Luckily for everyone who doesn't go to Longwood, it's the only school where sororities wear jumpers. Thanks for the comment on my chapter... but all of them have nice members! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Probably the nicest are Tri Sigma, AST, and DZ.

KillarneyRose, a jumper is a dress that ummm... kinda looks like a maternity dress. I hate them, but they are tradition here.

SSS1365, I used to have to wear jumpers when I attended private school from K-8 (part of the uniform). But I thought they were cute...perhaps that they are different kinds of jumpers? I don't know...these were the sheath-kind-of-dresses that were above the knee (of course, we girls always got the shorter ones http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif, or tried to hem them up http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif).

Well the jumper styles change over the years, but right now they're long and I feel like a pregnant grape when I wear mine, cuz it's too big for me. Each sorority has jumpers in their own colors... except Alpha Gam, theirs are plaid and in my opinion the ONLY cute ones!

If anyone is curious as to what these things look like, you can go to http://www.angelfire.com/va2/alphasigmas/present.html and scroll down to the bottom.

SSS1365, yes, my jumper looked a lot different! It was, as I said, above the knee, and mine was plaid--dark blue and yellow. It was actually pretty nice! Compared to other private school uniforms, my friends and I felt very lucky...b/c there were some schools that had the ugliest of colors on their jumpers!!

Mon Dieu!!! How could I have forgotten one of Canada's most distinctive accents - Quebecois. Lil G, I'll agree with you, the Newfies also have an accent all their own.

KillarneyRose 06-23-2001 01:10 AM

Hi Longwood ladies! I am sorry to bring up the jumper thing again but I was just wondering when you wear them? Is it everyday to class and all? Or just for sorority functions? Do all female students wear them or just sorority women?

First off, people everywhere have accents. Secondly, Californinas do use slang. I remember when I was in high school I went on the Close-Up Trip to Washington, DC, and there were people there from Minnesota, Wyoming, Rhode Island, South Carolina, etc. Everyone sounded different from each other. I remember making a list for my "new friends" of slang we use in Cali--such as crib, the spizzot (spot), fo-shee-zee (for sure)(that some ghetto E-40 slang for ya http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif), etc. We also, use the woord "like" alot, unfortunately.

I think in our society we judge how people talk on tv to be the norm, like news people, and actors. In that case I think people from the midatlantic and the west coast have the least amount of an accent.

texas*princess 08-12-2002 01:38 AM

Hmm that's an interesting question... I used to have a friend in conneticut that had a huge twang! he was born/raised in ct. too.. but i can't say i have heard a whole lot of people from that area to make a logical guesstimate :p

Some people say i have a teeny Texas "twang" but I swear I don't hear it

FiReKraCkEr 08-12-2002 04:55 AM

When I was little, I had a slight Korean accent because it's my first language.

Now, I have lived in TN for 11 years!! So, I catch myself talking with a Southern accent. When I was in D.C, this guy was like..."Are you from TN, or something cause you sound like it" But, when I speak formally (like infront of an audience) I don't have one at all. And when I'm with my friends, it slips out!

Re: Accents?

I'm originially from Michigan and I've been to California a couple times and I can definitely say that we talk differently.

My husband was born in Indiana and grew up in Kansas and Ohio and we have slightly different accents. Most of the time you can't tell but the the way he says certain words or uses certain phrases shows that we grew up in different areas.

Most of my older family members are from Alabama, Arkansas, and Missouri and when I spend enough time with them I notice that I start talking a little differently.

ZTAMiami 08-14-2002 10:30 AM

I lost my Jersey accent a few years ago but whenever I go back for a visit I say dawg, cawfee, mawl..etc. I also have a spanish accent (1st language) but thats ok 'cause I live in Miami now.

Longwood ladies, please do tell more about the jumpers!

KappaKittyCat 08-14-2002 05:13 PM

I was born in southwestern Illinois, pretty close to Missouri (pronounced "miz-ZERR-uh"), and moved to Wisconsin when I was six. I was made fun of my first month at school for my Southern accent, which I grew out of. However, when I go back down to visit family, I'm usually well returned to my accent before I cross the Illinois River. It also sneaks out when I'm tired, upset, or drunk.

I also have a powerful gift for mimicry, so I pick up on others' accents, be they southern, New England, British, Aussie, or whatever, within 10 minutes of conversation. People think I'm mocking them!

One that nobody's mentioned but is rather common 'round here is the Uper (pronounced "YOU-per") accent. Y'know Bobby's Mom on the cartoon show Bobby's World? Or the sheriff in Fargo? Kinda like that. It's basicly anybody who lives 'round Lake Superior, but it trickles down as far as Green Bay in WI and the Twin Cities in MN. It's funny.

Us Folks in Missouri and Kansas have NO ACCENTS! We Talk Normal it is yall who are from N/S/E/W who have accents!

Hell there are no Native Calif they all very well come from the Heartland of Mo/Ks!

You up North have to tawlk fast as it is Colder than a Well Diggers Butt!

You down South have Heat so you slow your stuff down, well except in N O where you eat OYSTERS and Drink Demon Rum!

You do not just understand!

I hope this helps with all of you people:cool:

SATX*APhi 08-14-2002 06:20 PM

Originally from Texas, I do not have a "Texan" accent that everyone thinks that all Texans have and I don't know anybody that does have a "Texan" accent.

