*dusting off this thread*

Okay, I am mad that this thread fell all the way back to page three! LOL

Anyway, I have missed discussing music with you all...what has everyone been buying? Did anyone get any good CD's for Christmas?

My synopsis of recent music:

I am liking Stillmatic from Nas...although I am into more conscious hip hop, I appreciate Nas's lyrical ability (even though he rarely puts it to use anymore). My favorite track is called "One Mic"...a great song.

No Doubt "Rock Steady"... lots of reggae flavor. As I said in another thread, "Underneath it All" is ON TIME.

(For Ideal08), if you like My Sacrifice, you will like ALL the rest of Creed's songs, from any of their CD's. They all sound pretty much the same to me.

Lina "Stranger on Earth"- has been out for a while, but I just recently gave her CD a close listen. It is HOT. Her voice sounds kinda like a hybrid of Badu and Britney, if you can imagine that. The production is really solid throughout the CD. My favorite cut is called "I'm Not the Enemy." Her first single is pretty good too, though.

The Ali Soundtrack - BANGIN'. Not too much of a fan of the R. Kelly tracks, but Alicia Keys has a good one on there called "Fight" and it also includes "20 Dollars" from Angie and "Sometimes" from Bilal. Lots of oldies too... I ride to this CD all the time. "Ain't No Way" from Aretha gets put on blast immediately!

I think that's all for now (I know, that's enought, right!)...

Next up, later in January, Jaguar Wright....CHECK HER, y'all! For those of you that download, check out "Ain't Nobody Playin' " feat. Black Thought.

Oopsies, forgot to add...gotta give it up for the "new" Outkast (greatest hits, plus some new stuff like "The Whole World" :D ). It has my favorite song with my favorite verse ever on there - "Elevators"...
"I was in the mall the other day/ heard a call from the other way..."

This weekend, we bought (finally) Jill's new one, De La Soul's AOI:Bionic, and Dungeon Family. I haven't listened to De La Soul yet, but Jill and DF is off the chains.

My boyfriend is trying to talk me out of Creed's CD, because I'm not a Rock music fan, but My Sacrifice sounds more Alternative than Rock. I still want the CD, especially if it's all Christian-ish. I love that song, I do.

I like No Doubt's new song, too (Hey Baby). I doubt that'll be a purchase, though.

Right now, I don't have any CD's that I want to run out and buy. I do want to stack up on some old stuff, so I think I'll take a trip to the Record Exchange and see what I can dig up. I'm looking for Das Efx, BDP, Guru's Jazzmatazz 1 & 2, Sting, and that's all I can think of right now.

WHOA

Heard the new song by Tweet (Missy's newest find)...it's called "Oops...Oh my"

****Just as a sort of sidenote...what is really up with all the songs with "Oops" in the title?? Blu, Britney, now Tweet...it is gonna be the next "Butterflies," I tell ya! ("Butterfly(z,ies) was used in TOO many song titles in '01!!)****

Anyhoo, this song is OFF THE HOOK!!!!!!!!!!! I am telling y'all Missy/Timbaland, WHOEVER laid this track has really outdone themselves creatively.

As SOON as I heard it, I rushed home to download it (and wouldn't you know there isn't a "clean" copy yet...only DJ CLUE, CLUe, CLue, Clue, clue.... UGH!!! ... pirates like myself know what I mean ;) ). I also requested it on my local radio station, but they said they didn't have it on their playlist yet
Actually the DJ was like "Tweak"? I said, "NO, TWEET! You know from the Missy song, "Take Away?" I'ma need radio to keep their employees INFORMED, playlist or not!

Okay... I went and downloaded it. I liked the music and the beat so I wasn't really paying much attention to the lyrics until a few minutes ago. How come it took me a whole week to realize this whole song is about masturbation???

Dang, I've only heard the song once, and the beat was too tight. I can't wait to hear it again so I can listen to the lyrics.

Me and one of my coworkers were arguing whether it was about masturbation or her being with another woman. Either way, we can all agree that the production is hot! lol

Whoever thought we would be analyzing the LYRICS of a Missy/Timbaland track? lol

AKA2D '91 02-11-2002 05:41 PM

Mary J.

Mary was just on TRL and her CD "No More Drama" was re-packaged/ "re-released".

All I know is that NEW CD cover looks wayyyyyyyy better than the CD cover I have.

Does anyone know the songs that were re-mixed or added?

Every time I hear an R.Kelly song on the radio I change the station. He just disgusts me on so many levels.....

ANd it's hilarious sometimes, the dj's will be talking about how sick he is, etc., etc., and then five minutes later be playing his latest track! It kills me- even though I know they really don't have control over what gets played anymore.

Wonder if any backup singer moans, "Ooooooh, Daddy," since after all, R.'s teenage "conquest" on that tape calls him "Daddy."

