christiangirl,

Would you mind posting the link for the show? I've been trying to find it, but I haven't been able to.

Thanks

I saw the ep again on Youtube and I totally agree. I think that Hanna has a horrible habit of putting her foot in her mouth. She wasn't discriminating against anyone, but she didn't know how else to describe herself other than using phrases that were totally inappropriate. I felt almost bad for her as she just dug the hole deeper (and the other girls pulling the race card on her didn't help). "Are you prejudiced/racist?" What kind of answer did they expect to a question like that? "Um, of course I am, didn't you know?"

However, I did catch the part just afterward when Hannah said "This is like being gang raped" and that was NOT okay with me. She said it very quickly, but I can't believe she actually compared a snipe attack of some overly hype girls to something that extreme. I think she just needs to understand that certain comparisons and metaphors are not okay to use because of how others will perceive them, no matter how hard you are trying to get your point across. She won't learn that until she gets her butt kicked in only a way that life can.

I think you might have missed the point of her "gang rape" remark. She was essentially fed to the wolves. All the girls said was "lets all talk" and then they basically attacked Hannah by calling her racist. She had no clue what she was walking into. That being said, she compared it to being raped. The reality is, women who are raped (or gang raped) don't walk into the situation knowing that is going to happen. That's where her comparision came from. If she had known that they were going to attack her, she most likely wouldn't have walked into the situation, the same as a possible rape victim. Most people aren't "knowingly" going to put themselves in harms way.

That being said I felt Hannah handled the attack with a great amount of dignity. She was calm, she didn't cry in front of them. She said that she wasn't a racist, apologized that they felt she was and said that she was going to bed and walked away. I thought she showed a tremendous amount of class, especially since Joslyn and Brittney obviously have no class (impo).

I'm right there with you. She's from a SMALL town and had no idea what was going to happen to her and she did handle it well.

And she made a great point -- even when it was over for her, the other girls would NOT shut up about it. It was ridiculous.

No, I understood her point exactly and agree totally with your explanation. But when you think about it, her being blindsided and called names is piddly (at best) when compared to someone who was actually gang-raped. Even though it was horrible in that setting and I couldn't believe those girls went there, for Hannah to claim her experience was even comparable to that is just....I just think it was so hyperbolic that it was a little naive. But as it's a sensitive issue with me, I don't expect everyone to analyze it that deeply. Yes, Hanna did handle herself immensely well. I wouldn't have been that calm about it so I admire her for holding it together and not lowering herself to their standards because the girls seem to be extra snarky this cycle.

Fairbanks is not THAT small, its close to 40,000 people. my former roommate is from there, and the way she talks about it it's not so small-town feeling either.

what she said was idiotic, and offensive, but they could have handled it better and not ambushed her.

The whole area has close to 75,000 thousand or so, it is huge. The town proper may have about 40,000 but there are lots of people outside the limits who work and shop in town. I mean they have a giant Sam's Club and more than one Fred Meyer. It isn't like it is my town with 20,000 people, including students.

APhiAnna 09-13-2008 11:44 PM

Lauren Brie is GORGEOUS. I think Clark is the sexiest lil' thing ever on ANTM (haha and I'm straight and I'm still obsessed with her!). Love the girls so far on this season. My predictions? Clearly the winner will not be white/blonde or plus-sized (ANTM NEVER seems to pick winners back-to-back that have the same vibe...probably for diversity in the CoverGirl line-up). The winner will also not be Isis because CoverGirl wouldn't go for it, but she will make it far to make a political point. I think Sheena has a very strong chance because Tyra seems to love having "firsts" for ANTM and there has never been a particularly strong Asian model in the cycles (well, maybe April but that was what? Cycle 2?). The thing I love about ANTM is that it is so political now as opposed to simply being the "best model"...that and how outrageously campy it's become! It's almost like a parody of itself these days which I love.

APhiAnna 09-13-2008 11:47 PM

Oh, and whether or not Hannah is actually from a small town she is making a great strategic move by saying she is. Girls that have the "backstory" or weird twist on their personalities tend to go far or at least get a lot of attention. You'll see a lot on Hannah, Isis, Marjorie (homeschooled/France) and Sheena (because Asian contestants are rare on this show) for those reasons.

In the context of ALASKA it is huge, and also in the context of my small town in the Lower 48. The second largest city in the state, and it is pretty spread out. I grew up in a city with ten times the population of Fairbanks, in an area less than 50 square miles. The city limits don't include most residents, but there's a lot of political drama people will happily tell you about if you're dumb enough to lsiten.

I realize most people on GC have never been there, and never will, and the whole place just seems bizarre, and it is! After spending the summer 100 miles from Fairbanks, and going to a town with a population of 850 for resupplies, it is like going to Seattle or Chicago. It can be overwhelming and freaky. For all we know she could be from a homestead outside the city, and they said Fairbanks because it may actually be recognized on a map.

