I just came across this old thread, and, after sweeping off the dust, I'll provide some accurate information. The CEO of the $6.1 billion dollar company known as Victoria's Secret is a Pi Beta Phi from Oklahoma named (Sharen) Jester Turney.
She named it Phi Beta Pink as a honor/wink for Pi Beta Phi. The Pi Phis at OU are reportedly very pretty and feminine, and many wore pink.
The Angel is the unofficial symbol of Pi Phi, so Jester creatively capitalized on this aspect of Pi Beta Phi and created a HUGE hit with this marketing tool. The fashion shows are televised worldwide with superstar models.
Many chapters of Pi Beta Phi have "Pink Parties" to raise money for philanthropic projects. It has been a win/win for all concerned.

There is no company called Victoria's Secret. It is part of Limited Brands.

Apparel Merchandising minor in college. Actually there was a Victoria's Secret company/brand with a handful of stores and they were purchased in the early 1980s by Limited Inc. It was started by a man and his wife after he realized that men did not want to go into lingerie stores to make purchases. We looked at the company in one of our case studies.

Not mutually exclusive. Victoria's Secret is a company that us wholly owned by L Brands.

The Pi Phi connection seems pretty "urban legend-y" to me. The Pink Parties at my daughter's chapter are strictly sisterhood events, with a Cookie Shine for the new members.

And the Pink Parties have been around for a very long time!

See this story on the CEO of Victoria's Secret, Sharon Jester Tunney, a DG from Oklahoma.

URBAN MYTH - There is no truth to this rumor, folks. There is no Victoria's Secret connection with Pi Phi. Sharon Tunney is indeed a Delta Gamma.

And not to be the bearer of bad news but Mrs. Wrigley was not a Pi Phi. Mrs. Parker wasn't either. I thought these rumors were pretty much laid to rest, but I received an e-mail just this week from an incredulous alumna who heard these "facts" as a pledge in the 1970s. I heard them, too, but it doesn't make them true.

Reminds me of the time the Theta Archivist told me that the kite in the opening credits of "That Girl" had absolutely nothing to do with Marlo Thomas' Theta connection. I just kept repeating, "But that's what the Chi Chapter members told me when I went through rush." My repeating that didn't make it true.

>>I bet if you look at any sorority or any group of young women, a certain percentage would wear the color pink at any given time. I also guarantee that many women in other sororities at other schools are "reportedly very pretty and feminine."

Don't you think it's odd that someone would create something that means something special to a very small, exclusive group, for millions of other people to wear?

Apparently the myth is being propagated elsewhere online...

"What is Victoria's secret???
The Victoria's secret store has a secret. My girlfriend just got initiated into her sorority pi beta phi which is the sorority the designer of victoria's secret made. Only the girls in pi beta phi know the secret and apparently nobody else does.

Does anyone know what the secret is or could be, she says i will never find the answer and her sorority has sworn to secrecy to never tell, and signed some piece of paper to say the will never tell anyone outside the sorority."

Thanks to the Internet and even the invention of the telephone, it's so easy to research stories like this one.

angels&angles 11-23-2013 02:57 PM

I know the secret because I'm a Pi Phi! NO ONE ELSE WILL EVER KNOW. It is the main secret of Pi Beta Phi, and we are told at initiation. But my chapter president is being a doody head right now, so I will tell you.

The secret is (highlight to read... I don't want EVERYONE to know)

This is all a bunch of bullshit

jen0830 11-23-2013 02:58 PM

Well shut my mouth wide open!

I stand corrected.

I will inform my 'knowledgable' friend about the inaccuracy of this information. I will also tell my Kappa sister that she can stop teasing me about our sorority alum being famous for "making underwear'. I find VS has attractive sleepwear and lingerie.

Thank you ladies, and you know who you are, for your kind PMs setting the record straight. Also, thanks to those who responded in a gracious, genteel, and polite manner about my misconception and miscommunication.

It is so nice to be informed with consideration and thoughtfulness, and not sarcasm or negativity.

As for those of you who replied otherwise, and you know who you are, ahem... "Need a refill on your Haterade?"

FSUZeta 11-23-2013 03:46 PM

FYI, we have a FSU Tri Delta to thank for Spanx!

Cheerio 11-23-2013 05:21 PM

And a Kappa is responsible for making the (old-time) monthly boxes light blue and dark blue. ;)
