Yep. The 1st one I tried, I bit into it and then spit it back into a napkin (I know, gross) then I was told that they're better to just swallow them whole. I tried that and that's when I gagged. I can't see how people find them to be so good, raw. I love them cooked though.

I don't like frog legs. Just the look of them grossed me out.

Ostrich burger- you could definitely tell it wasn't a beef burger- I'd say it was a little dryer (it's much leaner than beef) and tasted "game-y"er than beef
Pig intestines- it was part of a challenge, at a restaurant in chinatown. I chewed and swallowed as fast as I could.
Horse- The first time I went around Europe, I was only 10, and always got spaghetti with meat sauce. I got it in Paris, Vienna, Brussels, etc., etc. Looking back on the trip, and how often I ate "spaghetti with meat sauce" I likely had some beef mixed with horse meat at some point.
Prickly Pear Cactus-flavored shake- it just tasted like a regular milkshake with a different fruit flavor.

Venison- grew up in Wisconsin, so this was a regular thing for my family, and so I don't consider it exotic. I prefer it cooked as a roast. Yum!
Escargot- I love most all fresh seafood, and have had this so much I don't really consider it exotic either. What doesn't taste good with butter and garlic and olive oil?!

I consider myself pretty adventurous, but don't really like eating animals (besides seafood) that I consider to be pets, or to be inhumanely raised. So I draw the line at guinea pigs, dogs, turtles, horse (now that I know better), veal, foie gras, etc. I'm not a vegetarian by any means, and don't really care much what other folks eat, I just can't eat something that I could have myself as a pet.

People in some countries actually eat guinea pigs. But dogs?:(

Burner Wurst (spelling?) is awesome. I got it in Austria, it is a sausage that has cheese in it, not all the way filled up, just four little dots of melted cheese that run throughout the sausage that is wrapped in bacon. And I don't mean just one or two little thin strips of bacon, i mean they cover that thing up. so good

Raw oysters are great - they were actually the only seafood I would eat when I was a little kid.

And that's exactly what it looks like when people eat them. Like they're taking shots. I wish I liked them, because it looks so good when I see other people eat them. Maybe if I put something on them, that may make a difference.

I don't know why, but I love German food. Not sure if it would be considered exotic, but I love sauerkraut, especially on polish sausages. Mmmm good.:)

I don't like them raw, but I love them smoked.

A couple of days ago I went to Outback and there was a guy sitting right next to me at the bar eating his steak damn near raw. It was cooked rare...very rare. His plate was totally red. That's just worms waiting to happen. Gross.

Well done for me.

As for raw beef - if you get a chance (and you're not a vegetarian), you should try beef carpaccio. It's good stuff.

TexasWSP 09-23-2008 11:54 AM

If you order any type of expensive cut of meat and cook it to well done you should be slapped. Might as well eat boot leather. 150 degree center is medium.....which is more than the recommended safe temp. for beef/lamb/veal, etc.

Pigeon isn't bad...tastes a lot like Eurasian Dove. Practically the same thing.

Senusret I 09-23-2008 11:58 AM

^^^ When I was in middle school, our French teacher took us to a restaurant where they asked us how we wanted our burgers done. We didn't know any better and we all ordered well-done.

Never again.

(I stopped eating beef anyway, so it's a moot point)

Wow. I've never heard of that. I'm willing to try just about anything though as long as it doesn't have anything to do with feces, saliva or urine. Anything that's a part of the digestive system I won't even think about it. Anything else though, I'll try.

I used to order well-done all the time when I was younger as well, and only in the past few years (probably since college) have I changed. TexasWSP is right - it makes a huge difference in taste to have the meat cooked less, especially when the beef is of good quality.

A lot of the meat we eat is safe, but if it's cooked rare, then the risk of you getting ascariasis is more likely than not. I've seen too many things associated with that to eat my meat that way. Medium, to medium well is o.k.

Rare? I wouldn't.

RU OX Alum 09-23-2008 12:57 PM

I like my steak medium rare. Hot/warm reddish to pinkish (a bit on the bright side of pinkish though) center.

This thread makes me hungry.

