I found this on the greek page... it's not like these girls didn't read this and KNOW what the Adelphean Society was.
Sorority History Nationally The first society for women, the Adelphean Society (now Alpha Delta Pi) was established in 1851 at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. The Philomathean Society (later named Phi Mu)[14] was founded at Wesleyan College a year later in 1852. The Adelphean Society and the Philomathean Society did not take on their modern Greek names (Alpha Delta Pi and Phi Mu, respectively) until 1904 when they expanded beyond the Wesleyan campus. They are now often referred to as the Macon Magnolias. Many aspects of Alpha Delta Pi and Phi Mu (such as the stars and hands on their badges and the mascot of the lion) are similar due to the fact that while at Wesleyan a founder of Alpha Delta Pi and Phi Mu's Mary Ann DuPont (Lines) were roommates. On April 28, 1867, Intercollegiate Sorosis (later known by its original Greek motto Pi Beta Phi) was founded at Monmouth College, in Monmouth, Illinois. It is the first sorority founded on the model of the men's fraternity. A year later it established a second chapter at Iowa Wesleyan College. In the mid-1800s women were beginning to be admitted to previously all-male universities, and there were many women who felt that it was in their best interest to band together. The first collegiate women formed women's fraternities in an effort to counteract the widespread opposition to their presence. [15] The earliest organizations were founded as "women's fraternities" or "fraternities for women;" the term sorority was coined by professor Frank Smalley in 1874, in reference to the Greek organization being established at Syracuse University, Gamma Phi Beta. Alpha Phi was also established at Syracuse University, in 1872, and along with Alpha Gamma Delta, these three sororities make up the Syracuse Triad. The first organization to adopt the word sorority was Sigma Kappa, established on November 9, 1874 at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. http://studentaffairs.utep.edu/Default.aspx?tabid=55990 |

I know that i'm not an ADPi, but if you all had any issues or questions about this group it would have been nice if you all could have asked me about it. I could have told you all everything
Yes, this group did call themselves the Adelphean Society originally (why they call themselves "new" instead of Nu, I don't know however). The group was started to eventually become affiliated with an NPC. When they started they wanted to be affiliated with ADPi, thus why they called themselves the Adelphean Society. When I got back to campus, the GL advisor at the time (an AGD btw, who some on GC know personally) had me talk to them. They are very sweet girls who obviously were just a little misguided. They aren't like the Kappa Kappa Gamma copycats who just want to use the names, symbols, etc just to use them. They do really want to be affiliated with an NPC. They did change their name to New Delta, and i'm pretty sure I know their reasons why. I didn't know that their motto and things were the same as ADPi, and I might speak to the current GL advisor about it tomorrow at our AP meeting. |

It's been discussed many times over when groups like this come up- copying symbols/mottos/etc is not going to get the group the kind of attention they are looking for. |

ETA: and what I meant was someone could have shot me a PM just saying "hey epchick, you go/went to UTEP right? Have you heard about [so and so] group, do you know why they are using ADPi symbols, etc?" I would have gotten straight on it, and tried my best to get it straightened out. Quote:

I also go to UTEP and this group has been trying to get picked up by a national NPC group. They started out as AKL sweehearts and formed the Aldelphean Society and then New Delta in 2007. Starting out they wanted to become a colony of ADPi but for some reason they didn't want to expand to UTEP. Finally, last semester (Fall 2009), ZTA and AXiD nationals gave the ok for New Delta to expand. This month we will know what national NPC groups are interested in picking up New Delta. I've heard rumors of ASA and DZ. We'll see. In the end, ZTA & AXiD have final say.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when it comes to expansion doesn't the school and panhellenic council have the final say, not the chapters?
This is what I've always thought, hence my asking. |

Well, the chapters at the school are A Xi D and ZTA currently, so he's kind of right since that's all that the school's Panhel is made up of, but he makes it sound like the expansion packets are getting sent to their nationals or something.
The chapter should vote on what their Panhel delegate does (and I'm sure sometimes they get "nudges" from their HQ) and the delegate votes accordingly, but if she wants to go rogue and vote otherwise...she can. She'll probably lose her office or get terminated for doing so, but she can do it. However, in this case there's an interest group involved, so hopefully if the interest group says "we really like PQR and we can't stand JKL" the Panhel members won't pick JKL just to be jagoffs. |
