.
District 9 - Showed this at work, and the majority of the people that attended did not like this movie.
The Hurt Locker - I loved this movie!
Inglorious Basterds - This movie was alright... I thought this was more gory than The Hurt Locker. And like someone else had mentioned, I thought it was based on a true story - until the end of the movie. lol ;)
Julie and Julia - I thought this movie was really cute!
Up - I typically will take movies up to my mom's, but I couldn't have her watch this one... I knew she would be so depressed by it. But I did enjoy the parts that didn't make me cry :)

We seem to have very similar taste in movies! I just watched Inglourious Basterds. I really liked it but I didn't love, love, love it. Christoph Waltz was absolutely phenomenal in it though. "I say Bingo!" lol

It's frustrating. I've been called out of town for the week and I haven't been able to watch any movies. I'm running out of time!

*bump*

one day left... how is your mad dash going, Leslie Anne?

southbymidwest 03-06-2010 11:19 PM

So Leslie Anne, do you have any favorites for Oscars?

honeychile 03-06-2010 11:31 PM

I've only seen two of the listed movies:

An Education: I enjoyed it, a bit artsy but despite what happens, you leave without needing to open a vein. I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes English films (yes, it's a film, not a movie, if you get what I mean).

Julia and Julie: Saw it in Chicago ;) and liked it a lot! A very nice date movie, but how sad that Julia Child didn't recognize the homage being paid to her. Meryl Streep had to be wearing stilts to pull it off, and she did it well!

Honey's thoughts on the Oscars: Why are so many Academy Award winning films so gloomy and depressing? Is that what the Academy considers art? I don't expect (or want) the likes of The Sound of Music winning year after year, but I do like to leave the theatre feeling good about seeing a movie once in a while. And in a total 180, immediately after seeing American Beauty, I said, "That's this year's Oscar." Marvelous imagery, even with the dire plot.

Well, in the last week my "mad dash" turned into more of a little old granny shuffle. I only managed to see half of my list. I do have some Oscar picks though.

Best Actor I've gotta go with Jeff Bridges. He was great in Crazy Heart and he's way overdue for an Oscar.

Best Supporting Actor I'm really hoping Christoph Waltz wins it. He was the glue of Inglourious Basterds. I thought he was utterly brilliant in it. It's likely that Stanley Tucci will win it though. I love Stanley Tucci but I'll be disappointed if he wins.

Best Actress Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren are always brilliant but I think it's obviously going to go to Sandra Bullock. This bugged me at first but comedies never win Oscars and that's really her strongsuit. She's a wonderful comedic actress so maybe it all evens out in the end.

Best Supporting Actress I really liked Vera Farmiga. I didn't get to see Precious though. Mo'Nique won the Golden Globe and that's either the precursor to an Oscar OR it opens the door for someone else to win because they've already been recognized. Who knows?

Best Picture Oh, please anything but Avatar. I haven't even seen it but I've heard enough about it. The Hurt Locker would be my choice. I doubt Inglourious Basterds will win but I'd be okay with that as well.

So, those are my picks having only seen half of the films. It's nice to be interested in the Academy Awards again after so long.

Finally, I'd like to thank the Academy :p and the many members of Greekchat who encouraged me to try to tackle something very difficult. It's been much more than just watching movies. :)

I probably won't be back on GC until tomorrow, so I wanted to say "Cheers!" to Les. I hope you enjoy the Awards tonight!

*chinking glasses* :D

You did quite well!

Did anyone else notice that, in the tribute to those who passed away last year, they didn't include Farrah Fawcett?

I did. They also didn't have Andrew Koenig. I thought the person doing the camera work during that really messed up big time too. They did too many long distance shots of the screen and the guy singing. All the focus should have been on those who passed away. I was really disappointed.

Andrew Koenig passed away in 2010, so he wouldn't have been included. I was surprised about Farrah. I think they had a few technical glitches, including the memorial section and one of the categories (I think the presenters were waiting for video and there was none). All in all, a good Oscars. No surprises at all, and I'm glad the awards were spread out over so many films. I hate it when one movie takes everything.

I for one am very glad you did it, Leslie. It's hard for anyone to watch all those movies in such a short amount of time. Congratulations on your own personal wins! :)

The popcorn alone must have sent your cholesterol sky high! ;) Serously, I've very impressed at how many you called correctly.

Back to the deceased montage: Did anyone else notice that they had Actor-Director-Producer- etc under every name - but Michael Jackson's? They really dropped the ball this year!

Is anyone going to mention the dresses and such? I loved Sandra Bullock's dress, but thought her lipstick should have been at least one shade lighter.

In other years, they've done it so that it was everyone who died since the last Oscars. I can remember times when someone who just died a week earlier was included.

I agree about the camera work, but I must shake my head at James Taylor being referred to as "the guy singing." :p

This is the first time I can remember going to bed before the Oscars were over. It just seemed to drag on forever.

No comments yet on Kathy Ireland's "performance"?

southbymidwest 03-09-2010 03:32 PM

OK, I'll take the bait. She looked afflicted with her right arm pulled back and her wierd twisty sideways "tall girl slump" as she interviewed people or chatted with her co-hosts. Not sure if it was the camera shot/angle that was the reason, but it wasn't working for her. Problem with tall girl slump is that you don't even know you are doing it most of the time. Just about every tall girl/woman that I have ever known (including me) has had it at one point or another, usually in high school, but it can creep up on you when you are talking to/interviewing those who are a head shorter than you. She seems to be generically pleasant enough, but I was too distracted by her body posture.
