Here's hope for your daughter^^

bamamom4, Alpha Phi will be recruiting over the next couple of weeks. They have a link on the Panhellenic website. She would need to sign up for an interview. I know from my daughter that all of the other sororities have swaps already planned with Alpha Phi and they will certainly do homecoming and every other greek activity. They will be up and running within the next month. It would be a wonderful opportunity for her. They will be taking seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshman.

I would find it unusual if this is true.

A chapter which invites a PNM to preference is required to have her somewhere on the bid list.

If the PNM did IN FACT list that chapter on her sheet (whether she suicided it or not), and then that chapter did not make quota, it seems something is wrong. Even if the sorority listed her dead last on their bid list, if they did not fill up their spots (get to quota) before getting to her, she should have a place.

If you think this has happened I would say one of three things is possible:

A) the PNM did not actually put the chapter on her lists and there is some dishonesty going on there - maybe she withdrew or didn't put that chapter on her list. I know that might be hard to take if it's a PNM that's close to you.

B) There is some mistake about what quota is and the chapter actually got quota.

C) Something even more sketchy has gone down (computer errors, for example). The PNM should definitely talk to her recruitment counselor about it.

Some of the new Alpha Phis will also have the opportunity to move right into the chapter's house. University housing has agreed to release the girls from their housing contracts if they live in the dorms so they can move into the house. That is very unusual.

 :( I don't know why that statement rubs me the wrong way but it does.....

If a girl "suicides" a chapter which did not make quota, wouldn't she get a bid? Yes.

If she preffed that chapter, isn't she on their bid list, or would her rank on the list affect bid matching? All PMs invited to Pref are somewhere on the entire bid list. Should a chapter not make quota, that means that the entire bid list was exhausted.

Example: Quota is 50 and ABCs entire bid list has 103 names. If Suzy Superstar, who suicided, comes in as number 60 then no bid for her should the first 50 girls on the list match to ABC.

I agree.

I understand exactly what you're saying.

I thoroughly enjoyed looking at all of the lists. The only info. which would make it easier to analyze would be to list high schools.

Congrats to ALL chapters and their new members.

Thanks for the info in Alpha Phi. I was wondering about the already established sororities. Would girls have another chance as upperclassmen?

They might. But I would not count on it - i.e. I wouldn't skip finding out about A Phi because one of the sororities that cut me as a freshman might give me a bid when I'm a sophomore.

Unless you know that the sorority she is interested in is far under total and needs to COB many women to get to total, I would urge her to check out this opportunity.

ETA - I got kind of dizzy reading this thread - did everyone make quota? Is everyone at total after that?

It's obvious from the numbers coming in that upperclassmen do rush and receive bids, but look at the numbers again -- only a few of them get bids per chapter.

I would encourage your daughter to at least check out Alpha Phi to increase her chances. I wouldn't rule them out just because they're new on campus.

If you go by the number of actives in the Spring Scholarship report plus the new member classes from yesterday, with house total of 180, everyone but Gamma Phi is above house total.

Never ever did we, never ever would we have given a bid to someone we'd cut the year before...it isn't a snobbiness thing, or reluctance to give someone a second chance...it's just when you have hundreds of girls going through rush each year, if you've already eliminated one in the past, you have to trust your judgment that you made the right decision then, so there is no point in wasting time and invites on re-evaluating the PNM's fit with your house. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I would bet that this is by and large the way things go. Now if a freshman girl cut a house early on in the process...like after the first round...and then rushed again her sophomore year, I am willing to bet that some houses might give her another chance, since we all know how hard it is to pick which houses to cut after just one round. Someone in each house WILL remember that she went through the year before...some houses might hold a grudge, and if she cut the house later on in the process, then almost certainly she won't get invited back, but she might have an outside chance at a house she cut at a very early stage, if she does well her freshman year and has great grades and activities.

But as everyone says, the Alpha Phi thing is a wonderful opportunity, and she should consider trying to get an invitation to join there....nationals usually are very careful to select top, top girls to be the first group of New Members, so she probably will end up with a stellar PNM group, and certainly there will be much more fanfare around everything than she would get with another house...

Bamamom13 08-18-2008 04:13 PM

I also think that fairly early, it will seem like Alpha Phi is an 'established sorority'.