Jaguar must be all that. She already has a Coke Commercial.

:D

gr8ful2AKA 02-13-2002 04:24 PM

I feel the same about R. Kelly...I can't listen to his music anymore. Just isn't the same! Brian McKnight's new CD is the WORST. What is going on?
Who is Jaguar? I'll have to pay attention to the Coke commercials. I need some new music in my life.:D

AKA2D '91 02-13-2002 04:32 PM

umm, GR8FUL2AKA,hopefully, if you are a Soror, you have introduced yourself in the Roll Call thread...

I remember seeing Jaguar singing back-up for Jigga on this MTV acoustic special.

The Coke commercial, is relatively new. :D

gr8ful2AKA 02-13-2002 04:45 PM

Thanks for showing me the light, Soror :)
I will introduce myself in the Roll Call thread. Got caught up with the excitement of GC and introduced myself in the "Why did you choose your screen name"...thread;)

it's not quite neo-soul. i would say she is a cross between kelis and maybe erykah badu. she kinda gets raw with the cursing (my sister gave me her copy because she doesn't like an r&b singer to curse) and she addresses mainly relationship issues. she's not jill scott but she does sound like a singing rapper. i don't know if i'm making any sense here...

Jaguar is the fire! I would say that she IS on the same level as Jill, but she keeps it gutter (not gulley, I don't even know what that means, lol). Whereas Jill's LYRICS portray her emotion (at least on studio tracks), Jaguar's VOICE is her emotion. Not that Jag's lyrics are weak by any means, they are just more to the point and less esoteric. Her CD has deep, thought-provoking songs like "Self Love" (9 minutes strong!), then she has those songs that make you say "TRUE!!!" like "What If?" (the song you hear a little bit on the commercial)

I LOVE this CD!

Okay, had to edit because I forgot to mention some new stuff...Musiq has a single out now. It is something with "Crazy" in the title, I can't remember exactly...release date is late March.

Y'all check for Cherokee...her song is called "I Swear." The video is hot (for AKA2d '91, lol), and so is the song. She isn't new, but I think this is the right time for her to blow up, with neo-soul takin' over and stuff. Shouldn't be long before her CD drops, I give it a couple more weeks.

Sigh... forgot again to add to watch for Glenn Lewis ("Don't You Forget It"). He is blowing up as we speak and his CD will drop soon too. I am catching him in concert on Saturday with Alicia Keys, so I will come back and let y'all know how the rest of his songs sound.

Janet Jackson was bigging him up on Dave Letterman last night. I LOVE the songs of his that I have downloaded off the net. Seems like a great talent, I can't judge his potenttial without seeing his look though- because people are shallow.

If he looks like Maxwell, he will blow up. If he looks like Bilal (who I LOVE by the way- can't understand why this man is not huge!)... he'll have a tougher time. Time will tell.

txdiva 02-15-2002 11:57 AM

I seen his video, I LOVE the song! I can't wait for the album to drop. I hear it will drop on March 19th.

MeezDiscreet 02-16-2002 09:50 PM

Let me add something...

...about jaguar wright. as i was listening to it for the umpteenth time, i realized who she reminds me of: N'DAMBI! are ya'll familiar with her? if not, please, go download, purchase, pirate, whatever your method. she is the b-o-m-b!

librasoul22 02-18-2002 09:30 AM

Okay y'all...Glenn Lewis is THE BOMB. His live show was pretty good, but he was only given 45 minutes. The 5 songs he did sing, I was lovin' 'em! They were also handing out little CD samplers after the show with snippets from his album, and it is sounding to me like a must-have. I read somewhere that he is getting comparisons to Stevie Wonder. Voice-wise, I can hear it.

On another note, if Alicia Keys is stopping near you, GO SEE THE SHOW! Even if you thought her CD was just mediocre, her live show will blow you away. I don't want to give anything away in case people reading are still gonna go see it, but it was one of the best shows I have ever seen (and that includes Alicia/Maxwell earlier this year).

MeezDiscreet, right on about N'Dambi.

UNWRAPPED

Hidden Beach Recordings Presents: Unwrapped, Vol. 1
Various Artists

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0...1.MZZZZZZZ.jpg

This was released September 25, 2001 but I never heard about it until last night when an acquaintance of mine mentioned it.

TRACK INFO:
1. Crush On You
2. Ms. Jackson
3. Loungin' (Who Do You Love)
4. The Light
5. One More Chance
6. So Fresh So Clean
7. I Get Around
8. Forgto About Dre
9. What's It Gonna Be
10. Bonita Applebum
11. You Got Me
12. Danger (Been So Long)
13. Stan

Amazon Reviewer's Comments: These are not your put-you-to-sleep cool jazz rip-offs of popular R&B songs! Definitely a step up in my book of the music I can relate to. If you like the sounds of Boney James and sometimes just want to bop your head to some Tupac, you've just found your CD. These won't be played on the radio -- it's too contemporary for the average jazz station, yet too laid back for a rap format. I like my jazz fusion funky, so I just found my "put the top back" CD for my car this summer.