SWTXBelle 09-23-2008 01:20 PM

Texans know steak

I order my steaks med-rare. I just don't want it to moo at me. My husband can take 'em blue, but I'm not there yet.

And yes, well-done is an affront to bovine dignity and deliciousness.

We get funny looks from my dad if we order medium, even. I don't think I've ever seen him order anything over medium rare.

What I am really looking forward to after having this kid is a *good* fillet, medium rare, and a big fat stout beer. Mmmmmm

Everyone on here talks about Happy Pony Rainbow Land or whatever...to me, HPRL would be a good filet, medium rare and a big fat stout beer (or good glass of whiskey or scotch, in the alternative).

SOPi_Jawbreaker 09-23-2008 01:58 PM

To me, HPRL sounds like if it was a food, it would be something overly processed, cloyingly saccharine, and completely devoid of nutritional value...like a Tastykake or Little Debbie Snack.

aephi alum 09-23-2008 10:14 PM

Oh, the steak has to be medium-rare, if not rare. In a pinch, a medium steak can be choked down with enough wine. Medium-well or well-done is a sin.

Yup love em. Marylanders are big on the oyster LOL! I still remember my dad conning me into eating a raw one in Lexington Market in Baltimore when I was 10. LOVE EM. There's a restaurant in Rehoboth Beach, DE called Fins that has THE best raw bar I've ever been to. DH and I randomly found it on our honeymoon while looking for Dogfish Head..........yum I will never forget that. And they HAVE to be served with mingionette........none of that half assed cocktail sauce LOL!

Other weird things I like.....
1) Tripe-both in pho and a tripe soup DH makes with ham shank, split peas, beef broth, lentils and onions...............YUMMY YUMMY
2) beef tendon-in pho-its a bit of a textural thing. Kind of like eating a harder version of beef flavored jello
3) ostrich- we bought some ground ostrich at our local co op once. Made a VERY tasty meatloaf with it
4) Foie Gras-LOVE-even thought I have somewhat of a moral objection to it
5) raw beef-I've never had carpaccio, but for some reason, I have always REALLY liked raw hamburger meat. Everyone I know thinks Im disgusting LOL
6) Frogs legs-tasted like a crab and a chicken had a baby
7) Escargots-YUMMY
8) Someone before mentioned ceviche? I LOOOOOVE ceviche. We have a Spanish/Mexican restaurant here in town that has a kick ass ceviche. Love it
9) And weirdly enough, I really prefer eating my fish raw a la sushi style. Fish just looses something for me when its cooked, unless its fish and chips LOL!

omg! lol I know tell me about it. Last night I went to Outback and ordered the Prime Rib dinner as a carry out, just because of this thread. Aynway, it was so good though. Of course it was "well done".:) They forgot to put my salad in the bag, but I didn't feel like driving back for it. It was too good to even think about the salad though.

As to the raw beef - I think it was my mom who told me that, when she was younger, her Italian grandmother would give the kids pieces of raw beef, I think dipped in vinegar. I don't know if this was an Italian thing, or just something done in the 50's/60's...

As to the eating fish raw - I understand to a point what you're saying. If I'm somewhere where I know the seafood is fresh (like Martha's Vineyard), I tend to like my fish with very little or no seasoning.

I had forgotten about ceviche - I've had it a couple of times before, and it was pretty good, although it wasn't something I'd go out of my way to order.

Our meat is pretty healthy and it's not too often that people get worms from eating rare meat, it's just that the possibilities are greater. Raw hamburger meat is unacceptable. Eat that, and yes you can get worms. I've seen people eat raw bacon too. Pork should ALWAYS be cooked well done.

I don't mean to spoil anyones appetite, but the worms I had mentioned before are ascarids which are found in cats and dogs, but it's just another species of Toxocara canis whos larvae can migrate in people. You also invite tapeworms and stomach worms if you continue to eat rare meat. Believe me, you'll know you've got them because depending on the parasite, you will have stomach inflamation which can result in vomiting, loss of appetite ect ect. I think you get the idea.

If you want to have these living inside of you, keep eating rare. Your intestines will make a great home for them...rent free.;)
