I just really wish I knew that the 80's were going to be the best times of my life (so far anyway) with the least amount of responsibility and the most fun. Things seemed stressful at the time, but in retrospect, it was a piece of cake compared to the last 18 years.

I know exactly what you mean.

Me too. Especially "Head over Heels".

AGDee 02-09-2008 02:26 PM

Better than Addicted to Love was Weird Al's version.. Addicted to Spuds

I loved the GoGos and Paula Abdul, for that matter. Oh, and Laura Brannigan.

ETA: I have a Lady's Legends of the 80's CD that I LOVE! I'm not sure that is the exact name of it, I'll have to check, but it has Let's Hear it For the Boy, 99 Luft Balloons, and many other great ladies songs from the 80's.

Being a guy, "Vacation" is a guilty pleasure. :)

I loved Nena singing both the German and English versions of 99 Luft Balloons. But what bugs me is that XM Radio's 80s station always plays this mixed version that bounces between the languages.

Is it totally wrong that I secretly want to buy the 25th anniversary edition CD/DVD of Micheal Jackson's greatest hits?

I just want to pop that music in my car and rock out (disco out??) on the freeway...and lose myself in a time that was so much simpler...when Michael was just kinda odd and not a total creepo...

No, no, no! Nothing wrong with old Michael! :D

I want to get it too, but I'm nervous about some of the collaborators they chose (ex. MJ and Fergie - Beat It 2008 -:mad:)

I was at the gym today and I could overhear one of my favorite Blondie songs coming from the Spinning Studio (Dreaming). Well, I broke out into song and nearly embarrassed myself:

I don't want to live on charity
Pleasure's real or is it fantasy?
Reel to reel is living rarity
People stop and stare at me We just walk on by - we just keep on dreaming
Feet feet, walking a two mile
Meet meet, meet me at the turnstile
I never met him, I'll never forget him

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95AEzyWZX8I
God, I loved her music!

I was singing along to Mariah at the gym last night. I was doing some cool down laps around the track and I think there were about five patrons (inlcuding the two of us) and five employees. I was getting my jam on to "Love Takes Time" and got caught by the desk girl. I wasn't ashamed because I was rocking out to Cyndi Lauper less than five minutes before.

Oh, but Fratty says, "I never pop the collar". Is that a Polo I spot?

catiebug 02-19-2008 07:59 PM

Hmmmmmmmm.....

Looks like a mock-neck to me, or maybe a t-shirt riding high.

Well, I do agree that "This Kid" and Fratty are about the same size

I LOVE that song! Gotta go get it now.

I don't know why I've been avoiding this thread. I'm completely addicted to the 80s. When I first got iTunes I thought I'd make a little playlist of my favorite 80s songs. Figured it might have 20 songs. Wrong! It turned into a 9 volume CD set and I'm still adding more that I've forgotten.

Embarrassed to ask this but does anyone remember a commercial from the 80s that kind of turned into a bit of a slogan, "Don't take the car! You'll kill yourseeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllfffffffffff!" ? Maybe it was a regional thing? :o

sageofages 02-20-2008 01:03 AM

How come no one has mentioned

Jane Fonda's work out tapes????

hmm....so much of the 80's were a bit blur...

I started out the decade "clubbing" ;) at the Dixie (for any of you from Dayton) and ended it "Married with Children" by giving birth to child #3. Wow!

Mall Bangs
Shoulder Pads
Stilleto heels with tight ankle jeans
Big Belts with off the shoulder Shirts
BIG earrings!!!!
matching socks and shirts!
Strawberry shortcake and Rainbow Brite (my oldest daughter's favorite!)

so much to remember....

hoover815 02-20-2008 02:29 AM

Ah ... 80s! (sings, warbly) "Now I've ... had ... the time of my liiiiife ..." (Dirty Dancing).

The 80s still have some of the best music around -- The Go Gos, Michael Jackson (before he got freakish), Pat Benatar, Heart, Duran Duran, Culture Club, ... I'm getting all misty eyed just thinking about it!

Fashion, however, was one big Glamour Don't -- shoulder pads? acid wash? BIG hair? flash dance? PARACHUTE PANTS? Ugh!

Did anyone else make those beaded safety pin things that you traded with friends and wore on your shoe laces (preferably your white Nikes with the red swoosh)?

catiebug 02-20-2008 10:14 AM

Cool! I'll be in Dayton in May!

Sounds like me. I was a college coed at the start of the 80's, and by the end, I had two kids and another on the way!

Where I lived, fashion meant: PREPPY!

Laura Ashley floral dresses that looked like tents (they made great maternity dresses after college)

Mexican dresses (ditto the tent look)

Skirts or walking shorts (denim or otherwise) with button down shirts and cumberbunds,

And flat pumps and hose (yuck!).

We even wore this type thing to class every day - with lots of makeup and big hair.

I had one of those! I thought it was the best thing evah. An elastic neckline, poofy sleeves, a scalloped hemline, and three, big, bright-ass pink flowers going right down the center.

catiebug 02-20-2008 03:56 PM

I had a rainbow of those dresses!!!

I had one of those Mexican dresses too! It was bright blue with heinous pink and yellow flowers all down the center. My mom brought it home from a trip to Mexico but I never wore it...I loaned it to my friend to wear who wanted to wear it for an "Alpha Phi-esta" theme day for her chapter's rush, and she never gave it back. My mom is still asking me where that dumb dress is!!!

Benzgirl 02-20-2008 06:38 PM

What concerts did you see in the 80s?

I saw Steve Winwood, Thompson Twins, Berlin, The Kinks, The Clash, Rush. I'm sure there were more.

Chicago, The Bangles, Mister Mister, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, ... U2 on their Joshua Tree tour, which still ranks in the top 10 of concerts ever.