I do have a friend from Ohio who I firmly believe has an accent. She denies it, but did tell me that there is a Northern Ohio accent and a Southern Ohio accent. I do not know which she has b/c I am not from that area.

I think everyone has some sort of accent, it just isn't very noticable. There is no "one accent" that is the norm, or is there? I think you notice the accents that are most unlike the one you have or are accustomed to hearing. :)

Excelsior301 08-15-2002 01:45 AM

I never thought I had an accent until I left my lifelong home of Pennsylvania and went to school in Ohio. Everyone at school claims I have some kind of accent and I pronounce certain words funny. Maybe it's just that I talk properly and they talk weird. I mean, hey, Pennsylvania is the birth place of our nation (Philadelphia, Declaration of Independence, blah, blah, blah) everyone should talk like us!:)

You tell them Tom! Add those from Nebraska to the list too! Why else is Omaha the telemarketing capital of the world?:p I guess some of Missouri does have an accent, St. Louis people do the long A thing. But they're really almost Illinois, so it's alright.;) And my friend from Bolivar (right next to Springfield) has what I call a little bit of a smooth accent. Not southern, but smooth.:)

Two times in my life I was told I have an accent. Once was a friend from suburban St.Louis that said I have a hick accent (what the hell that is I don't know...). And once a chick from MinnEsOta said I talk fast and slur my words togeter. Yeah, compared to her I do!

Socrates Soul 09-01-2002 12:25 AM

Accents are beautiful distinctual tones and the best thing about a broad Aussie accent is our uncanny ability to imitate numerous other accents brilliantly.......:D

It's true! Us northern ohioans say our "a's" a little longer..like accent (ahhhk-cent). I got made fun of so bad when I went to school down South..Everyone was like, wait a second, say that again! Then when I came home, everyone told me I had a southern accent!

Wait, Tom, do you think Iowans have accent? We don't talk like Minnes-oo-tans ...

Starlet 09-01-2002 02:22 AM

I don't have a New "Joisey" accent, though people have told me that I do have a slight one. When I went on Spring Break two years ago, my friends and I met these guys from Boston who had the most adorable accents. I got a kick out of pretty much every word that came out of their mouths because of the way they sounded. So now I think Boston accents are extremely cute and sexy!

PM_Mama00 09-01-2002 11:50 AM

I live in Southeastern Michigan (Downriver). Some of my friends and family friends live like an hour north of us (we call them east-siders), and they definately talk different than us.

I think Ohio people have an accent too. When I go to Brooklyn and Staten Island, I come home with a slight accent. When I was little, those were my 2nd home, so it was even worse then!

Tom Earp 09-01-2002 12:05 PM

OKAY!!!!

The 4 State Area: Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, and Nebraska DO NOT have axzents!:)

Use to go North and wanted to hear me talk Southern!

Then Go South and wanted to hear me talk Northern!

Many states have their own lingo: NY, NJ, RI, Mass, Tx, Ark! No lingo in Cal. as all from everywhere else!

N has an Asian Southern accent and love talking to her!

T has No accent being from Upstate NY and gone to MI U!

Hell we mid life people talk normal, just type bad!:D (ME)! K ?

Go to Europa and see what it is all abut! Oops Scotland!

Try Cockney, hell asked for a drink and said a say wat?!:D

Kevin 09-01-2002 01:37 PM

There is no "ideal" accent. There is also no "correct" way to speak american english. Every region seems to have characteristic ways of speaking... they have their own vocabulary, etc.

I vary between basically eliminating any accent to having a typical okie accent depending upon who I'm speaking to.

Also due to the prevalance of TV, accents are typically not nearly as extreme as they used to be.

I used to jokingly tease my Baltimore native friends about the way the say "hooome" and phooone." My friends say that my New Jersey/New York accent comes out randomly. I personally love when guys have New York and Boston accents!

texas*princess 09-01-2002 10:01 PM

Maybe this has something to do with accents...?

Just wondering.. I went to visit Missouri earlier in the summer, and honestly felt like a dork because I was the only one there (or so it seemed) that pronounced the name "Missouri" like Mis-sour-i, with an E sound at the end. I was taught that was how to say it?

However, when I actually went to go visit the lovely state, everyone else seemed to pronouce it Mis-sour-a with an A sound in the end

Is that a Missourian thing?

KappaKittyCat 09-01-2002 10:29 PM

Yes, hon, that's a Missouri thing. Like I posted above, I still say Mi-zerr-uh, but it's almost an ih sound, like in "fish." The best description would be the neutral vowel in French. But that's getting a little technical. Best figure is that it's their secret code to tell who's from Missour-ah and who's just visiting.

XOMichelle 09-02-2002 12:19 AM

I'm from Sounthern Wisconsin, and We have accents! Little ones. I spend a lot of time in northern CA and I've always thought they round out their o's, almost in an English way.

Peaches-n-Cream 09-02-2002 12:29 AM

People think that I am from the Midwest because I don't sound like Amy Fisher or Joey Buttafuoco or Linda Richman. Talk among yourselves. I'll give you a topic... :p

APhiRattlerGal 09-02-2002 01:22 PM

I dont have too bad of a Texas accent. In fact I barely have one at all. But sometimes I catch myself overusing "ya'll" that my cousins from other states like to make fun of me for. I've heard people like the good ole' Texas accent at least i know the guys do.

EagleChick19 09-02-2002 02:06 PM

I don't have an accent, but I wish I did, though.
