I'm curious about KD, AOII and others that don't name their chapters in order. Is there a logic to it?

I know AOIIs are allowed to pick their chapter designation, along with some other groups.

ETA: Also, some groups like DPhiE, do it in this order:

Alpha, Beta, Gamma .. Omega

Delta Alpha, Delta Beta ..
Phi Alpha, Phi Beta ..
Epsilon Alpha, Epsilon Beta ..

and back to Alpha Alpha, etc.

That's interesting.

I.C. a Pi Phi 05-06-2009 11:59 PM

Pi Phi is different, naming their chapters with a state designation. As you may or may not know, from 1867-1889 Pi Phi was called I.C. Sororsis. Here's a list of IC chapters before the switch to Pi Beta Phi. I highlighted the ones I *think* are still active.

And the associate clubs were for non-college women. I beleive they were founded to compete with PEO for members in the mid-west.

Alpha Monmouth College
Beta
Gamma Iowa Wesleyan
Delta Mt. Pleasant Female Seminary, IA
Epsilon Indiana Ashbury
Zeta Baptists Young Ladies Seminary, Indianapolis
Eta State Institute, Bloomington, IN
Theta
Iota Lombard College, Galesburg (now known as Knox College)
Kappa Kansas Univerisity
Lambda Simpson College
Mu Iowa State
Nu Clarinda (associate)
Xi Normal School, Bloomfield Iowa
Omicron Burlington, Iowa (associate)
Pi
Rho Dearborn Seminary, Chicago
Sigma Pella College, Iowa
Tau
Upsilon Knox College
Phi Jacksonville Female Academy, Illinois
Chi State University of Iowa
Psi Wesleyan College, Cincinnati
Omega Des Moines, IA (alumnae)
Beta Omega Fairfield, Iowa (associate)
Zeta Omega Ottumwa Iowa (associate)
Delta Omega Iowa City, Iowa (alumnae)
Gamma Omega Mt. Pleasant, Iowa (associate)
Sigma Cedar Rapids, Iowa (associate)
Nu University of Colorado
Univerisity of Denver
Callanan College, Des Moines
Hillsdale College, Michigan
Hastings College, Nebraska
Franklin College, Indiana
University of Michigan
George Washington Univeristy

AOII chapters are named by the colonizing sisters of that chapter and they usually hold a special meaning for those sisters. I love it!

Our chapter's names are also our sub-mottos. I think we are the only sorority to have sub-mottos for each chapter. For example, Theta Beta stands for "True Bonds of Sisterhood", Lambda Tau stands for "Loyalty Together" and Lambda Epsilon stands for "Live elegantly, laugh easily, love eternally."

Psi Upsilon is the same way. The individual chapters select their own designation, usually based on a chapter motto, though I do know some chapters that chose the letters for some other reason and make up a motto to fit them.