OK, I can see that within the context of Alaska. I was originally like  because the city I live in has about 350,000 and feels small :p

christiangirl 09-15-2008 09:10 PM

I guess I have trouble with the concept of 75,000 being a big city--the population of my hometown is just under a million, so I can't say that I relate to Hannah or the whole "small town" concept. ;) But, if she's from Alaska, then maybe...anyway, I do like her. She reminds me of a TV character, but I just can't put my finger on who...

Anyone else excited for makeover episode?? I hope it's better than the last couple. I don't think they've had a really GOOD makeover ep since Cycle 7 or so.

I live in a town of 20,000, and there are many many times I go to a bigger city and just feel overwhelmed. I never had a problem with crowds, noise, traffic, and people crammed in on top of each other until I didn't have to live that way anymore. Even now I have a house and a ayrd, and no neighbors above or on the sides (physically touching) and I still feel claustrophobic at times. Since I grew up in a huge city i didn't know any different, and i really like my smaller community but when we were looking around for a house to have a family in we looked in the smaller towns because even Moscow is too big at times.

The only thing I didn't like about being in the field last summer was not having transportation. If I had a vehicle I'd live at the site because it was just amazingly beautiful and there were NO PEOPLE. The issue of showers and laundry, plus food would have been easily solved by access to a vehicle. But yeah, a lot of it has to do with perspective, and if you're living out in Ester, Salcha, or Twin Rivers instead of Fairbanks proper, you are a small town girl.

ree-Xi 09-16-2008 10:50 AM

Today on a rerun of the Tyra show, Isis was featured as "a man living as a woman on the streets since s/he was 14". Isis prostituted her/himself and also had been convicted of felony robbery.

All gender issues aside, does anyone know if there are "personal character" stipulations to apply/appear on the show? What do you think about that? In any other situation, it would be pretty difficult, I imagine, for a former prostitute and a person with a felony to be considered high fashion model material.

33girl 09-16-2008 11:14 AM

Shandi was arrested for burglary, got 2 years probation and talked about it briefly on ANTM. So apparently an arrest record is not a dealbreaker.

This show isn't about "high fashion model material" and hasn't been since CG got involved. It's about the cult of Tyra, pushing whatever issues she decides to push that season (with contestants who fit the bill of course) and finding a model who fits whatever demographic Cover Girl wants to market to that year.

But it's fun to watch anyway. :)

Oh I didn't know that about Shandi. I agree with you on the CG agenda, but the show is billed as "top model". I guess the title is open to interpretation.

It IS a lot of fun to watch. I enjoy the photo shoots and the challenges. I could do without the elimination round, and Tyra's melodramatic "you are still in the running to be America's NEXT Top Model". My big sis and I love the show. We have a running joke about the show teaching life lessons. It's pure entertainment, and I love getting lost in it.

Really? I saw that episode when it first aired and I didn't even recognize Isis this time around. I don't know about personal character, but you have to be in "good physical and mental health" whatever that means. I think I saw something about having physical/psychological evaluations before you go on the show. I remember that from Cyle 5 because of how...."special" Lisa was. :D I remember her going on the Tyra Show and talking about how much she seemed to drink on the show and she said it was because of anxiety problems and how she was on meds for it. I didn't get why a) she was allowed to be on the show if the problems were that bad and b) why she would drink so much if she was on meds. I understand now that anxiety doesn't exactly equal a "mental problem" but I sure was perplexed about it then.

33girl 09-16-2008 01:44 PM

I think Lisa's only "anxiety problem" was being anxious to be on camera 100% of the time.

I still play this just for a laugh every now and again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcuF45SE8q4 :)

IDK, I remember one ep where she had a panic attack in the phone booth/room thingy and Bre rushed in to take care of her. I think she had some issues but she expressed them in the oddest ways...did anyone hear about her brief attempt at singing? I saw one vid and it was so awful people said it must've been a joke, but I see she had a couple songs so I don't know what to say.

Sadly, I think I would buy her album if it ever came out.

Holy cow I never knew that existed before now. Hilarious. Checked out her myspace music page too and it seems as though she has a song on this season of Entourage. Craziness.

When I found it a few months ago, I watched it over and over and over like it was some horrific accident I couldn't take my eyes off of. I had forgotten how bad it is! I'd be very  if this wasn't a joke. I'm PRAYING that this was a joke (more than anything, so that I won't feel so bad for laughing :o).

