I've heard the word copacetic before but I'm unsure of the context... how is it used (I know what it means - just can't think of a place where copacetic would be more appropriate or commonly used than "fine" or "good)?

When I was younger, I used to feel that "****a" was the same as "****er", but as I've had more exposure to different cultures I see that it's not remotely the same. Although I would find it offensive if somebody from any other race said it besides an African-American.

I look it like this. My guy friends, being the mature global citizens they are, always call each other "douche" and "pervert" and stuff like that and everybody laughs, because even though its technically an insult, in reality it is being used as a term of endearment. But if somebody else came up to them as a group and called one of them a douche they would be furious, because they don't have the group acceptance to use those insults (even as a term of endearment). I think it is a racialized (talk about an ironic thread to make up a word in) version of that.

Back to the original thread, most of my pet-peeves are sports related. I can't STAND it when commentators refer to a baseball team as a "ball club". Don't ask why. I also can't stand when people say things like, "You got your Kobe Bryants, you got your Lamar Odoms"...no, you have Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom. AGH it drives me crazy!

Also I hate it when people say "case and point" instead of "case in point". It doesn't even make sense that way!!

Impact when used as a verb.

Amazing, as in "they're all amazing."

Concerning when used to mean worrisome, as in "that's the most concerning part of this."

Myself when it should be me or I, as in "On behalf of ree-Xi and myself . . . ."

Nope. People born in the 50s.

Really?

It made me think of this song:

That is the only thing that made me think that. Oh, and it kind of sounds like something a Ninja Turtle would say. But they were using '50's words for the most part anyway.

I hate when women refer to other women as "bitch" or "slut," etc. in passing. Like, "hey bitch, what's up?"

Seriously?

Yessssss I completely agree!!! It's like I have to take a hot shower and scrub myself clean if I hear that word, and I really don't know why. lol

I've never heard people calling each other 'spic' in the way that blacks call each other 'n***a.' Beaner, yes. Spic, no. I've only heard it in a negative way.

Just like others have said. It is definitely NOT the same connotation.

ETA: Idk if i'm the only one, but I hate seeing both those words typed out.

Oh most def that would be offensive. IDK if 'spic' is just specifically for Mexicans, but I know a lot of PRs, Cubans, etc get suuuuuuper offended if you call them 'spic' because then they think you are calling them a Mexican. I'm just like :confused: whatever.

I've been coming across this phrase pretty often lately:

"If you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything."

Drives me effing nuts.

I also hate when females refer to themselves as "that bitch" or "the baddest bitch" or anything along those lines. I instantly lose so much respect for people that do that.

Well it's a combination. Most of it was horrible misspelling, but the E instead of the I was to make a point. Just like the Kappas constantly replace C with K. Nothing against the Kappas, but that irritates the crap out of me for some reason.

pshsx1 12-13-2009 09:45 PM

Thank you! Is everyone in the whole world saying this now? I'm getting really sick of it.

Another phrase I can't stand (because I've been listening to/seeing it everywhere since I joined a sorority, 5+ years ago) ... "From the outside looking in, you can never understand it. From the inside looking out, you can never explain it."

Makes sense. But I wouldn't mind if I never heard it again.

p.s. DrPhil.. I just noticed that I'm in your signature. I'm honored :D

I am a teacher, and I ABHOR "Ed Speak." Such as:
Realia= visuals used with English Language Learners
Paragraphing= writing a paragraph
Automaticity=reading fluently out loud

pedagogy. That word needs to die a horrible death.
Multicultural. Yes I get it's important in the classroom but I'm so sick of hearing about it every single class I take!

"coinkidink" or "coinkydink"

It is such a terrible word that it doesn't even have a standardized spelling. Gracious, this word absolutely makes my skin crawl. I have no idea why, but I cannot stand it when people say it. It is worse than hearing someone pull tape off of Styrofoam.