This is actually a pretty good CD...it is from Jill Scott's label and some of the artists that are on the CD are debuting on Hidden Beach.

Why I asked, I don't even know, because this is my first time coming to GC since then, lol. Anyway, I bought it on Friday, cuz I couldn't wait to see what you said, lol!! I LOVE IT!!!!!! LOVE IT!!! Track 11 is my fave. Tracks 6 and 7 are running a close second. Girl, I love that CD!! But she does get kinda raw w/ the cussin'.

Librasoul (girl, I miss our chats!! As soon as I get access at home again in a few days, we can catch up!!!), we're gonna buy Glenn Lewis this weekend, I hope, since it's Triple point weekend, lol. Is he gonna be out this weekend? We heard him on one of the "other" stations this weekend, and was like, dang, if he mainstream already, it's prolly gon' be tight!!!

Haven't heard N'Dambi yet. MeezD, pirate??? LMAO!!! Is Lina's CD out, how is it? Has anyone heard Dawn Robinison's? I saw it when I bought Jag's, but I'm hesitant on her, I'll wait to see what yall say, lol. What about Res? Does she have a CD out?

Yeah, new job, I'm back to my old CD buying habits, but so! :D

Is track 11 "Self Love"? Because that is my favorite song! Glenn Lewis won't be out until 3/19, but Jag was 2000 bonus points. Glenn CD's is gonna be a must have. I have a promo of it (plus I heard him perform a few songs live) and it is just a great album. Lina's CD is tight to me, I am digging the big band/hip hop/soul fusion. I like Faith's new CD too, my favorite track on there is number 12 "Brand New Man"... Dawn's CD? Haven't heard it, but not really feeling the lead single. I think it is called "Envious" or something. Res does have a CD out it's called "How I Do". Next artist I am looking forward to is Cherokee (she has been out since like '98, but maybe she will get some recognition now), her CD will be out next month. Musiq is still scheduled to drop late March/early April, his new song is cool. Man, what else, lol...I am trying to have a stream of conciousness before I forget anything... oh well, if I remember something I will be back.

Ideal08, I have been MIA too, but it's good to touch base again! We do have a lot of music stuff to catch up on!!

EUR's Discussion about TWEET

From today's EUR:
STREETWATCH
I Looked Over To The Left ...

I looked over to the left...

…and tried to figure out why everyone is making such a fuss over
the song "Oops (Oh My) from newcomer Tweet. So the girl came
home at a quarter to three and wanted to "handle her business"
by herself instead of making a booty call. Since when is that
a crime? Well, maybe in some Bible belt states…

I looked over to the left…

…and thought, Tweet is the new millennium Joycelyn Elders the
former Surgeon General who was roundly criticized by the right
wing, called a freak and was ultimately fired by a reluctant
President Clinton for just suggesting that students be
taught about "Oops (Oh My)" as a form of safe sex.

I looked over to the left…

…and wondered why radio personalities (male and female alike)
call this song "nasty" or use their "controversial voice" to introduce it? Is it because the girl is by herself, or is there some kind of hidden message we're just missing? We decided to just ask Tweet and settle it once and for all. This is what she said, "The song means self-love and appreciation to me, because I had a problem with my skin color and different things about myself. I decided to write a song that said you can touch yourself, but it doesn't mean sexually. I'm saying stroke your ego, pat your personality. Just love yourself regardless. Even the negative spin radio puts on it doesn't matter because I always tell people who listen to my music to make it theirs. So if people want to be out there and say it's something else for them, let it be that."

Respond to StreetWatch via: EURfeedback@eurweb.com

librasoul22 02-27-2002 11:48 AM

I heard some of Tweet's CD...it is sounding pretty good (beats by Tim and Missy, so it's gotta be hot, right?) It drops on 4/2. The video kinda sucks, although I am not sure how they could do a subtle video for the song's theme. It looks to me like they are trying to market her as the new Aaliyah, which would be a big mistake. I think she has enough talent to stand on her own (she writes her own stuff and plays some instruments, too).

Cherokee drops on 3/19, her CD is OFF THE HOOK y'all. It has appearances by some Philly folk including Jill Scott.

I read an interesting article about Jag, it said that she has rheumatoid arthritis in almost every major limb in her body and severe scoliosis (sp.?). I would never have guessed!!

P.S. Ideal08, I love "I'm Not the Enemy" from Lina...I put that on a CD and people who heard it asked about that song before anything else (it was a sorta neo-soul compilation).