Fleur de Lis 09-17-2008 11:23 PM

Wow, this season has become incredibly Tyra-tastic. I mean, it's usually pretty bad, but she keeps dressing up in these crazy outfits and different personas. What was it this time, Fierce Witch of the South? Her voice was beyond annoying. And Mr. Jay as her "princess persona's" true love? Riiiight. I about fell over laughing with Miss Jay as the evil witch.

That said, I'm glad Brittany is gone. I didn't see much high fashion potential in her. I LOVE Samantha's new hair. Does anyone else foresee a nasty red weave on Elina like the one Brittany had on Cycle 8?

christiangirl 09-18-2008 02:33 AM

^^^Lol at "Tyra-tastic." I noticed that the new opening credits are very Tyra-centric. I don't mind b/c I love her but daaaang that was a lot of Tyra and very little of the models. That skit cracked me UP though. First of all, Miss Jay was too much. I thought I'd suffocate laughing! Then Tyra making out with the apple (and drooling all the while) was ridiculous. Mr. Jay kissing Tyra "his true love" made me giggle a fair amount, but watching him pick up and try to hold this horrendously long woman was what put me over the edge. :D

I think Elina will take MUCH better care of her weave than Brittany did, but I didn't like it at all. It had a certain "Bozo-Couture" going on when it was curly. But  at her saying "I hate my mother." I don't know the circumstances, but I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to say those kinda things to all of America. Oh and *blech* at Hanna's hair. I like it when she pins the bangs back, but that's all the points I can give her.

Glad Brit's gone too. She was less tham impressive to me and she gossiped way too much.

Samantha's new hair is awesome. She reminds me of a past model now, just can't think of her name.

And I love Elina's new hair. I know it's a weave and all but it looks great on her. She annoys me from time to time, but she's an amazing model. She just seems to know what she's doing better than the other girls.

Oh and I think the photog's comment on Isis about her face not being right for modeling will come up again...

Clark's hair looks like a giant bear pelt on her head. I don't think the color is flattering to her at all. But thank heaven they got rid of that awful bleach job on Marjorie's head.

Tyra-tastic is right. It's just getting ridiculous now. I mean she has a freaking talk show if she wants to act like an idiot. Methinks Paulina is probably gritting her teeth because she doesn't seem like she'd put up with too much of Tyra's MEMEMEMEMEMEME shite.

I was really excited to see Lisa Jackson featured last night. She was my favorite in Cycle 9 and I always wondered how she's doing.

Wasn't Sarah the one that was "too small" to be plus-sized but "too big" to be regular?

I think that would make her "average"?

Samantha's hair reminded me of Katie's in Cycle 2.

Does anyone else think Hannah's haircut makes her look like Dakota Fanning? lol

LOL I do see that also.

I have to agree with some of the previous posters that Tyra is slowly losing her mind. I mean, I'm all for "entertainment" but come on...The Wicked Witch of Fierce (or whatever she called it)? That's too much. She's focusing too much on herself rather than the models.

I though Brittney had a great look. Too bad she couldn't do anything with it. She looks good enough to get some commercial/catalog work though.

And  on Elina's hair. Maybe Tyra is seeing something we're not seeing, but I thought it looked a little...off. I'm sure with later shoots, it will look a little better.

Yup, that's her. You can't be average, absolutely not..."The fashion world is all about extremes, dahling..."

I thought the whole skit thing was just something funny for the girls, not really for the camera because Tyra had to know she'd look a dang fool. Lol at Analeigh...."Damn poison apple, now we have to wait till tomorrow." :p

APhiAnna 09-19-2008 09:32 PM

I am falling in love with Lauren Brie, she photographs so well!! Except I think they are giving her way too much praise early on for her to have an actual shot at winning...I bet she will be the girl that "had so much potential, but some of the judges feel like you may.....have.....plateaud". I loved Samantha's makeover, it made her look awesome. I'm having a hard time picking out who the "bitch" and the "shock value stupid" girl will be this cycle haha.

And hahaha at Lisa's video! It's horrible...wasn't she the chick who would get drunk off wine and and talk to plants? I remember loving her for the entertainment factor in that cycle.

I think if it were dark brown or black it would look awesome and be more "her." When it was styled for the photo, it looked great; but, when it was a giant curly poof, it looked ridiculous.

Fleur de Lis 10-02-2008 03:44 PM

I'm so tired of Marjorie. It's one thing to be a kind of negative person, but it's another to combine it with insecurity. ANNOYING!

My money is completely on Sheena, although she seemed a little absent this episode.

a.e.B.O.T. 10-02-2008 05:15 PM

She was kind of attacked, you can't really blame her... I am finding Sam rather annoying, her uneducated rhetoric and her need for middling is obnoxious...

pinkyphimu 10-04-2008 11:31 AM

I missed last week's episode, so what happened to Hannah? I saw that Isis was booted.
